Pritish Nandy honoured in Bangladesh

Noted humanitarian, poet, journalist, photographer, TV host, painter, editor, columnist, and filmmaker Pritish Nandy just added another feather to his already feathered cap. He was invited by the Government of Bangladesh for a special State honour on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Liberation struggle. The awards ceremony on December 15. was to honour those who participated in the liberation struggle of Bangladesh and helped the nation become free. Pritish Nandy attended the event along with his wife Rina. Talking about the honour Nandy says, “’The birth of Bangladesh was a miracle. Most wars end in stalemate but Indira Gandhi won it decisively and with amazing precision. I was proud to play a role in the making of a new nation, a nation born out of the love for a language and a proud culture: Bengali.”

The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, who is also the National Convenor of the Friends of the Bangladesh Liberation Struggle, recently wrote to Nandy saying that though it is forty years late, it is never too late to recognise and honour someone who did so much for their freedom struggle. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the formation of Bangladesh.

Nandy, barely entering his twenties then, was one of the most ardent campaigners for a free Bangladesh. He reported first hand on the war for freedom, translated the works of the then little known poets of the Bangladesh movement who are now iconic figures in Bengali literature across the border and got them published from London, Chicago and other parts of the world to bring focus to their war efforts, and was one of the central figures of the movement when he lived in Calcutta in the early seventies. All the leaders of the freedom struggle were his personal friends, including Sheikh Mujibur Rehman who became the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Interestingly, the man who subsequently assassinated him, Major Dalim was also known to Nandy during the freedom struggle days when he came to Calcutta as a young army officer for medical treatment after a serious grenade injury. Nandy was a leading poet then and some of his own poems in the book Madness is the Second Stroke were inspired by the Bangladesh war. The famous British painter Feliks Topolski collaborated with Pritish Nandy to bring out poems from Bangladesh, a book of poems from London. Nandy is one of Indian poetry’s most celebrated name whose books, record albums and readings have drawn him an iconic following and won him the Padma Shri and the EM Forster Literary Award at an age most people barely begin their literary career.

Nandy launched his production company Pritish Nandy Communications Ltd, in 1998, which has made over 25 films over the past decade including (Kaante, Jhankaar Beats, Chameli, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Shabd, Pyaar Ke Side Effects) now acclaimed as cult movies. His next production, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, starring Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan rolls next year.

In spite of the jovial ambience while shooting, the team would get gooseflesh even while having a gala time because during the darkness of the night the sounds they heard would make their ears pop and heart beat faster.

During such dread filled nights the cast and crew would huddle together and no one dared to leave the premise alone! The cries of animals were mind shattering and filming a supernatural film only piqued the eeriness. The rustling sounds behind the bushes were oft heard but when a crew member dared to check the premises with a fire lit torch he would find nothing. And at the sunrise the residents of the area would discuss about having traced the presence of a Leopard or a wolf in the surrounding, having grasped such knowledge was enough to make anybody go weak in the knee or result in severe consequences like heart failure on the thoughts of what would have happened had they come across the beast?!

Fortunately the shooting was done without getting so much as a scratch from the beasts loitering the premises or the horror tales while shooting of this horror film would be far from being heard or read since there would be no one to reiterate these tales!

The film made under the banner of (Chandigarh based) Pinta & Dehal production is written and directed by Harish Sharma, the screenplay is written by Meenakshi Sharma and Suman Prasad. The music is given by Varsha and the playback singers are Varsha and Milli Moonstone. Camera is handled by Prakash Chand. The film stars serial Office- Office fame veteran actor Hemant Pandey along with Debutants Sumeet Sharma,Aakshi Khari,Gaurav Shah,Meenakshi Arya, Suumit Sharrma and British singer-actress Milli Moonstone.

Pinta & Dehal Productions film “2 Nights in soul valley” which is directed by Harish Sharma has released its music under the same production house of Pinta & Dehal Productions. The music of the film “2 Nights in soul valley” is such that it will not just scare you but will be melody to ears as well.

The music of the film is given by two ladies; one is Varsha Narayanan who is a singer and composer as also an eye doctor. Yeda Patil to take forward RR Patil’s anti-dance bars mission!

As if to compliment Maharashtra Home Minister R.R.Patil’s drive to ban dance bars in Mumbai and other parts of the state, an eccentric police inspector Yeda Patil is all set to wreck havoc on the business, claiming that it promotes drugs and prostitution.

Before you jump about who Yeda Patil is, let us tell you that he is none other than the whimsical cop played by Sachiin Joshi in his forthcoming feature film Mumbai Mirror.

R.R.Patil, who has long-crusaded against dance bars, was recently quoted saying, “The decision (to ban dance bars) was taken to prevent the younger generation from getting spoiled by the dance bar culture.”

“The entire system was getting corrupt because of it and the business had become synonymous with crime,” the Home Minister had added.

Sachiin Joshi echoes the fiery minister’s righteous sentiment. “In Mumbai Mirror, we have explored the real reason behind why dance bars in Mumbai were shut. What a lot of people don’t know is that there was a lot of drug dealing and prostitution which was rampant in these bars.”

“If you are looking for similarities, then you can say that like the minister, Yeda Patil has his own way of doing things,” informs Sachiin. “But while R.R.Patil did everything in accordance with the law, Yeda takes matters in his own hands.”

Sherlyn Chopra turns Santa Claus for street kids!

As if readying herself for the cover of the world’s most famous men’s magazine Playboy and bagging a role in Rupesh Paul’s international motion picture Kamasutra 3D wasn’t enough; firebrand Sherlyn Chopra donned a Santa Claus costume to gift and entertain street kids and underprivileged children this week.

Joining hands with an enterprising NGO called The Ray of Hope, Sherlyn spent some heart-rendering moments with kids and even sang Jingle Bells on popular demand.

“The best gift one could offer underprivileged children is stability and that can only be achieved by the mighty force of education,” said Sherlyn.

“In the days to come, I plan to work alongside The Ray of Hope NGO to provide better food, shelter, clothing and education to the kids they take care of,” she informed.

When we called her publicist Dale Bhagwagar and inquired about the absence of media at the event, he remarked, “Charity is second nature to Sherlyn, but it’s also a bit personal for her.”

“Though I do wish to call the press at least for the sake of promoting the causes, Sherlyn normally requests me to skip the media for her charity events, unless it’s a necessity,” he added.

Episodic Synopsis – Day 71

Chor Police in the Bigg Boss house

The day starts with a very apt song – “chor sipahi”. Early in the morning, Imam is upset with Niketan. Imam and Sana are seen in the kitchen area and Imam goes on about how Niketan is the rotten apple in the group that spoils the rest. Niketan, Sapna and Urvsahi exchange some facial expressions for which Imam gets offended. Imam feels that the housemates are bitching about him. He catches Delnaaz as she is the captain and tells her that he can hear the housemates plotting against him. Delnaaz tries to justify by saying that they were laughing at an internal joke but Imam remains stubborn. In sometime, Imam is seen with Niketan in the washroom. Imam fingers Niketan by passing demeaning comments and asking him to clean the toilet after using it. Niketan ignores him and walks off.

Imam gets agitated and starts calling him names. In sometime, Niketan goes into the captain’s washroom before Imam wanted to. Imam follows Niketan out till the dining area and shouts at him for using the washroom before him. The rest of the housemates share a big laugh at this incident. Imam goes in and takes a long time to come out. Meanwhile, Karishma, Urvashi and a few others wanted to use the washroom urgently. The captain tried to get Imam out but he was taking his own sweet time. The housemates get annoyed and complain to Bigg Boss via a camera. After Imam eventually comes out, the housemates react to Imam’s nuisance.

Bigg Boss assembles the housemates in the living area and announces their weekly budget task – ‘Chor, Police aur Aam aadmi’. Sapna, Niketan and Imam are the chors, Rajev, Sana and Urvashi are the Police and the rest of the housemates are the ‘aam janta’. Almost immediately after the housemates get up after the announcement, Imam and Sapna steal a bunch of money and run out to the garden area. The aam janta sees Sapna stealing and thus pressurize the police to arrest her. Urvashi catches her and locks her up in the jail placed in the garden area. Meanwhile, Imam hides his money in the washroom. In the process, he finds the money hidden by Sapna and Urvashi as well. Rajev goes to the kitchen and asks Aashka to give him some food without taking any money as his money was with Sana. Aashka tells him to pay first and then collect his food. Rajev gets upset at Aashka’s joke and walks out to the garden area.

Sapna and Niketan are seen plotting against Imam. Since both of them are in liaison with the ‘aam janta’. Sapna says that they’ll portray as if they get lunch for a meager sum of Rs. 10 in contrast to Rs. 300 charged to Imam from the ‘Aam janta’. The plot seems to work as Imam Questions the unfair treatment but he laughs it off by saying that he has enough money to survive himself. In sometime, Imam is caught stealing by the ‘aam janta’ in the kitchen area. The ‘Aam janta’ hand him over to the police and Imam is jailed by Rajev. Urvashi takes Sana into the washroom and explains how Imam had occupied the washroom and made it his hiding den. She also explains how Imam was bribed by her to strike a deal with her. In sometime, Sana is alone in the washroom and she finds all the money Imam had hidden under the sink of the washbasin. While, Sana is busy hiding the notes, Vishal walks in on her. Sana tells him everything and tells him to keep shut.

Imam escapes from the jail as the cops were missing from their spot in the garden area. He runs in to the room but not for long as Rajev and Sana capture him and put him back inside. Towards the end of the night, Karishma goes to Imam and offers him some food to eat but Imam stays adamant on not eating as he was cheated in the afternoon by the ‘Aam Aadmis’ .
