Stylist Komal Shahani goes colorful for Asin’s look in Khiladi 786

Acclaimed stylist Komal Shahani has plenty praise coming her way for the unique and quirky styling of Akshay Kumar and Asin starrer Khiladi 786.

Keeping in mind Asin’s character as a boisterous Marathi girl, Komal went all out to find traditional drapes which kept to Asin’s style quotient “Keeping in sync with her character she will be seen in a look never before from Hip grungy looks to eccentric coloured kashta sarees with authentic assorted Maharastrian jewellery and Asin is a person who could carry it off so gracefully.(Asin’s) wardrobe for Khiladi 786 in two words – classy and defiant.”

New Zealand – The real Middle-earth

When Sir Peter Jackson went looking for the ideal place to film his blockbuster adaptations of the classic books by J.R.R.Tolkien, he didn’t have to travel far from home – in fact the world-famous director reckons his country, New Zealand, is the perfect Middle-earth. Jackson shot the opening sequence for the first movie in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy just up the hill from the Wellington peninsula where he lives and works. Now 12 years on and preparing to release the first film in The Hobbit Trilogy – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Jackson is still filming in the neighbourhood. So what is it about his home country that fits so perfectly with Jackson’s imaginings of Middle-earth?

New Zealand’s real Middle-earth landscapes

Even without the technical wizardry employed by Jackson and his Weta team, the unique and diverse geography of New Zealand’s North and South Islands is naturally the nearest thing on earth to Middle-earth – the term used to describe the “lands of men” or “mortal lands” depicted in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies.

Since the first movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring, New Zealand has been dubbed Middle-earth and Rings fans, or Ringons, continue to travel to the country to experience the mountains, lakes, rivers and plains that became the backdrops for the movies’ famous scenes. And, now that New Zealand scenery is about to hit the big screen again, there’s eager anticipation as to the new locations that will have a starring role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Locations likely to wow

Jared Connon, supervising locations manager for The Hobbit, and a scout for both trilogies, says there are 40 different locations for these new movies – some in the same regions and nearly the same spot as for The Lord of the Rings, and yet they still look different and are likely to wow viewers. He says the film makers scouted locations over a period of two years, across rivers, mountains, forests, lakes and plains always in search of the perfect Middle-earth scenery. “While there were always plenty of options available to choose from, it was the director’s discerning eye that knew that only the most dramatic scenery was going to fit his vision of Middle-earth. There was never any doubt that we were scouting across Middle-earth, it was just which parts of New Zealand would help best translate that magical story from paper to screen,” says Connon.

The journey from Hobbiton

In The Hobbit Trilogy, the journey commences when the Company departs the lush green countryside of Hobbiton near Matamata in the North Island region of Waikato, and traverses the length and breadth of New Zealand. The terrain slowly transforms into a more wild and dramatic landscape the further they continue on their adventure. Connon says the great thing is that passing below towering limestone bluffs, trekking through majestic beech forests, dashing across arid high country terrain and scaling the alpine reaches of mountainous peaks isn’t just reserved for cast members of The Hobbit Trilogy production. “It can also be experienced by travellers of all ages and descriptions who wish to undertake their own unexpected journey of New Zealand,” he says.

Tours and visitors

Since the revealing of locations for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – of which there were more than 150 different sites throughout the North and South Islands – there has been a steady stream of visitors wanting to experience the reality. The multi-award winning films inspired New Zealand businesses to provide tours to the sites of memorable scenes and they operate in more than 30 locations. Tourists – ‘Rings’ fans or not – continue to travel down Hobbit paths, hand-make their own personal ‘One Ring’ and handle replica swords, flags and helmets. A 2004 survey revealed that 6% of visitors (around 120-150,000 people) cited The Lord of the Rings films as being one of the main reasons for visiting New Zealand. Of that, one percent said it was their main reason for coming to the country, relating to approximately NZ$32.8 million in spends. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy generated US$2.9 billion in worldwide box-office receipts, and another US$3 billion from DVDs, merchandise and other sources.

Rahul Dravid launches “SACHIN: Born To Bat – The journey of Cricket’s ultimate centurion”

Written by veteran journalist Khalid A-H Ansari and edited by Clayton Murzello, the book is a unique ode to contemporary cricket’s finest batsman

Mumbai, 22 November 2012: Former India cricket captain Rahul Dravid released “Sachin Born to Bat – The journey of cricket’s ultimate centurion” at a glittering function at the Cricket Club of India on Thursday.

Published by Jaico Books, it is written by veteran journalist Khalid A-H Ansari and edited by MiD DAY’s Group Sports Editor Clayton Murzello.

Dravid waxed eloquent on Tendulkar, his former batting partner with whom he has put up many a splendid partnership in Test cricket. Dravid retired from international cricket after the Australia tour earlier this year.

Celebrated commentator Harsha Bhogle was Master of Ceremonies for the evening, remembered being at Old Trafford in the English summer of 1990 where Sachin Tendulkar scored the first of his 100 international centuries.

The book also includes his despatch on that memorable, match-saving hundred for which Sachin Tendulkar received the Man of the Match award.

The book is a compilation of various articles on the cricketing God from 1986 to 2012, covering the commendable journey from his formative years to the times of eternal glory and success.

Sachin Tendulkar has penned the introduction for the book. He writes: “Through this book, it is as if I have lived through the many moments in my life, in words and pictures.”

In a special message for the book release, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar said: “Sachin Tendulkar is a special player and it needs a special writer to do justice to his skills and ability and there is none better than Khalid Ansari to do so. I wish the evening every success and I am sure the book will be avidly read by not just Sachin fans, but all cricket lovers.”

About the book:

Sachin: Born to Bat is a unique ode to one of contemporary cricket’s finest batsman – Sachin Tendulkar. In the words of the author: “This is an attempt to impartially probe the crucial mental, physical and emotional ingredients of a cricketing ‘God’. I have tried to turn the laser on the maestro’s persona – innumerable blemishes and all – to prevent the book from degenerating into a shabaash, wah-wah hagiography. For all his splendiferous achievements, Sachin has also shown that he is a mere mortal with feet of clay – witness his run-ins with authority, cricketing and civil.” Some of the world’s most famous names in cricket writing – Ayaz Memon, Harsha Bhogle, Ian Chappell, Mike Coward, Peter Roebuck and other luminaries – grace the pages of this book. Tributes from cricket’s most famous personalities including Tendulkar’s Team India teammates and coaches make this publication invaluable in helping cricket enthusiasts understand what makes Sachin the peerless champion he is. The book also captures critical moments of Tendulkar’s wondrous cricketing career from photographers who have followed him throughout his distinguished career.

About the author:

Until his recent retirement, Padma Shri Khalid A-H Ansari was the guiding force of Mid Day Infomedia Ltd which publishes the newspaper (in two languages from Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Pune), the Inquilab Daily and other publications. He was the publisher of the magazine Sportsweek, which he started in 1968 to champion the cause of Indian sport and sportsmen until 1989, when he took up an assignment abroad. The author of three earlier books, he covered the Kargil war in 1999, the NAM conference in Harare and the CHOGM summit in the Bahamas. He was also a member of the Indian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 and published the Earth Times, the official paper for the 1994 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. He has the distinction of having covered nine Olympic Games going back to Munich ’72 and is a recipient of several honors and awards.

About the editor:

Clayton Murzello is MiD DAY’s Group Sports Editor and has been a journalist since 1988. He is a recipient of two Sports Journalists Federation of India (SFJI) awards for excellence in journalism. He has co-authored a book on cricket anecdotes with former Test cricketer Sandeep Patil.
