Team India Goes into Bat for Children’s Education

ICC and Emirates support the Room to Read ‘Check out Challenge’

Members of the India women’s cricket team today visited Colaba Primary Municipal Marathi School to inaugurate a library funded and established by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The visit showed the players’ support for Room to Read, a global non-profit organisation that aims to promote literacy and gender equality in education across Asian and African countries.

As part of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2013 commitment towards the local community in one of the host cities, Mumbai, the ICC is supporting a Room to Read initiated campaign, the ‘Checkout Challenge’ – which provides access for children to quality education and enhances cricket’s positive contribution to the society.

India captain Mithali Raj and pace bowler Jhulan Goswami visited the school and spent time with students in the school’s Room to Read library. The visit included a special storybook reading session, a reading ladder game and an autograph session.

ICC Commercial Partner, Emirates, is supporting this initiative by donating educational and informative local language children’s books to the library.

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.

Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organisations and governments, the charity aims to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

The ICC began its partnership with Room to Read at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 with a series of player activities, with Virat Kohli, Shane Watson and Angelo Mathews becoming global Room to Read Ambassadors. The partnership received further impetus at the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012.

Room to Read “Check out Challenge”

The “check out challenge” is a call to action to all Room to Read supporters to invest in programs that help provide a million plus books to children across the world. The ways of doing so will be either through a library or helping Room to Read publish an original children’s book. In 2013, Room to Read will publish 1.5 million copies of our original children’s books. These stories and others will fill the shelves of Room to Read’s network of more than 15,000 school libraries—opening up a world of imagination to young readers across Asia and Africa.

0110 International Digital Film Festival 2013 opens with Keanu Reeves’ Side by Side

· Screening of Side By Side at the festival marks the acclaimed documentary’s India premier

February 2nd 2013, Mumbai: 0110 International Digital Film Festival, the most recognized Digital film festival in South Asia which has also gained the reputation of being the home for New Wave cinema, opened tonight at Whistling Woods International with the screening of SIDE BY SIDE. The enthusiasm and magnificence of the opening night set the tone for the remaining duration of the festival, promising a successful run.

The festival also marked the India premiere of the opening film, SIDE BY SIDE, a documentary film which explores the revolution in the process of filmmaking, from the photochemical film to digital means and speculates on what the future might bring. Capturing the attention of the audience and the film fraternity alike, SIDE BY SIDE left its audience in rapture with its fascinating subject and storytelling. Festival director, Madhureeta Anand was extremely pleased with the reception.

Speaking of the festival and the opening night she said, “Since the inception of this festival, our aim has been to provide a platform for new age digital cinema from across the globe and especially India. There is a plethora of talent in this country, and we are glad to provide the stage to showcase the same. This is our first year in Mumbai, and the response has been great so far. We are anticipating the audience reaction to the other movies we would be showcasing this year, it is an interesting list of movies from all over the world”

Having officially screened director Q’s (Qaushiq Mukherjee) Gandu at last year’s edition, the festival has once again ensured screening of quality cutting edge films from around the world. Mumbai, February 2nd, 2013: Felicitating the best of the best, the first ever COLORS International Advertising Association (IAA) Leadership Awards were held today, at Grand Hyatt, Mumbai, bringing together media professionals from across categories. Celebrating innovative thinking and performance excellence, the awards aimed at indirectly seeking to acknowledge the fact that the disciplines of marketing, advertising and media have to come together for a brand’s success. Present as the chief guest at the event was Shri Manish Tewari, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting who honored the winners with the first ever IAA Leadership Award trophy. Amongst the winners, Bollywood actor, Salman Khan makes his first ever appearance at an awards function with IAA Leadership Awards. The actor known to have bagged maximum endorsements and is on a high with brands queuing to sign him, wins the award for the Brand Endorser of the Year – Male.

The awards ceremony covered categories across marketing, advertising and media, bringing the who’s who of the corporate world under one roof. Besides the below, among the winners, Y C Deveshwar won the award for the CEO of the Year while Piyush Pandey, Ogilvy & Mather India won the award for the Creative Agency Head of the Year.
