Yet another standing ovation for Shiamak’s SELCOUTH Show

With the who’s who of Mumbai talking about Shiamak’s contemporary dance show SELCOUTH, it gave the audience the social message to think about.

Ninth show of the year and yet another packed audience, this is one show that has the entire city awestruck. Exactly as the name suggests, the show is everything that is rare and unusual in the most marvellous way!

Amongst the packed house that gave Shiamak a standing ovation for his innovative style of choreography was Deepika Padukone. Bollywood’s finest actress who has been a fan of Shiamak’s work watched keenly and easily believed that she has never seen anything like this before. She had director Homi Adajania who was on the edge of his seat throughout seated with his wife Anaita for company as they sat with Shiamak and were all praises. The king of disco in India, Mithun Da also attended the show and like everyone else was spellbound.

Other celebrities who came to watch the show included Director Ritesh Sidhwani, fashion designer Neeta Lulla, Rajniesh Duggal, Kiran Sippy, Loy Mendosa, Atul Kasbekar, Ramona, Aditya Hitkari, Divya Palat, Swaroop Sampat, Manish Goel, Poonam and many more.

To watch the phenomenon called Selcouth by the Guru of Dance, Shiamak Davar were other choreographers including Ganesh Hegde, Ashley Lobo, Pappu- Mallu and television dancers Shakti Mohan and Kuwar Amar.

‘I’ve been doing shows like this for years but have opened them to the public this year. The response is over whelming and this is just the start. Feel extremely humbled by the response and it inspires me and my dance company to give it their all every time.’ said Shiamak. On being asked about the social message he gives through the show, Shiamak went on to say ‘I hate any kind of violence, against animals, women and humanity. But we need to get empowered now, women who are being harassed must speak up. We need to put an end to this.’ Shiamak dedicated this show to his great grand aunt Fearless Nadia and Homi Wadia. ‘I grew up at Basant Studios either watching movies or watching them shoot. They encouraged me to believe in my talent and made me believe that is good to be rare and unusual. They’ve inspired me to be where I am.’ he said.

The show comes back in January as Shiamak’s fans await to watch the splendour of his choreography, the finesse and training of his dance company and his unmatched vision!

SRK braves high fever to attend friend Sachiin ‘Joshi’s Jackpot premiere

“A star is a star because of his relationships, not his stardom. Shah Rukh Khan is the biggest star ever,” says young turk Sachiin Joshi on his friend SRK coming to the premiere of Jackpot though late, and spending over an hour with him to be part of Sachiin’s moment of glory.

“I have asked Sachiin to act in my film, but he wanted to work on his own independent films and I respect that decision,” said Shah Rukh, admitting that since he missed the Jackpot premiere due to ill health, he would like to watch the film at Mannat. “if director Kaizad Gustad is ok with it.” Kaizad was only too delighted to oblige.

The star-studded premiere of Jackpot saw besides Sunny Leone and Sachiin Joshi, actors Sohail Khan, Sameer Ali Khan, Sudhir Mishra, Bunty Walia, Urvashi Sharma Joshi, Sucheta Sharma, Akbar Khan, Murali Sharma, Manasi Rachh, Nasir Khan, Manu Rishi, Maanvi Gagroo, Aditya Singh Rajput, Shabina Khan, Alexandra Gustad, Kanchi Kaul, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Makarand Deshpande among others.
So much was the Jackpot attraction that the normally calm Juhu PVR had crowds standing in queue across all three floors down to the compound to get to the screens.

Sunny’s Jackpot clothes for auction
When Sachiin Joshi made Jackpot, he ensured that the production values were of the highest standard. With Kaizad Gustad helming the stylish venture, ti was inevitable that the outfits were sexy and stylish for Sunny, going with her persona while Sachiin preferred a more earthy, grounded look to go with his character.
With 12 outfits and two copies of each to ensure safety in case of wear and tear, designer Hitesh Kapopra and Bhakti Joshi went in for outfits that fitted Sunny like a second skin.
Says Hitesh, “Sachiin had briefed us not to spare any efforts or expenses. The look should never be compromised. With such instructions, it was inevitable that we would go in for outfits that would set the screen sizzling.”
Interestingly, post Jackpot release, Hitesh is auctioning Sunny;s outfits for charity. “It was very sweet of Sachiin to give us the outfits so that i could auction them. But i wanted to give them for charity as someone deserving could actually get a Jackpot,” reasons Hitesh.

Hollywood actress and human rights activist Mia Farrow also joined the stars in slamming the judgment, saying it was a “very dark day” for freedom and human rights in India.

“I am more disappointed with this judgement. It feels very intolerant and violative of basic human rights. It’s a shame,” superstar Aamir Khan said in a statement.

“True love between same gender individuals cannot be confined to courtrooms. I hope that the law will change in future,” tweeted Bassam Mallick, international super-model and a human rights activist.

Actor John Abraham tweeted: “India has harboured archaic prejudices once again… The Supreme Court has criminalized homosexuality… Shame.”

Filmmaker Onir, who has been vocal about gay rights, said it was a sad day for Indian democracy.

“I am angry by the SC ruling on IPC 377. Very very disappointed that the bench of the Supreme Court hold us to regressive colonial 153-year-old IPC 377. A dark day for the history of judiciary and human rights in India,” Onir said.

The ‘My brother Nikhil’ director added: “A sad day for democracy where the SC bench denies the LGBT community its constitutional rights to equality and protection against discrimination.”

Actor-director Farhan Akhtar tweeted: “The Supreme Court got it wrong today. Sec377.”

Farrow criticised the judgement in a series of tweets.

“Very dark day for freedom and human rights as Indian Supreme Court rules to criminalize homosexuality. Canceled trip to India,” tweeted the star of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and in a sarcastic note added, “My wife and I would not feel welcome there.”

“Well- when I have a wife- we won’t be going to India. Cancelled trip to India. My wife and I would not feel welcome there,” she added.

“Such a decision was totally unexpected from the top court. It is a black day for the community,” Arvind Narayan, a lawyer of the Alternative Law Forum gay rights group, told reporters outside court.

“Love comes from heart, not from the book of laws! I call it Supreme Court’s misjudgment. I am angry, disappointed and hurt!,” tweeted Sourendra Kumar Das, Mumbai-based fashion editor and equal rights activist.

Director Karan Johar tweeted: “Sec377 is not just a violation of human rights but also makes democracy seem like a mirage in our country.

“For all those who think that this judgement gives them a right to talk about their self appointed machoism… GET A LIFE!!!,” Johar added.

Celina Jaitly, another celebrity who has been vocal about her support to LGBT community, said the verdict was a betrayal of trust.

“377 is in contradiction of three major fundamental rights: Article 14, 15, 21. One day you are legal the next day illegal? Naz India joins a shameful list of cases where SC has removed rights given by a lower court… This decision will ruin many lives,” Jaitley said.

‘Rang De Basanti’ star Siddharth tweeted: “We are calling our citizens criminals for doing something that is their fundamental birth right to do & is natural. Mera Bharat kahaan? Sad.”

Riteish Deshmukh called it “Supreme Mis-judgement Section377.”

Actor Rahul Bose: “So much for those believing the judiciary is ‘the last bastion of common sense’ in this country. Section377.”

Actor Anupam Kher wrote: “We obviously don’t believe in equal rights even in the times when we send Mangalyaan to Mars.:)”

Actor Kabir Bedi said the judgement failed to uphold democratic human rights.

“It’s a sad day when the Supreme Court of India does not uphold the democratic rights of sexual minorities. The State should stay out of the bedrooms of consenting adults. SC upholding regressive law seems bigoted.”

Dia Mirza: “I am ashamed. 377 there is nothing more frightening than the revelation that the guardians of democracy have turned undemocratic.”

Anushka Sharma wrote: “So disappointed with the SC verdict. Freedom is such a deceptive term. Rights are an ambiguous mystery scrap377.”

Vinay Pathak tweeted, “Supreme Court – STRAIGHT? or SCARED!”

Director Nikhil Advani tweeted: “Welcome to the medieval ages!!! It was only a matter of time.”

Madhur Bhandarkar wrote: “Just when we thought we are looking into the future, comes a judgement that treats us like we are in the stone age. The disappointment is justified.”

An encounter cop makes his voice heard!

Sufi singer Mudasir Ali left his job as an encounter cop from Srinagar to come to Mumbai to pursue his dream of music, little did he know that he would be a part of an award-winning journey. Mudasir Ali has rendered the vocals for the title song of Girish Malik’s Jal along with stalwart veteran Shubha Mudgal, something that the youngster thinks is a “dream come true.”

Jal boasts of soul-stirring compositions by the dup of tabla maestro Bickram Ghosh and Sonu Nigam. Says Mudasir Ali, “Bickram da heard my voice on the phone and then Sonuji met me. I was very happy they chose me for the song Jal. To render my vocals for the film with such stalwarts is a dream for any singer. Back where we come from, we are used to waking up to the sound of gunshots. And to let our voice be heard is any form is a boon.”

Says Bickram Ghosh, “Mudasir Ali is a wonderfully talented singer with a voice that has an amazing range. He sang the title track and did a fine job, He has a special forte in sufi singing.”

Jal, a entertaining film with a soul, delves into the universal issue of water scarcity and ecological imbalance, weaved into an entertaining tapestry of love, life and human emotions, is the official selection of the recent Busan Film Festival and in the Panorama Selection of International Film festival of India.

Sufi singer Mudasir Ali, was also part of Surkshetra, Bharat Ki Shaan and has lent his vocals to veterans like Monty Sharma, Rajiv-Mona among others. His Indo-Pak album Dil Ki Udaan Sarhad Ke Paar Hai was launched by Mahesh Bhatt recently, where Mudasir Ali co-composed and rendered the vocals along with Pakistani Qawwal Hamza Akram. Mudasir Ali’s soul-stirring sufi renditions are a rage in the north with live shows today.

The team of Yaariyan launch their music with a live concert

Celebrating the success of the music with a formal launch, T-Series ‘Yaariyan had everyone on their feet with a grand live concert at the Mithibai College ground.

The evening turned out to be a splendid success with debutante director Divya Khosla Kumar and producer Bhushan Kumar talking about the film followed by live musical performances by Gen-X sensations and music veterans including Pritam, Honey Singh, Mohammad Irfan, Mithoon, Tulsi Kumar, Benny Dayal, Arko Pravo Mukherjee and Anupam Amod.

Apart from crooning to the hit songs of the contemporary young entertainer, the artists also took to the microphone to sing their signature chart-toppers including songs from ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Aashiqui 2’, ‘Murder 2’ and a special performance by rapper Honey Singh – a medley of ‘Lungi Dance’ from Chennai Express, his hit single ‘Blue Eyes’ and ‘Sunny Sunny’ from ‘Yaariyan’.

City and the people of Mumbai get a local train Map.

IDC, IIT Bombay, December 16, 2013. Students from IDC, IIT Bombay designed a Mumbai Suburban Rail map in their assignment for a course in Visual design and the utility of the map has made it viral on Facebook when it was launched online.

Jaikishan Patel and Snehal Patil, the first year students doing their masters in visual communication, designed the map under the guidance of the their Professor Mandar Rane. I have lived in Mumbai and I know most of things about Mumbai. I felt designing a map would be exciting and of value for people in Mumbai. I researched about it and then understood that though there are a few maps on the internet but none of them is well designed, says Snehal. I like to travel, I have traveled along all the routes for no reason. I am fond of maps. I have Eicher map for all the cities and recently I brought a map for Mumbai, when we decided to work on this project says jaiki (jaikishan).The duo have managed to design a A4 size printable map which covers all the rail routes including the proposed MRTS Metro.Fitting all the content is an A5 size was a challenge, they said.The Map has gone through 25 iterations until it reached its current version. Most of the corrections were crowd-sourced and it was a participatory design process. If the map does not gets installed on stations for any reasons, they are ready with a DIY version of the Map and will create a App so people can always carry the map with them, says their Professor Mandar Rane. The team dreams to see the map installed at all the railway stations as a (YAH) You Are Here Maps. Hope railway authorities are keen on taking it ahead. Recently they launched the Hindi version of the map and planning for a Gujarati version soon.

Says director Kaizad Gustad, “Sunny’s character in Jackpot is very different… it has nothing at all to do with Jism. In Jackpot, Sunny plays a very strong independent woman whose one eye is constantly on the money. She has her own agenda through the movie and we don’t quite know what that is.” Unlike Jism 2, in Jackpot, Kaizad says Sunny emerges on her own with her acting skills. “She is nobody s moll or girlfriend. “

Kaizad feels that the best thing about Sunny is her willingness to work and learn. “Sunny was absolutely fantastic. The best quality about her is the willingness to work hard and learn and that shows on screen. Sunny may not have a lot of experience, but she works hard and is always trying to make it work for everybody.”

So what about Sunny diehards? “All I can say is that with Sunny, there is bound to be glamour. Sunny fans will not be disappointed.”

Farhan Akhtar who plays a musician in Balaji Motion Pictures & Pritish Nandy Communications’ Shaadi Ke Side Effects went all out to get under the skin of his character and personally took interest in the look he sports in the film.

The actor will be seen sporting a tattoo in the film designed by Jayati Bose and particularly didn’t want to look like a stereotypical rocker, for which the team put in extensive research.

After several days of R&D,the makers finally locked in on a customized tattoo that reflects his personality in the shaadi-com This will also be the very first time that Farhan sports a tattoo in any film.

Says Jayati Bose, “Farhan plays a musician in the film and so the tattoo had to reflect and establish his passion for music .After a lot of research we decided to work on a tattoo that merges a musical note with his name in the film.”
