Uncle’s Kitchen completes Yummy 25years!

‘Uncle’s Kitchen’, a landmark restaurant at Malad is ‘home away from home’ for many suburban Mumbaikars to dine with their near and dear ones and at the same time relish the delight of a unique hospitality. The restaurant has been serving mouth-watery and hygienic food to people including college students, professionals and celebrities. It has established itself as a name synonymous with delicious cuisines. On the special occasion of completing a 25 year-successful journey, Sanskriti Media’s Sr. Editor Devyani P. Korgaonkar spoke to Ronnie D’souza, the owner to share his wonderful experiences.

You have completed a successful journey of 25 long years and moving on. So, first of all, share your feelings with us.

It has been an unbelievable and amazing experience that words can’t describe. The restaurant started on 8th January, 1987. Now, we are at 2012. We went through so many changes, 25 years is indeed a very long journey.

Why ‘Malad’ was the place to establish a ‘Chinese’ restaurant at that point of time?

We always had a property there at Orlem in Malad. And my father was very good at cooking. He always wanted to start something of his own. There was a gentleman named Gregory D’Souza, who was my dad’s very good friend. He was ready to support my father financially. Gregory was mostly known here to people as ‘Uncle’. Both of them decided to run the restaurant. By the time, my dad had received a job offer from Dubai. He thought he will come back after few years and start the restaurant. But, unfortunately, after six months Gregory had passed away and my dad immediately returned to Mumbai. He then started ‘Uncle’s Kitchen’ in Gregory’s memory. And then onwards, it’s been his bleesing and our hardwork over here.

What has been the ‘success formula’?

Well, our success formula has been “to remain honest with your food; good quality, good service and to serve your food with love.” It is very important to serve your food with love. We make our guests to feel at home. And we are very consistent with our food quality.

Let us know about your ‘Home Delivery’ system.

We started ‘home delivery’ in 1987, the very first year we founded our restaurant. It was a very new kind of idea. No one knew what ‘home delivery’ is all about, people at that point of time used to be surprised after knowing about the system. That time, not many people had telephone connection. Only few used to place orders on telephone. I remember, my father used to send me for the parcel delivery on bicycle. My elder brother was in the kitchen. We, four members of the family worked together very hard in different departments.

Don’t you have any expansion plan in mind?

We may think in the near future. But at the moment, we don’t have any such plan. We give personal attentions to our guests. Youngsters, who used to visit the place as kids today drop by with their girlfriends or wives and even children. So, we are serving generations for two decades and we happily want to put our attention at one place. The restaurant was earlier a 20-seater and now it is a 150-seater in the AC and non-AC sections.

Who are the people running it now?

My dad is there but he has taken a backseat now. My uncle Peter D’souza, my elder brother Sunny Dsouza, and I myself are running the restaurant. This restaurant is more like a home for us.

How are your cuisines different from other Chinese restaurants?

Well ofcourse, we have to be different, otherwise we can’t survive for so long. Our quality is altogether different. For example, we are the one who introduced Chicken Lollypop. Our Fried Chicken Chilly is also without batter, without coating; we have Schezwan varieties. Now, during the celebrations, we have introduced low-calorie pastas.

We heard that you have some famous Bollywood stars as your patrons!

Well, our restaurant is strategically located. Several renowned stars, while shooting in the Madh Island drop in on their way back from their shoots or they order parcels from here. We have Raza Murad, Anupam Kher, Ajay Devgn, Suresh Oberoi and many others as our regular guests.

And the Scorpion Stings…

One of the most consistent performers of Colors’ Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa,
Jayati Bhatia has brought different styles to the stage every single
time. Keeping up with the trend, for this week’s Rashi episode, Jayati
will be seen performing for Vrushik Rashi or Scorpio. Taking their
theme literally, this duo will be seen performing to Bichuaa while
displaying the Odissi style. A maestro in Odissi, Jayati has learnt
the style for 17 years and it is sure to help her in her performance
this week. “I haven’t danced this style in the longest time but I have
to perform well since my guru will be watching this act,” she said.
Dressed in the authentic Odissi attire, ghungru in her feet, alta on
her hands and a head piece, she looked like she was all set to rock
the stage.

Going Back in Time

“As a child, Eklavya and Dronacharya’s story used to be an all time
favorite with me” says Pratyusha Bannerjee, who will be seen depicting
their story through dance in this week’s episode of Colors’ Jhalak
Dikhhla Jaa. A Rashi special, all the contestants this week will be
seen performing to one zodiac sign and she will be performing for the
Dhanu rashi or Sagittarius. Since it is a mythological act, Pratyusha
and her partner, Deepak poured over history and philosophy books to
make sure that they have the right version of the story and ” It was
like going back to school”, she quipped. Dancing to the title track of
Omkara, this duo will be seen giving an action packed performed armed
with their bow and arrows, ready to shoot them straight into the
hearts of their fans and hoping they walk away with the perfect 30.
Here’s wishing them luck for their mythological act this week.

Valanka Alemao-‘Criticisms are my stepping stones.’

Valanka Alemao, d/o Goa PWD Minister Churchill Alemao, is indeed a controversies’ child. Off lately being disqualified for contesting any elections for any post in the Indian Youth Congress for a period of one year, Valanka stands upright despite being victimized every time. She indeed carries a baggage of responsibilities & has public eye on her for everything that she does being a politician’s daughter. An easy target as always that she is, framed by destructive minds to target her father, Valanka believes it is a big conspiracy.

A woman of substance, Valanka’s total abstinence from abusing the power she is endowed with shows her character in plain light. She is a woman who has always laid emphasis on human life & has displayed it in her social work that covers all sections of society.

Taking social work to a different level altogether, Valanka, to empower woman & to help the common man, opened 30 self-help groups in different villages in Goa, helping the victims struck by flood when they were stripped off their possessions, restoration of facilities for the old age home, setting up recycling plant, garbage management camps & other countless deeds which were uncalled for. Unaffected by these vague criticisms which she considers as her stepping stones, she continues her fight & never afraid of putting forth her beliefs.

Currently setting up a political turbulence in Goa, Valanka filed this election petition calling in question the election of Shri Caetano Rosario Silva on the grounds of Silva not being a citizen of India, raising an extremely serious issue which even the framers of constitution could not have imagined. The media like always, after this episode, tagged her as being desperate for power. Little do they know that such cases will not make Valanka step back, instead such criticisms gets her going . She takes a stand & fights for it irrespective of what the society thinks.

As Valanka takes pride in Saying ‘People will say that you are going the wrong way, when it is simply a way of your own.’ She maintains the same pride & confidence when she exclaims ‘ I call on the youth to unite, to aid progress & sustainable development which can make a big difference in administration & governance in an age of corruption- free Goa.’

ADHM is an occasion that invites all like minded people to come together in the true spirit of camaraderie and run for a cause. Dedicated to the Spirit of friendship, we invite all ‘Dilike friends’to participate again in large numbers to make this the biggest and best year for the Half Marathon.”

The world’s most prestigious Half Marathon race, recognized by IAAF as a “Gold Label Event” and certified by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races, returns for the eighth year, and for the fifth time in its current avatar of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.

The occasion was also used to introduce Max Healthcare and BMW as the new Medical Partner and Vehicle Partner, respectively, to the event. According to Dr Ajay Bakshi, CEO Max Healthcare, “Max Healthcare is delighted to partner with the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon (ADMH), which has been rated as one of the topmost road running events in the world. Hence when women make fitness a part of their daily life it creates a change for the good,” said Bipasha Basu.

The event will also witness the presence of some of the biggest names from the world of sport as Event Ambassadors.

Top Road Running Competition in the World: The 2011 edition of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon was adjudged the Top Road Running Competition of the World according to the Competition Rankings of All-Athletics.com, the world’s most comprehensive athletics database.

The Rankings are based on the participation of top athletes plus the achieved results. The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon was adjudged best in all three categories, namely men and women combined; men only and women only. The event scored over much older and established events like the Ras-Al Khaimah International Half Marathon (UAE), the Philadelphia ING Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon (USA), the Den Haag City-Pier-City Half Marathon (NED) and the Lisboa Meia Maratona de Lisboa (POR).

Boost to serious runners: The practice of putting a chip on the shoes of all half marathon participants since the last three years has been welcomed by one and all and has helped elevate the level of the half marathon field to an extent where all participants in that category can be termed serious runners.

Going further, promoters Procam International will recognize the efforts of the serious runners by offering priority starts to them based on their timings. Based on the timing certificates, runners will be eligible for priority lineups on race day and will be divided into four sections. The first section will be for runners under two hours, followed by those between 2 hours and 2.30 hours. The third section will be for runners of 2.30 to 3 hours. The fourth section will be for runners of 3 hours and above and those with no timing certificates.

The timing certificate will also ensure that the applicant gets preference over non-timed participants in the registration process. There will also be a number of running places reserved for women applicants to encourage them to train and run in the half marathon. Applicants who are not timed will fall in the open category, for which there will be limited places that will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

It is evident from the number of people registering for the half marathon, that the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon has helped inculcate the culture of running and fitness among the populace of Delhi. Last year around 8,000 people registered for the half marathon and the figure is expected to be higher this time around as 10,000 running spaces have been reserved for the Half Marathon category.

Besides the Half Marathon, which occupies pride of place, race day has been packed with features like the Great Delhi Run, the Senior Citizen’s Run and the Wheelchair Event, giving every Delhiite above the age of 12 an opportunity to emerge winners in their own right.

Inter-Collegiate Sporting Challenge: Delhi’s Universities and colleges enjoy a rich and glorious sporting tradition and have helped create many national and international sportspersons in various disciplines. The Inter-Collegiate Sporting Challenge will now give these colleges a further opportunity to earn for themselves the unique distinction of being the Champion College of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. What better platform than an International event and what better inspiration than to be running alongside some of the world’s and India’s leading long distance athletes.

While invitations will be sent to all the universities of Delhi, participation will be restricted to only 20 college teams and entries will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. Only two teams will be allowed per college (one male team and one female team) and each team should comprise three members between the age of 17 to 23. Each member will be required to run approximately 7 kms.

The champion college will win prize money of Rs 30,000 and a replica of the rotating trophy, while the Runner-up team will take home Rs 15,000. The members of the winning teams will be presented with medals and merit certificates, while participation certificates will be awarded to the members of all the other teams.
