Actress Evelyn Sharma finds herself amidst political controversy!

A stage performance by Bollywood actress Evelyn Sharma at the Saifai Mahotsav festival in Uttar Pradesh (UP) this week, has landed her in the midst of a political controversy involving Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son, UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

The Samajwadi Party leaders are facing flak for actively taking part in this 14-day fest being organized at their hometown Saifai, in Etawah district, while more than 3,500 people continue to live in relief camps set up after the Muzaffarnagar riots three months ago that left more than 63 people dead and over 43,000 homeless in the state.

Terming the acts at the festival as shameful, the BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai said that the SP was engaged in “raag-rang” (fun and frolic) even as riot-affected persons lived in misery. Congress vice-president and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, who recently paid a visit to the camps, criticized the Akhilesh-led state government.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has attacked the UP government for “bulldozing” the relief camps. Congress leader Beni Prasad Verma has also slammed Mulayam Singh for being insensitive towards the plights of riot victims.

Meanwhile, Evelyn’s publicist Dale Bhagwagar has sprung up to her defense. “It’s unfortunate and disturbing that the Bollywood actress is being dragged into a political controversy. Evelyn was just a performer at the event. Nothing more; nothing less!”

“It’s disturbing for her, also because this was the first time she performed on stage in front of an audience of lakhs. It was an exciting moment for her and she never imagined it would land her amidst a controversy with political bigwigs talking about it,” he added.

Sports Management Company Square Off announces the
Square Off Mumbai Swimmathon 2014
on January 5, 2014

Real athletes don’t just run. They Swim

India’s most celebrated swimmer – Virdhawal Khade is Brand Ambassador.

Mumbai, December 30, 2013: Mumbai’s premier swimming event, The Square Off Mumbai Swimmathon (SOMS) 2014 will take place on Sunday, January 5, 2014. Athletes race against each other and the elements in the open sea, swimming a distance of 5 km from Sunk Rock to Gateway of India, in this race organized by sports management firm Square Off in association with Maharashtra State Amateur Aquatic Association (MSAAA) and Indian Sports Academy (ISA).

The Square Off Mumbai Swimmathon is one of the oldest and most established races on the Indian Sea Swimming Calendar. It was launched in December 1947 and over the last 54 years has seen a steady increase in participation. The 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai led to the event being brought to an excruciating halt. With Square Off’s support the contest was once again revived in 2013 and had close to 700 participants, from across India and across categories, in its last edition. This year promises an even better turnout.

Adding another dash of excitement to the event, Virdhawal Khade India’s most accomplished and celebrated swimmer, has been roped in as Brand Ambassador for the Square Off Mumbai Swimmathon 2014. An Arjuna Awardee, Vir holds the distinction of being the youngest Indian to qualify for the Olympics. A prolific national record holder, and definitely the fastest Indian of all time in water, Vir has consistently delighted record keepers with his performances at national and international events especially with his historic wins at the Youth Commonwealth and Asian Games. With Vir’s eyes firmly fixed on the Commonwealth and Asian Games next year and the Olympics the year after, organizers are delighted that the poster boy for Indian swimming has made time to encourage swimmers and promote the sport further.

Says Sachin Girishkumar, COO, Square Off, “As fitness becomes a way of life, an increasing number of people are looking for opportunities for adventure and testing their own limits. Competitions such as these not only provide an opportunity for excellent talent from across the state to be identified, but also an opportunity for those seeking adventure, to experience the thrill of braving and conquering the elements.”

Open Sea Swimming has also now been included in the list of sporting events for the Olympics. Square Off Mumbai Swimmathon 2014, aims to encourage more participants to take up open-sea swimming. With 9 categories of participants including one for differently abled athletes, organisers expect a significant interest in the event.

Adds Ashish Agarwal, CEO, Square Off “At Square Off, we believe that the Indian youth have exceptional talent and potential that can be encouraged by giving them the right platform. Despite being the newest Olympic Sport, this sport has not got due recognition. We are proud to promote Open Sea Swimming in India in association with MSAAA and Swimming Federation of India. It is the newest Olympic sport and given the right attention, we are confident that India can excel at the international level”

Open water swimming poses unique challenges to the swimmers as there are no lane lines, walls or starting blocks to dictate what it takes to win. Unpredictable natural conditions often play a deciding role in determining the winner of such a race.

“We are happy to host this event in association with Square Off, which has deep expertise in conducting events of this nature. Square Off has provided support for this event over the past two years and we are happy that they continue to encourage such events. It is our hope that by facilitating such platforms we can develop more swimming /sporting icons in our country”, Said Mr. Kishore Vaidya, secretary, MSAAA.

To enhance the safety of participants, the organisers have engaged medical and ambulance facilities on site and first aid facilities on accompanying boats. For cases where immediate attention might be needed, they have arranged for the involvement of coast guards with hi-speed Gemini boats, swimming experts to accompany each category, and availability of jet-skis.

The categories for competition are as follows:

Group I Boys / Girls – Between the Ages of 13 to 16

Group II Men / Women – Between the Ages of 17 to 35

Group III Men/ Women – Above the Age of 35

Group IV Handicapped

Special Group V Boys / Girls – Between the Ages of 10 to 12

“Dost Na Sahi…Dushman Hi Bana Liya,” Vivek Mishra laughs at Gauhar Khan’s outrage against him!

The naked yoga guru might have been evicted from the Bigg Boss house within a week after his power packed wild card entry, but the Bigg Boss 7 Contestant has managed to be in the news even after his short term stay at the controversial house, blame his straightforwardness & revealing some of the inside gossips!

In an earlier interview, Vivek Mishra claimed to have witnessed Kushal & Gauhar to have locked themselves in the bathroom during the former’s stay which both Kushal & Gauhar called Vivek’s claim to fame.

This bold & blunt statement made by Vivek Mishra deeply affected Gauhar to an extent that, in one of the interviews post the grand finale she confronted that she holds no grudges for any of the housemates but Vivek Mishra.

Least affected by the harsh comments from the Bigg Boss 7 winner, the quirky & witty Vivek exclaims, “I have never come across anyone as manipulative as Gauhar Khan. She has applied Saam Daam Dand Bhed to win the Bigg Boss title & look… She won. So it would not be wrong to say that she played a clever game. I did state that from the very beginning & still maintain it. Other housemates were of the same opinion but after her victory, I doubt they would make any statements against her.”

Further talking about Gauhar & Kushal’s PDA on national television, Vivek further makes his usual bold statement, “Isn’t it evident? I believe Gauhar & Kushal were smitten by lust mistaken as love. Now they are out let’s just wait & watch till when does that last for all I care!’ chuckles the yoga guru.

Vivek’s entry changed the dynamics of the show completely throwing light on Kushal- Candy Brar story, talking about Armaan Kohli’s live- in girlfriend that did media rounds for quite some time, “ Come to think of it… a lot changed after my entry. But audiences apparently didn’t find me entertaining & got me evicted. Had I been inside the house for much longer…you have no idea what you were about to witness. I have no qualms about such statements. Dost Na Sahi… Dushman hi Bana liya.”

excerpts from stanislas wawrinka’s media briefing today.

love to come back to chennai, nice place to start the year. u cut a little bit of the travel from europe to australia. this tournament is a good combination, not too hot, its humid. its close from australia but not as hot. its a good tournament, crowds are good.
that’s why i’m happy to come back.

feels good. really early in the season to start a tournament, but thats how the schedule is is made. but, i’m ok. i practised yesterday for the first time here. i was in abu dhabi for 3 days before coming here, so i’m ok. i hope to play some doubles before my singles matches. i’m excited to start 2014.

we’ll see. it’s good for tennis to get players like edberg, becker and others to get back in the tour. maybe its the right moment for them. it’s going to be interesting to see good player and good coach combination on the court. its worked well for murray. i’m really happy with my coach. they know how to get there (grand slams), they know how it feels and how to help the player. no, that does not intimidate. the coach doesn’t make the player.

been a really good year. i think, maybe the self confidence that i can beat a top player, i did it few times, some good wins against Tsonga, Berdych … i did it few times against Murray in US Open. Maybe that’s what’s the main thing for me. for sure, i improved my game, my fitness … that was the main thing for me. it starts with the confidence, and then for sure, with the game i was more aggressive against a top guy. its the few little things that make a big change for me, especially in tennis. that’s why my year was so good.

no, my goal is not to break into the top 4. i’m no. 8 now. first time i finished in the top 10. i know that i can still improve, for sure, but i don’t know where i can go. the only thing i can control is how i practice, how i get ready for the tournament, and how i do my schedule. that’s it. i will try to do my best, but i have no idea what’s going to happen.

reasons for bringing on marcus in his team – few things, his experience as a player, as a coach also, his confidence, his opinion on the game. trying to improve my game. at that level you don’t change so much. his idea of the tennis, his vision, for sure, i’m really hpapy to work with him. we’ve had a great year, and i hope we have a great 2014.

on advice to young indian players – its difficult to give advice. when you really young, its important to go out there and play tennis. you need to love it, and don’t play it because you have to.

on winning ACO 2014 in tipsy’s absence – i know that if i play well, i can do well here. but its the first tournament of the year, so you don’t really know what’s going to happen. the first 2 rounds is going to be really important. for sure i know i can win the tournament, but its not easy at all. we have some really tough games in the draw. so i will try to take it match after match and see where i can go.

on mahesh’s league – i don’t know. we’ll see. they are talking about it for a few years, but so far its not happening, so we’ll see.

its not my goal to better in the ranking than roger. i’m sure he’s workign really hard to get back into the top, he’s practising hard to become a top player, i’m sure he’s going to have a better year than last year. he’s a good friend …

Sandip Soparrkar and Shweta Salve’s Sizzling dance performance on Bharat Ki Shaan – Rum Jhum

Doordarshan’s dance reality show Bharat Ki Shaan-Rum Jhum is becoming a very popular show of this season. Episode after episode it is bringing surprises on the dance floor. Its unique concept of Indian dances vs Non Indian dances has caught on with the reality show audience.

On one side, Kathak Guru Sandeep Mahavir brings out the various Indian forms on the floor and on the other hand, Ballroom and Latin King of India Sandip Soparrkar makes his contestants sweat it out by putting world class international dances on the stage of Rum Jhum.

Guru Shreshtra of the show Sonal Mansingh is always speechless with the dynamic performances of the contestants. Full credit goes to Sandip Soparrkar for introducing new dances from various parts of the world each time in each episode. The man really has vast knowledge in this field of dance. Sandeep Mahavir also puts forward different Indian forms, be it folk, classical, semi classical and even Bollywood in exceptional ways.

This week’s episode of Rum Jhum was one of the best when the international dancing sensation Sandip Soparrkar got up and showcased a sexy and sensual salsa with the host of the show Shweta Salve. Shweta who is till date remembered for her perfect moves in Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa Season 1, looked even better dancing with the maestro of Ballroom dance. Sandip and Shweta’s association goes a long way when she was the contestant on Jhalak and Sandip was its technical judge and director.

It is not very often that the dance Maestro gets up and dances with other partners other than his super model wife Jesse Randhawa. To see him on the dance floor sizzling and sharing the chemistry with Shweta Salve was a visual treat. The two fantastic dancers grooved to the music on the sets of Bharat Ki Shaan – Rum Jhum and made the episode a worth watch. We hope with this we get to see more such mesmerizing dances by the Non Indian team Guru Sandip Soparrkar.

Doordarshan’s attempt to bring both Indian and Non Indian dances on the same platform has been very successful, thanks to vision and concept of producer of the show Gajendra Singh of Saai Baba Telefilms.

The three Khans Salman, Aamir and Shahrukh have been ruling the roost for two decades — are still the high ranking guys at the box office, as they appeal to Multiplex as well as single screen audience.

The young guns of Bollywood – Shahid, Ranbir and Imran were trying their hand at the desi films this year.

While the latter two did not manage to cut through this genre, Shahid’s R… Rajkumar has been appreciated and loved by audiences.

R… Rajkumar did very well at the box office, especially with the single screen audience.

Shahid’s never done such an out and out masala film with intense action scenes. So for the audiences it was a refreshing change to see him in this avatar.

While in the songs Shahid looks charming, he has also won accolades for the high energy stunts.

It is not the first time that, Daisy Shah, who is the leading lady of Jai Ho, will be sharing screen space with Salman Khan.

Little do people know but Daisy Shah has worked with Salman Khan before in two of his films. Now the leading lady of Jai ho, had previously worked with Salman as a background dancer.

Daisy Shah was the background dancer for Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor in their films when they starred opposite Salman Khan.

Back then, Daisy Shah had no idea she would get a chance to star opposite Salman himself.

The actress is very thrilled and humbled with the whole life changing experience.

Jai Ho is the first big film to release in the year 2014. It is slated to release on 24th January, which is a non holiday Friday and it is Salman’s release after a gap of about 1.5 years, which is his longest gap.

Director Shekhar Suman at Mulund Festival to Promote ‘Heartless’

The Mulund Festival started by Mr. Charan Singh Sapra (MLA, Mulund) celebrated it’s fifth year this year over a five day fest. It is an initiative to bring together the Mulund Community and give them an opportuinity to showcase their talent.

The hype and hoopla continued at the Mulund festival with Shekhar Suman himself making an appearance on the 4th day at the Dance Competition night.

After engaging the audience with his customary wit and style, Shekhar

Suman, who marks his directorial debut with ‘Heartless, had a special live screening of the trailer in front of the 5000 plus participants.

Heartless has already been creating a buzz and making news for all the right reason after the first theatrical trailer was launched by Mr. Amitabh Bachhan.

The trailer which has already crossed over 5 million views was received just as enthusiastically by the audience at the Mulund Festival.

A nice clean film with an interesting premise is the general buzz around the trailer.

Shekhar confirms that the film is a medical thriller with a strong emotional core.

Shekhar, “Thankfully no cuss words or bawdy item numbers have been strategically placed in the trailer to pique the audience interest and judging by the overwhelming response to the trailer even at the Mulund festival, the makers of ‘Heartless’ have rightfully chosen substance and content over gimmickry and cheap trick to woo the audience.”
