SAB TV ropes in Giaa Manek for its next ‘Jeannie aur Juju’

SAB TV ropes in Giaa Manek for its next ‘Jeannie aur Juju’

Mumbai, September 4, 2012: The last you saw of the sylph Jeannie, was in a dubbed version of the popular American 80s show way back in the 90s here in India. Well, the news now is that SAB TV has purchased the rights to “I dream of Jeannie”, and is adapting it for our country!

Sticking mostly to the original content and story of the show originally created and produced by legendary author Sidney Sheldon, the Indian adaptation on SAB TV will show a pilot setting free a Jeannie from two thousand years of imprisonment inside the proverbial bottle, and the two eventually falling in love. With Ali Asgar playing the pilot and Giaa Manek playing Jeannie, the show promises to deliver a dish with delicious Indian flavours, charmingly funny and cute.

Giaa Manek, known for having portrayed a very cute and lovable bahu on a popular daily, was recently seen in an even more popular dance reality show, wherein, graduating from Pallus and Saris to western outfits and some spectacular dance moves had the judges applauding endlessly. She now portrays the Jeannie, adorable in harem pants and shimmering outfits, trying to charm her savior and the love of her life, Vicky (played by Ali Asgar), into falling in love with her.

Commenting on Jeannie aur Juju, Mr. Anooj Kapoor EVP and Business Head SAB TV said, “With Giaa in the show, we’re sure to attract a huge audience to watch the show as she has a big fan following. Giaa’s innocence works for the character and Ali’s experience will enhance the show even further. The show is unique as it will have special effects and tricks that Jeannie performs. It is an uncommon genre on Indian television and the audience will surely enjoy the novelty we are providing them.”

Giaa plays a Jeannie in the show, who has been caught in a bottle for 2000 years. When Vicky finds the bottle, he frees her accidently. Giaa is liberated and has Vicky to thank, with whom she falls arduously in love from the moment their eyes meet. Putting Vicky into trouble, eventually getting him out of trouble and playing cute is what Giaa does best. The show offers oodles of delight and humour that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Be prepared for Jeannie’s infectious charm and the magic tricks she will play on you, only on SAB TV!

“In the serial ‘Hum Phir Milenge’ I get to play a Crucial Character” – Raj Zutshi

Having performed in serials like ‘Virasaat’ and ‘Baazaar’ and touched the heights of renown, Raj Zutshi got so busy with films that he moved away from the small screen. After 14 long years he is back on ‘colours’ in the serial ‘Madhubala’ as ‘Balraaj Chaudhary’ and he also seen on Doordarshan’s National Network portraying ‘Narendra’ in the serial Hum ‘Phir Milenge’. The interesting part is that in a very brief period the negative character Narendra has become a focus of the audience’s interest.

Any specific reason why you returned to TV after 14 years?

I received popularity when I worked with ‘Rakesh Chowdhary’ for his production company ‘Samvaad Video’ way back in 1995 for ‘Virasat’ and in 2001 for ‘Bazaar’. I am a fan of Rakesh Chowdhary’s style of work. I am a fan of his style of writing and making serials. As an artist I totally enjoy the way he develops and presents his screenplay. After the serial ‘Baazaar’ I got busy with films. The fact is I am basically a film actor. But when Rakesh Chowdhary asked me to portray the character of ‘Narendra’ in the serial ‘Hum Phir Milenge’, after hearing the story and the character I was so excited that I immediately decided to return to the small screen. I shot for ‘Hum Phir Milenge’ but the telecast of the serial got delayed. Meanwhile I got the chance to play the character of Balraaj Choudhary in the serial ‘Madhubala’ on ‘colours’ and I agreed. At present for some time the character of Balraaj Choudhary has vanished. During this period Rakesh Chowdhary’s serial ‘Hum Phir Milenge’ began its telecast on Doordarshan’s National Network every Monday and Tuesday at 9 pm. People are loving the character of Narendra, far more then I had ever expected. Even today I am very busy with films. But the serial Hum Phir Milenge telecasts only 2 days a week, and this is another reason why I decided to join this serial.

What do you wish to say about your character in the serial ‘Hum Phir Milenge’?

The audiences get to see me in the role of Narendra, who is the negative character of the serial. But Narendra is a pillar of the story. All the conflicts that are in the story have their root in Narendra. To portray such a crucial character is in itself a very new and interesting experience.

Could you highlight the character of Narendra in detail?

Narendra is the eldest son of a very big industrialist. He is arrogant, a troublemaker. He unsuccessfully tries to molest Chandni Malik who works as a maid in their mansion. He is a spoilt brat from a rich family. If I say more than this then I will be spoiling the audience’s fun by giving away the climax. But I can assure you that people will see in this character many things which they can relate to.

What was your experience while working for the serial ‘Hum Phir Milenge’?

It was a unique experience. I am feeling very happy. I enjoy doing realistic roles. And this serial, its characters, and the sequence of events, is to a very large extent realistic.

What do you feel about your return to television?

The truth is that I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to TV as a medium. During the past 14 years the TV as a medium has transformed at a tremendous rate. A lot of things have changed. To align myself to this change is something I want to learn. I am trying to understand the functioning of the television industry today. And I am happy that I have got to play a strong character in ‘Hum Phir Milenge’.

Are you not enjoying working on Television?

I didn’t say that. I don’t do any work that I do not enjoy. I loved the story of ‘Hum Phir Milenge’. But I somehow feel that rather than fiction I should do a reality based show on television. I would love to do some non-fiction work for television. Bollywood’s superstar Aamir Khan presented a program like ‘Satyamev Jayate’ on television where the show became the conscience of the nation. I too would love to do a show on small screen which focusses on social concerns.

So are you making a program for television?

I am thinking on a couple of ideas. Many years ago ‘Kameleshwar’ used to make a program called ‘Ghoomta Aaina’. I wish to do an interesting program like that. I want to talk with viewers and bring to them the lives and problems of common day to day people around us. I want to package all this into an interesting program. I have even spoken to a channel about this.

Which are your films in the pipeline?

2012 has brought a new turn in my career. It is the first time that I have got to play the main role. And that too not in one but in five or six films all at once. One film is director Chetan Singh’s ‘Bathtub’, this is a psychological thriller. I play the main protagonist of the film. Besides this ‘Kya Delhi Kya Lahore’ is ready. I have played a soldier Barfi Singh. Who is a postman. Besides this I have done NFDC films ‘Gangubai’ and ‘As the River Flows’. I am working with Nana Patekar in ‘Ab Tak Chappan 2’ where I play the main villain. I am also doing Siddharth Kumar’s film ‘Checkmate’. The films are many and I am doing a different kind of a role in each of them.

What types of characters do you wish to play in future?

I do not like repetitiveness. From the beginning I have been portraying distinctive dissimilar characters. Till date I have maintained my oath of playing a variety of characters and will do the same in the future. I love playing diverse characters in films of different genres. The characters that I have portrayed in the films which are releasing in 2012 will surprise the audiences. Not only that, but having returned to television after 14 years, I am seen in very distinct roles whether it is ‘Madhubala’ or my character in ‘Hum Phir Milenge’

Seems you are very happy with your career?

I am feeling as if I am now getting the fruits of all my hard work. This year I am getting to play the main role in all my films. My career is taking a new turn. That is why I am enjoying my work very much.
