Spectacular start to Hero Hockey India League; Delhi Waveriders launch campaign with a victory

New Delhi, 14 January 2013: Hosts Delhi Waveriders launched their campaign in the Hero Hockey India League with a comfortable 2-1 victory over Jaypee Punjab Warriors at the Major Dhyanchand National stadium here on Monday.

Germany’s Oskar Deecke (14th min) and Gurwinder Singh Chandi (22nd) found the net for the winners while Australian Keiran Govers (42nd) scored the consolation goal for the visitors.

Before the tournament opener, a laser show light up the Delhi sky and the spectators witnessed a special performance from figure skaters Alifya and Yuri and daredevil stunts of Jeenea set the tempo for the inaugural edition of the tournament and the sizeable crowd at the National stadium was hoping for a quality encounter in the opening match of the inaugural edition of Hero HIL and the teams did not disappoint.

The match began at a very high tempo with the hosts squandering a goal scoring opportunity in the very first minute.

With the Punjab Warriors pushing hard in their very first attacking move, the field was open for a an counterattack and Waveriders New Zealand forward Simon Child had just the goalkeeper to beat but he wasn’t that sharp to pounce on the opportunity despite taking three shots at goal.

Both the teams then tried to settle in the rhythm and it was the hosts who drew first blood in the 14th minute when Child began a move from the left and German international Oskar Deecke’s reverse hit was deflected inside the goal off the stick of a Warrior defender.

The Waveriders had an opportunity to double the lead in the 20th minute when Gaganpreet Singh’s harsh tackle on Child handed them their first penalty corner but Rupinder Pal Singh’s drag flick failed to beat the goalkeeper.

However, they had to wait just two minutes to find the second goal. India international Gurwinder Singh Chandi made a probing run from outside the 25 yards line on the right and his hit towards the goal was deflected in by the stick of Warrior defender Mark Knowles of Australia.

The hosts were obviously the dominating team in the second quarter but Rupinder could not convert the two penalty corners on the stroke on half time that could have given his team an almost unassailable lead.

The change of sides seemed to have woken up the Warriors as they began showing more intent in their attack and they were rewarded in the 42nd minute when S V Sunil broke through the right and Australian Keiran Govers showed his prowess in the box with a reverse hit in the top left hand corner.

The Warriors were indebted to their custodian Jaap Stockmann of Netherlands to have kept them in the hunt with almost half a dozen good saves but their forward line failed to make any clear breakthroughs inside the Delhi goal. Stockmann was adjudged Man-of-the-Match of the first match.

Jaypee Punjab Warriors’ coach Barry Dancer said at the post-match press conference that the team’s performance was not up to the mark and needs more improvement but said: “The team had better coordination and saw a much better performance in the second half. I am sure that the team will bounce back in the next match.”

Man-of-the-Match Stockmann Jacob believes that the team was really unlucky in the first half and lacked coordination. “Having played our first match as a team there was bound to be some confusion, we require much more practice and need to play together some more. But the team quickly learnt from the first half and performed far better in the second scoring a goal. We are sure to improve our performance in our next games,” he added.

On the other hand, Delhi Waveriders coach Ajay Kumar Bansal was excited with their current performance and feels that they have overshot their expectations by scoring two goals in the opening game. “The team was really positive and we have a lot to take back from this game. We have some areas to improve such as defence and are sure to come back as a much better team next game. We are really happy with the crowd today and thank all our supporters,” stated the only Indian coach in the Hero HIL at the post-match press conference.

Skipper Sardar Singh was very satisfied as the teams planning and execution was in sync today and said: “The first game is always crucial for the teams’ moral and we executed our roles well emerging victorious. Having played for a short span together we are really satisfied with our performance.”

The Hero Hockey India League is organised by Hockey India with official sanction from the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The inaugural season is being played from January 14 to February 10, 2013 in a home-and-away format. The five franchisee-based teams, consisting of the top hockey players from India and around the world, will compete for the prestigious trophy. Managing Director, Procam International, the promoters of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon.

Some of the most inspirational stories around the charity effort are showcased below:

Rahul Kadri for Save the Children, India

For Dream Champion, Rahul Kadri, Managing Director, Kadri Consultants Pvt Ltd, this is the 5th year of his association with SCMM. “It has been a great focal point in my life and a catalyst to raise my fitness level from near zero to having a target of running the half marathon this year in less than 2 hours, barefoot. It’s a wonderful opportunity for collecting funds for my favourite charity – ‘Save The Children India’. Over the years I have raised over 60 lakh, benefiting thousands of children. The organisation of the Marathon is just amazing in its smoothness and a celebration for the entire city. The strong association with United Way of Mumbai and hundreds of charities is indeed truly inspiring! The benefit of the marathon goes far beyond the fitness levels of the participants to innumerable less privileged citizens greatly benefiting from the event.”

Shaantanu Mukherji For Salaam Bombay Foundation

Shaan, has been associated with the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, since 2011, when he was approached to record the event theme song which was used for the 8th edition of the race. Having raised Rs. 17 lakh last year Shaan says, “this year, for its 10th edition, I along with Salaam Bombay Foundation am raising funds to fulfill a 1000 Dreams of students who are pursuing their academics. We are raising funds to empower young minds and also give them enough strength to stay away from tobacco and other forms of substance abuse. I am running to create a stronger and healthier future for the next generation! “

Sunil Rawlani for Childline India Foundation

Taking his passion for running marathons to even a higher level is Sunil Rawlani, for whom it is the 8th year of participation. Training 6 days a week he plans to better his past record of 2 hours and 20 minutes for the half marathon. Supporting Childline India Foundation, he believes that every child belongs in a playground, a home and a school. He says, “I decided to work for underprivileged children and touch as many lives as possible in the most meaningful way. The cause keeps me committed. It’s great to be part of about 500 people training from Marine Drive to Worli Seaface or Juhu beach on Sunday morning at 6 a.m. It is inspiring when you find senior citizens making the effort.” He has raised over Rs. 26 lakh through these years.

Suranjana Ghosh for The Association of People with Disability

Courage personified is Dream Maker Suranjana Ghosh, a cancer survivor. An above knee amputee herself since she was 18, she is running and raising funds for ‘The association of People with Disability’, this year. “I never gave up on my dream of being a successful professional. I did an MBA & went on to work for several multinationals, both in India & in the UK. The cause of education for physically disabled children from underprivileged backgrounds is of special importance to me. I believe that education & opportunities for employment for the physically challenged, help mainstream them into self-reliant, confident achievers – putting them on an even keel as the physically able.

Today, a successful senior executive, Suranjana is aiming to challenge her own physical limits. She believes, “the number of things you can do, will always be more than what you can’t, despite physical limitations. What matters is the access to opportunities.” This is her small way of making a difference.

Isha Jain for Isha Vidya

Into her third year, running the Dream Run, Isha Jain, a 15-year-old student, influenced by her parents, has decided to raise funds this year. She says, “I organized myself for the Dream Wizard challenge. With the help of my parents, I wrote to about 300 people, called dozens of them, followed up constantly on email, Facebook and met many for a face to face talk. The convenience of having an online donation page by United Way was a boon for closing on the collections! To make sure I’m doing everything I can to help these children, I have asked all of my friends to donate to Isha Vidhya, instead of giving me a gift on the 20th of January 2013, which happens to be my 16th birthday. I could not ask for a better birthday gift for myself than being instrumental in changing the lives of even a few of rural kids at Isha Vidhya.”

Siddhartha Dev for Center for Hearing Impaired Children

An employee of KPMG, Mr. Dev has been associated with SCMM and United Way for the last three years, and has raised around 17 lakh for Center for Hearing Impaired Children (CHIC), Jamshedpur. He says, “I wish to transform a child labeled ‘deaf & dumb’ into a talking youngster leading an independent and productive life. This can be done through concerted and committed efforts and use of modern day technology. Many people want to help but they just don’t know how to go about it. United Way and SCMM provides the platform, comfort and security that the money will not be misused and will reach the real beneficiaries. Most importantly, it gives me an opportunity to give back to the society and provides me with a goal to help me keep fit to a certain degree.

Meera Mehta for Shrimad Rajchandra Love & Care

The youngest Dream team participant of last year and this year, Meera has registered as a Dream Wizard this year. She says, “Last year I raised funds totaling to Rs. 1.5 lakhs. I saw the changes that the funds raised made to many lives and this inspired me to raise the bar for fund raising to Rs. 5 lakhs this year. What was amazing in my experience of fund raising this year was that many of my friends, relatives and people who were inspired by my efforts last year came forward on their own on their special occasions and pledged funds for Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care. “ Her inspiration is her Guruji, Pujya Guruvevshri Rakeshbhai, who has instilled in her since childhood to help others in need.

They are just a few among the 2000+ fundraisers championing the cause of the various participating charities. United Way Mumbai in its role as the charity partner serves as the philanthropic exchange bringing together charities, corporate and individuals in a credible platform for giving. Each participating NGO undergoes a background due diligence process.

Sunny Leone to perform Kakad Aarti for Ragini MMS-2 tomorrow!

There’s nothing that Balaji and Sunny Leone are not doing to make RAGINI MMS-2 an even hotter proposition than what it is at the moment.

The film commences shoot in Mumbai on 15th January, an auspicious day after Makar Sankrant. And before its commencement, Sunny will be visiting the Siddhi Vinayak Temple at 4.30 a.m. on the 15th to perform the Kakad Aarti.

“Given that it is horror, we want to start the film on an auspicious note,” said Ekta Kapoor, while adding, “The film is keenly awaited and as always we’re going to put our best foot forward!”

It may be noted that the Hanuman Chalisa had been added to the original RAGINI MMS to dispel evil.

The 2011 sensuous paranormal thriller where a couple’s dirty weekend soon turns into something that is beyond the realm of human understanding had emerged the biggest “small” film of the year. The company this time around is looking at a sequel even bigger and bolder than the original.

RAGINI MMS-2 is expected to release on October 11.

Spiritual

Ocean of compassion

“Know that he who treats parents with due respect, follows the guru’s commands and honours guests is sure to attract prosperity and happiness.”-Shri Radhe Guru Maa

Mumbai. The guru has been equated with God in the Indian spiritual tradition. The grace of the guru benefits the ordinary neophyte as well as the Lion who walks the path of renunciation. Both categories of seekers reach their goals faster and more safely under the guidance of the guru. Such a guru is also considered indispensable for householders who seek a life of strength, prosperity and happiness. No wonder Kabir says he would bow to guru first if guru and God were to appear before him because were it not for the Guru, Kabir would not have realised God.

Sadgurus appear on earth to elevate mortals trapped in the snares of materialism. Such pious souls dedicate their lives to spreading the light of spiritual knowledge, unmindful of criticism and praise. Meerabai was one such soul. She never wavered and continued to spread the light of bhakti all her life despite attempts on her reputation and life. Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa is a guru in the same tradition of Sanatan Hindu dharma.

Even as a child, Radhe Guru Maa’s commitment towards speaking the truth, following dharma and self-control was complete and unwavering. Such signs marked her as a sadguru who would make a mark in the lives of millions. It was a matter of time before devotees began to be drawn to her as moths are to a fire. The fire, one of viveka, has helped many to discriminate the false from the true and build happy, productive and abundant lives. Her deep compassion for suffering being often finds expression in the tears that loll down her cheeks as she prays to Lord Shiva and his consort Maa Durga. She prays so her ishta devatas shower their grace on all who suffer. Guru Maa has discouraged construction of temples in her name and has said on numerous occasions said that her temples are in the hearts of her followers. Guru Maa asks her devotees to maintain distance from all evil thoughts, deeds and activities if one wishes to prosper in one’s personal and professional life. She says true success can only come to those who keep their parents happy and treat guests with honour.

Guru Maa says that those who pray, trust God and surrender unconditionally to Him become worthy of His grace. Guru Maa treats her poor as well as rich devotees with the same affection. Like Meera and Bhakt Prahlad, Guru Maa’s life is a living example of bhakti in action. A Vishal Bhagwati Jagaran will be organized every year on 3rd March on shri Radhe Maa’s birthday in Mumbai.

( Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa is a living example of selfless bhakti that is the hallmark of the Sanatan Hindu tradition)
