BlackBerry Advances Security of its Multi-Platform Mobility Portfolio with New Cryptography Certification

FIPS 140-2 validation granted for Secure Work Space for iOS and Android

Waterloo, ON – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY; TSX: BB), a world leader in mobile communications, today announced that Secure Work Space for iOS® and Android™, a multi-platform containerization solution managed through BlackBerry® Enterprise Service 10 (BES10), is now Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certified.

Considered a critical benchmark for security in government, FIPS validation assures users that a given encryption technology has passed rigorous testing in order to be used to encrypt and secure sensitive information. The certification will allow security-conscious organizations, including U.S. and Canadian government agencies, to confidently deploy Secure Work Space to securely separate sensitive corporate data from personal content.

“Organizations, in both the public and private sectors, must take the necessary steps to protect sensitive data and ensure that their mobile solutions offer the highest level of security,” said Ben Hoffman, mobility analyst at IDC. “FIPS 140-2 certification indicates that BlackBerry is meeting the strict security requirements that many enterprise customers require.”

The FIPS certification demonstrates BlackBerry’s security capabilities for the transfer of sensitive data on third party devices. With Secure Work Space, BES10 protocols for data-at-rest and data-in-transit are extended to iOS and Android devices, including smartphones and tablets. This means data is protected while traversing networks as well as within the walls of the enterprise. Administrators can configure, secure, wipe and interact within the Secure Work Space on a device, while employees can enjoy the device for personal use. The features make Secure Work Space an ideal solution for organizations that desire the flexibility of a BYOD program with the control they require for mobile communications.

“BlackBerry is considered the most trusted and secure mobile platform and we continue to provide customers with choice and flexibility without compromising security,” said Scott Totzke, Senior Vice President, Security Group at BlackBerry. “The FIPS 140-2 validation for Secure Work Space for iOS and Android demonstrates the multi-platform security capabilities that BlackBerry delivers for customers, helping governments and enterprises alike to deploy third-party devices with more confidence and less risk.”

FIPS 140-2 is issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to coordinate the requirements and standards for certifying cryptographic modules. The standard was developed through the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP), which certifies products for use by U.S. government agencies and regulated industries that collect, store, transfer, share and disseminate sensitive information. Product certifications under the CMVP are performed in accordance with the requirements of FIPS 140-2. In addition to U.S. government recognition, the certification is accepted and supported by the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) for government use.

BlackBerry products and solutions are protected by best-in-class AES 256-bit encryption, a highly secure, internationally recognized data protection standard. In addition to FIPS certification, BlackBerry products have continuously passed rigorous security assessments from a variety of independent organizations around the world. For example, BlackBerry 10 smartphones approved by NATO for use in classified communications up to the level of “Restricted.” Additionally, BlackBerry was the first MDM vendor to achieve “Authority to Operate” on the U.S. Department of Defense’s secure networks.

Press Release: Gemfields and Project Nanhi Kali Welcome the Support of  Bollywood Actress Chritrangda Singh to Launch Project Blossoming

Mumbai — 26th March 2014
Gemfields is proud to announce the launch of Project Blossoming — a creative and philanthropic partnership with ten of India’s leading jewellers in support of Project Nanhi Kali and the cause of girl child education.

Chosen from across India, these talented jewellers have created one-of-a-kind pieces set with Gemfields’ Zambian emeralds and Mozambican rubies and inspired by the notion of blossoming.  The Project Blossoming collection will tour India, visiting each of the designers’ boutiques, before returning to Mumbai on 6 June, where the collection will be auctioned by Christie’s at an exclusive black-tie event. The proceeds raised from the sale will go directly to this very honourable cause, which aims to raise enough money to support a minimum of 2,000 girls.

Project Blossoming is delighted to have the support of Bollywood actress Chitrangda Singh, who was not only eager to be the global ambassador for the project, but hopes to use her power and influence to raise awareness both at home and abroad for a cause which is close to her heart. “As a public figure, I am very aware of my responsibility to young girls and through the sale of these extraordinary pieces of jewellery I hope that we can make a real difference to the lives of many.”  The exclsusive interview can be found on the Project Blossoming website.

As the founding partner of Project Blossoming, Gemfields is deeply committed to the long-term aims of Project Nanhi Kali and the education of the girl child. As a company we know that the benefits of quality education are invaluable and so over the years the Company has supported a number of sustainable educational projects in both Zambia and Mozambique.

“India and coloured gemstones have a rich and powerful history and as such India has played an important part of Gemfields’ success as a business,” says Ian Harebottle, Gemfields’ Chief Executive Officer. “We feel that it is only fair to give back to a country that has been so hospitable to us.  With the funds raised through the sale of these colourful jewellery creations we can have a huge impact on the lives of thousands of young girls all over India.”

The work of Project Nanhi Kali knows no bounds. Since its inception in 1996 the K.C Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation, which together implement Project Nanhi Kali, have worked tirelessly — reaching out to over 90,000 young, underprivileged girls across nine states in India.

“The English translation of Nanhi Kali is a ‘little bud’ — the concept of which has been beautifully incorporated into Project Blossoming,” says Sheetal Mehta, Trustee and Executive Director, K.C Mahindra Education Trust. “I am truly grateful to Gemfields for partnering with Project Nanhi Kali and committing to support at least 2000 girls, bringing us a step closer to our vision of reaching out to 100,000 girls.

The Facts
Government of India statistics reveal that only 3 out of 10 girls who enter class 1 complete class 10. While enrolment rates of girls are improving marginally, dropout levels remain alarmingly high. At primary school level over 45% of girls dropout of school, which increases to over 73% by the time the child has reached class 10. Research has shown that reasons for this dropout may be as minor as the girl child not being able to afford a school dress/uniform to go to school and could also include more complex factors like girls taking on the responsibility of household chores at a very young age as a result of gender stereotyping. Successful education of the girl child has been repeatedly acknowledged as an effective mechanism to break this inter-generational cycle of poverty, social norms, myths and social evils.

About Project Nanhi Kali
Project Nanhi Kali was established in 1996 with the aim of providing quality education to underprivileged girls in India. Today jointly managed by the K.C Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation, the project is reaching out to over 90,000 girls across 9 states in India covering some of the most deprived, remote, and difficult regions of the country.  The project ensures underprivileged girls get access to quality education by providing academic support, material support and social support that also involves counselling parents and the community on the importance of issues related to girl child education and gender equality. In this way enabling the child to attend school with dignity and reducing the chances of her dropping out. www.nanhikali.org

Designer Randell Gomes in association with an event company has announced a beauty pageant Mr & Miss Fashionable India to promote the concept of comfortable, affordable and wearable fashion, which will be announced at a later date. When I was a student at St Xaviers college, we would visit Fashion Street to buy bermudas, shorts and T -shirts which were available for as little as Rs 30 per piece. It was simply fabulous. Most of the stuff available at Fashion Street were export rejects and some of them were re-cycled clothes. But the joy we experienced getting an outfit within our limited budget was tremendous. At that time, shopping was fun and a great pleasure. With my new range of pret outfits for men and women, I want to make cheap fashionable clothes available for everyone.

Nobody is too young for a knee replacement

Life is in motion and when that motion gets restricted or maligned, joint replacement surgeries come to your rescue. Over the years with improvement in technology, joint implants have become more durable and longer lasting… This has encouraged even younger patients in need to opt for joint replacements

So, what exactly leads to a joint replacement surgery? Developmental disorders, injury caused by accidents and the condition of osteoarthritis with unstable pressure on joints could make you one of the million applicants opting for joint replacements in India itself. Though there are many reasons, one of the most common is the condition of arthritis common in middle-aged people.

“Though affecting the elderly mostly, joint replacements are often also necessitated among the young. Sometimes, due to an accident or injury and sometimes due to early onset of arthritis. Recently we conducted a hip replacement surgery on a 17 year old girl who needed it due to birth defect. Sedentary lifestyles put together with very less physical activity are also putting youngsters in danger of acquiring joint related ailments at a younger age,” says Dr. Rajeev K. Sharma, Senior Consultant Orthopedics, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi throws light on what’s hot in the joint replacements sphere and how it is cashing on a long-term durability.

However, the technology and science of joint replacements has progressed by leaps and bounds over the years.

A couple of decades back the biggest challenge was to have long-lasting replacements and implants a reality for patients. Even if a knee replacement was conducted successfully, chances were the implant would last up to a decade and the patient would need another replacement surgery after that.

Today we have come a long way in actualizing that aim of providing durable joint implants with as long as 30 years of life. This has come as a boon for patients, many of whom would not need another surgery after having one in their lifetime.

Significant advances in the field of orthopedic surgery and in medicine in general have taken place over the last three decades and today a range of difficult situations can be treated successfully. It is well established that these implants are safe even for very older patients. Patients as old as 96 years of age are also treated successfully.

“For hips, we now have cement-less hip implants with delta motion ceramic and for knees we have high mobile bearing implants. In both these cases, the patient can enjoy nearly normal functions, can move around in the markets, sit down and can feel as normal as any other person. Then, these have a longevity advantage too. The impact goes on for a very long time and a patient does not require any second surgery in a short span.

“Yet, there remains a prevalent myth that knee replacements are strictly for the elderly. Some patients in their 50s who are experiencing serious motion problems due to diseased knee joints are hesitant to go for the procedure as they wonder whether they are too young for a knee replacement. Some sportspersons who suffer from injuries may also need knee replacement surgeries at a younger age. But, we advise such patients that joint replacement radically improves quality of life, gives you back your mobility and enables you to return to normal life,” adds Dr Sharma.

At the same time when everything in this bubble looks bright and great, there are some challenges yet to meet ends. Now, that these surgeries last for a good-enough time with no need for re-surgery in between, the biggest challenge is to gift patients a pain-free post surgery time. Wherein a patient not only gets back in motion as normally as possible but also does not feel any amount of pain once the surgery/implant is done.

So, as far as the possibility of joint, specifically knee replacements look promising for Indian patients. At the same time, joint replacement surgeons in India as well as the entire medical industry here today is well equipped to offer the best of treatments to foreign patients with an equally competitive and comfortable approach as they get in Boston or Harvard.

Recently, Daya and Abhijeet visited the chwals of Parel to shoot for an upcoming episode which required them to be dressed as gundas. The premise required Daya to be beaten by the villain. A little birdie from the sets informed that, during the shoot around 500 odd people had gathered to witness the sequence. Suddenly, in between the shot few children made their way through the crowd and charged towards the villain and started arguing with him. Unaware of the shoot in progress, these little fans of Daya thought their hero was getting beaten up in real and came forward to help him. After some convincing by the crew they understood the situation and were happy to know that their favourite hero is safe.
