SpeakGoa demands judicial inquiry into Sunburn Scam allegations

Rs 5 cr of bribes, kickbacks and free passes caused a revenue loss of approximately Rs 13 crore to the State of Goa

Thursday 28th February 2013, Panjim; Goa: SpeakGoa has demanded a judicial inquiry into allegations of corruption and tax evasion during Sunburn 2012 held in North Goa in the last week of December 2012. The Manohar Parrikar-led government in Goa has overlooked and turned a blind-eye to the allegations of bribery and tax evasion totally over Rs 15 crore. As per our figures, about Rs 5 core were distributed as bribes, kickbacks and other freebees and given out as largesse to various government and police officials, including MLAs and others in positions of power to enable the event to go on “smoothly”and to ensure that the organizers were not pulled up on any minor or major counts at the last moment or while the event was in progress.

In addition to the above Rs 5 crore paid under-the-table a tax evasion of about Rs 13 crore is quite likely given the numbers present at the venue on the three days of the event.

The Managing Director of Percept Mr Harinder Singh – organizers of Sunburn, has gone on record in writing stating that the maximum numbers of free passes were given out and the increase in the number of free passes was over 200 per cent this year (2012). In our opinion, free passes which were given to the Tourism Department for distribution to celebrities and other prominent citizens of Goa were sold in black and even at lower rates than the official rates on the last day in full view of entertainment tax and corporate tax officials. The Commissionerate of Commercial Taxes (CCT) deployed only 8-10 inspectors when there should have been at least 300 inspectors to catch touts red-handed given that there was a crowd of over 5 lakh persons in the vicinity of the event and in the Candolim area on the last day of the event. Eyewitnesses say that there were about 80 to 100 touts selling passes in black quite openly. The government very well knows that there is a huge black marketing of passes during such events, very often by the organizers themselves. In spite of this, the government failed to take adequate steps to control and halt black-marketing of tickets.

We have reason to believe that Rs 90 lakh to Rs 110 lakh worth of tickets were sold in the “free or complimentary category” on the last day alone, and were sold unofficially in black outside the event venue. No entertainment tax was paid on these tickets and the state lost valuable revenue causing a loss of about Rs 13 crore to the State Exchequer

Boman Irani to play Ram Jethmalani in Jolly LLB!

Versatile actor, Boman Irani is now ready to don the mantle of a super successful lawyer in his upcoming next, Fox Star Studios’ JOLLY LLB. Interestingly, Boman feels the character resembles veteran lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP, Ram Jethmalani. Boman adds, “The film is about an incident in which a rich man’s son is involved. My character is somewhat like Ram Jethmalani, the best lawyer India has. It’s quite an intense role.”

Directed by Subhash Kapoor, who also gave us, Phas Gaye Re Obama, Jolly LLB is a take on the judicial system of our country and how a Meerut based lawyer, with the dream of making it big, reopens a case that pits him against Boman Irani. Calling the film, a slice of life experience, Boman feels that while the film deals with an important issue, it’s comic satire will draw the audiences to the theatres.

As for the reason for doing the film, Boman adds,“I get excited by a good story and the director. Even though I don’t play the main role in the film, I was drawn to it when director Subhash Kapoor offered it to me. I liked the way he wanted to treat the film.”

Political leaders suggest to hold The Attacks of 26/11 screening in Parliament

“Brilliant,” BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani was heard saying again and again aloud at the screening of the Ram Gopal Varma film The Attacks of 26/11 at the Films Division Auditorium at Mahadev Road, new Delhi.
Advani was present there along with various other leaders who cut across party lines to view the film. From Shah Nawaz Hussain to Sanjay Nirupam, from Naveen Jindal to Balbir Punj, from Rak Babbar to Ram Vilas Paswan, they were all there.
The horde of politicians were stunned by the imagery of the film as they watched the unfolding of the most audacious attack on Indian soil post independence.
The film’s director Ram Gopal Varma humbly stood and heard reactions and praises for his work as sources inform that member of parliament Rajeev Pratap Rudy insisted in front of LK Advani for a “special screening” to be done of the film in Parliament for all the Indian MPs to view.
When contacted, Ram Gopal Varma confirmed that he had indeed got a overwhelming response from the people who saw the film. “Advaniji said that the film was brilliant,” is what Ram Gopal Varma said and he also confirmed about Mr.Rudys proposal to show the film to all the MPs in the Parliament.

T-Series has locked another vital music deal for Salman Khan’s upcoming two films. It has acquired the music rights of ‘Kick’, a Sajid Nadiadwala film, and ‘Mental’ by Sohail Khan.

Bhushan Kumar says, “We have got the music rights of Salmanbhai’s home production Mental and Sajid Nadiadwala’s next Kick. Right from Tere Naam, we have believed in getting all the music rights of his projects. He tells me he is expecting an X amount and then leaves it to us. A lunch to thrill

Actor Meera, Aryaman and director Ajay Yadav had a gala time on the sets of Ajay Yadav’s Ghubar, where they enjoyed a sumptuous lunch spread during the break. Considering that the scenes shot during the day were high voltage emotional scenes, these moments were like a breath of fresh air or the cast.

Talking of Ghubaar, women-oriented scripts are the need of the hour and Serene Films’ Ghubaar is one such film.
