Self regulation best option for TV ratings: I&B Ministry

Mumbai, 12 March 2014: The government has recently notified TRP guidelines that cover a detailed procedure for registration of rating agencies, eligibility norms, terms and conditions of registration, cross holdings, methodology for audience measurement, complaint redressal mechanisms, sale and use of the audit, disclosure, reporting requirements and action against non compliance. This was disclosed by Mr Bimal Julka, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, at the opening of the 15th FICCI FRAMES Conference here today.

FRAMES is a three day global convention organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). It covers the entire gamut of media and entertainment like films, broadcast, digital entertainment, animation, gaming, and visual effects. About 200 Indian and overseas speakers will address nearly 2000 Indian and 800 foreign delegates from the media and entertainment industry. This year marks the 15th anniversary of FICCI FRAMES and assumes importance since it comes just before the general elections.

In his opening remarks, Mr Uday Shankar, Chairman, FICCI Media and Entertainment Committee and CEO, Star India, complimented the FICCI team for putting up such a spectacular show. He expressed happiness that the media had recorded a growth of 12 percent last year, amidst an environment of gloom and doom. That is a testimony to the tenacity of the media, he said.

Mr Shankar also described media and entertainment as key to the inspiration of one billion Indians, and hence felt that an event like this was extremely important, especially since it took place at a time leading to the elections. The industry had run through its course of exploiting the first set of economic reforms in 1991. It now faces a complex set of economic and social choices, including the role of the government and private sector. He was of the view that no relationship is more important than that between the government and the media, since they are conditioned to be adversarial. Hence these weeks before the elections call for a rethink of their respective roles.

“We are of the firm view that self regulation by the industry is the best option as far as TV ratings are concerned,” said Mr Bimal Julka. Delivering the vision statement at the inaugural session, he announced that the Indian Broadcasting Foundation had set up a Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC)) High Table and was going ahead with appointing a rating agency. He urged BARC to speed up the process so that ratings may be generated without delay. He described the issue of TRPs as critical for the broadcasting sector and said it had been under discussion for the last few months.

Regarding FM radio, Mr Julka said that the ministry’s policies had ensured vibrant growth in the sector, with 245 FM channels launched in 86 cities since 2005. The third phase of FM auction for 839 channels is currently underway. He also discussed the challenges facing the sector, including complete digitisation throughout the country, rationalisation of taxes, control of vertical monopoly and cross holdings and content monitoring. Mr Julka also announced that the National Museum of Indian Cinema in Mumbai is ready for inauguration and the first phase will be dedicated to the nation very shortly.

Mr Ajit Pai, Commissioner, FCC, USA, was the guest of honour at the event. He began on a personal note, describing how his parents migrated to the US in 1971 and taught him the value of hard work and sacrifice. As a child growing up in the US, he found it difficult to communicate with his grandparents back home because there were no phones, no email and no YouTube. Today’s world is unrecognisable from those days, he observed. Thanks to technology, families that are separated geographically feel a lot closer today than they did in the ‘70s.

Mr Pai was clearly of the view that regulators must not impose their preferences on others. It was the role of the marketplace to sort success from failure. Describing the phenomenal progress made by the entertainment and media industry in America, he said that this progress happened not by government fiats, but because the private sector took risks to innovate, spending over one trillion dollars on upgrading and deploying core broadcast infrastructure. The US Government created the regulatory framework for the industry to take these risks. That is the story behind their success.

FICCI Frames always has a partner country and a partner state. This year, the partner country is Australia, and the partner state Karnataka. Mr Patrick Suckling, Australian High Commissioner to India, delivered the Partner Country Keynote Address. He felt that Australia’s film credentials are not as well recognised in India as they should be. His country has won about 50 Oscars, out of which three have been this year. The industry is adept in both front and back end cinema quality. There are four major production houses, with modern infrastructure, technological expertise, and post production, animation and music facilities. Australia is famous for its locations, and he called upon Bollywood producers to consider shooting in Australia. He also announce that Australia’s interests go beyond film making to education, and can make a good contribution to Indian film institutes. However, there still remain areas of mistrust and lack of understanding between the two countries, and these must be addressed through interaction.

Karnataka, the partner state, was represented by Mr Srivatsa Krishna, Secretary, Department of IT, BT & ST, Government of Karnataka. In a dramatic multimedia presentation, he showcased the state-of-the-art facilities available in Karnataka, and revealed that many famous Hollywood film sets were actually created at Whitefield in Bengaluru. He invited Indian and international film makers to take advantage of the facilities offered by his state.

Mr Harshvardhan Neotia, Vice President, FICCI, welcomed the gathering to the three-day event and Mr Ramesh Sippi, Co-Chairman, FICCI Media and Entertainment Committee, delivered the vote of thanks. The session also saw the release of the FICCI-KPMG Report and the FICCI Amarchand Lawbook. The entire session was anchored by Dr A Didar Singh, Secretary General, FICCI.

The Cathay Pacific Group today announced an attributable profit of HK$2,620 million for 2013. This compares to a profit of HK$862 million (restated) in the previous year. Earnings per share were HK66.6 cents compared to earnings per share of HK21.9 cents (restated) in 2012. Turnover for the year increased by 1.1% to HK$100,484 million.

The improvement in the Group’s performance in 2013 was largely due to the strengthening of its passenger business and the positive impact of measures introduced in 2012 to protect the business from the high price of jet fuel. The cargo business continued to be affected by strong competition and weak demand, though there was some seasonal improvement in the last quarter of 2013. The business overall continued to be affected by the sustained high price of jet fuel. The share of profits from non-airline subsidiaries and from associates decreased to HK$781 million from HK$1,126 million (restated).

Passenger revenue in 2013 increased by 2.4% to HK$71,826 million. Capacity decreased by 1.8% due to the continuation of 2012’s reduction in long-haul frequencies and the accelerated retirement of Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft. However, capacity began to increase towards the end of the year as frequencies were restored and new routes were introduced. The load factor increased by 2.1 percentage points to 82.2%, while yield improved by 1.8% to HK68.5 cents. Passenger demand was strong on long-haul routes in all classes of travel. However, demand on regional routes did not match the increase in capacity on these routes, which left yield under pressure.

The Group’s cargo business has been adversely affected by weak demand since April 2011. There was some recovery in business during the last three months of 2013, though business was still weaker than the same period of 2012. The Group’s cargo revenue in 2013 was HK$23,663 million, a decline of 3.6% compared to the previous year. Yield for Cathay Pacific and Dragonair decreased by 4.1% to HK$2.32. Capacity increased by 1.7% but the load factor fell by 2.4 percentage points to 61.8%. Capacity was adjusted in line with demand throughout 2013 and more cargo was carried in the bellies of passenger aircraft in order to reduce costs. The airline’s new cargo terminal at Hong Kong International Airport became fully operational in October 2013 and will allow us to improve efficiency and to reduce costs in the long term.

The price of jet fuel remains a concern for Cathay Pacific and the industry as a whole. Fuel remains the Group’s most significant cost, accounting for 39.0% of total operating costs in 2013. In April 2013 the airline took advantage of a brief drop in fuel prices to extend its fuel hedging into 2016. The Group’s fuel costs in 2013 (disregarding the effect of fuel hedging) decreased by 4.6% compared to 2012. This was largely a result of the introduction, in 2012, of measures including changing schedules, reducing capacity, withdrawing older, less fuel-efficient aircraft from service and taking delivery of new, more fuel-efficient aircraft.

In 2013 Cathay Pacific continued to upgrade its fleet, taken delivery of 19 new aircraft: five Airbus A330-300 aircraft (including one for Dragonair), nine Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and five Boeing 747-8F freighters. Five Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft were retired during the period. In March 2013, the airline entered into agreements in relation to the cargo fleet as part of a package of transactions involving The Boeing Company, Cathay Pacific, Air China Cargo and Air China that included the purchase of three Boeing 747-8F freighters (which were delivered in December 2013), cancelled orders for eight Boeing 777-200F freighters, acquired options to purchase five Boeing 777-200F freighters and agreed to sell four Boeing 747-400BCF converted freighters. Also in December 2013, the airline announced an order for 21 new Boeing 777-9X aircraft (for delivery after 2020), three new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and one new Boeing 747-8F freighter, and to sell six existing Boeing 747-400F freighters. As at 31st December 2013 the Group had a total of 95 aircraft on firm order for delivery by 2024. Cathay Pacific and Dragonair are to take delivery of 16 new aircraft in 2014, one of which was delivered in January 2014.

The Group continued to develop its networks in 2013. It fully restored the long-haul passenger frequencies to Los Angeles, Toronto and New York that were cancelled in 2012. A fifth daily frequency was added to the London route in June and a four-times-weekly service to Male in the Maldives was introduced in October. Cathay Pacific launched a daily service to Newark in the United States in March 2014, will launch a daily service to Doha in late March 2014 and will add more flights to Los Angeles and Chicago from the summer 2014. The airline introduced freighter services to Guadalajara in October 2013 and extended this service to Mexico City in March 2014 and will add a freighter service to Columbus in the United States in late March 2014. Dragonair launched flights to Da Nang, Siem Reap, Wenzhou, Yangon and Zhengzhou in 2013 and will begin a two-times-weekly service to Denpasar, Bali in Indonesia in April 2014.

On the product side, premium economy class was available on 85 long-haul and medium-haul Cathay Pacific aircraft by the end of 2013, while the installation of new regional business class seats will be completed by the third quarter of 2014. Other projects include the introduction of the restyled and upgraded first class cabins on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and the installation of new business class and economy class seats in Dragonair’s aircraft. The renovated first class lounge at The Wing reopened in February and the airline opened The Bridge, its fifth departure lounge at Hong Kong International Airport, in October 2013.

The share of profits from non-airline subsidiaries and from associates decreased by 30.6% to HK$781 million. This mainly reflects the start up costs of Cathay Pacific’s new cargo terminal, which became fully operational in October 2013, after a phased opening which began in February 2013. The results also continued to be affected by the performance of Air China Cargo, the airline’s cargo joint venture with Air China. The financial performance of the new cargo terminal in 2014 will benefit from the absence of start up costs. Air China Cargo’s financial performance in 2014 will benefit from the steps taken to improve its profitability referred to below.

The Group continued to develop its strategic partnership with Air China. Steps taken to improve the financial performance of Air China Cargo included the purchase of fuel-efficient Boeing 777-200F freighters. A new ground-handling company, Shanghai International Airport Services Co., Limited, began operations in February 2013. This joint venture between Cathay Pacific, Air China, Shanghai Airport Authority and Shanghai International Airport Co. Ltd. provides ground-handling services at Shanghai’s two international airports, Hongqiao and Pudong.

Cathay Pacific Chairman Christopher Pratt said: “The operating environment remained challenging throughout 2013, for the Group and the aviation industry as a whole. It was encouraging to see an improvement in our overall performance, and the strength of the passenger business reflects our continuing investment in network development and providing superior service and world-beating products. The cargo business continues to be problematic. There is still no sign of any sustained improvement in the market and some changes in the business appear now to be structural rather than cyclical. We thus have reduced the size of our freighter fleet and at the same time increased its efficiency.

“We remain confident in Hong Kong’s future as an air cargo centre and believe that our reshaped freighter fleet and our new cargo terminal will allow us to compete successfully in the long term. The business outlook for 2014 looks to be improved when compared to 2013. We will continue to invest to make our business stronger while keeping our financial position strong. As always, we remain committed to strengthening the world class aviation hub in our home, Hong Kong.”

Amitabh Bachchan’s voice to be used in Arasari Maa Ambe

Bollywood’s most celebrated star Amitabh Bachchan will lend his voice for Arasari Maa Ambe. Directed by Shiv Sagar, the short film is based on the myths surrounding the Ambaji Temple. It is shot in 3D to add to the ambience of the story.

According to the sources, Amitabh has also proved his prowess as a 3rd person narrator for many movies in the past. His earthly mundane voice entrances the audience and keep them hooked. So, what convinced him to be a part of this periodic drama? It so happens that Jaya Bachchan and Prem Sagar, Shiv’s father studied at FTI, Pune. Both the families go back a long way and have still remained good friends.

This is Shiv Sagar’s directorial debut. He has been a part of many famous television shows like Jai Jai Jai Jai Bajarang Bali and Mahima Shani Devi Ki. He was very elated when offered to direct it. He readily accepted. TV actors like Tej Sapru, Tarun Khanna and Piyali Munshi who are a part of the film, have already worked with Shiv in other ventures and were happy to work with him again.

Spider-Man’s Classmate To Make Her Bollywood Debut Soon!

It’s not everyday that an actor gets to attend acting workshops with Hollywood stars but international actress Ridhima Sud was lucky to have done it on a daily basis during an acting intensive in Los Angeles.

This talented actress, who is gearing up to make her Bollywood debut, had none other than ‘Spider-Man’ actor Tobey Maguire as her classmate while at Larry Moss’s studio – he is incidentally known as Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting coach.

Talking about her plans, Ridhima, who has been the face of beauty brands such as Pond’s and Kaya Skin and shot campaigns for Vodafone, Coca Cola, Titan E bay among others says, “Indian film-making is at a tipping point in its cinematic history which makes it an exciting time to be a part of the industry . Some of the work being produced and characters being written are edgy, exciting and challenging. ”

Ridhima has already landed a film deal with a reputed production house but is tight-lipped about the details. “I cannot talk about the project as of now, but I love the films they make and will certainly share details when the time is right.”

– She has acted in “Ballad of Rustom”, which has been nominated to the Oscars

– Has acted in the film”Kajarya” (The film has been featured in the Forbes top 5 films to watch in 2014 along with Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet)

– She acted in the Dubai segment of “The Owner” that made it to the Guiness book of records for being a film that has been directed by 25 film makers.

The girl-on-girl kiss is the most attractive trope of the quintessential HORREX (horror and sex) genre.

In RAGINI MMS-2, the stage is set for a face-off…..errr…. kiss-off, when Sandhya Mridul’s character (Monali) is egged on by Rocks (Parvin Dabas) for some girl-on-girl action.

This explains the sensuous kiss between Sunny Leone and Sandhya Mridul in the film. We’re told that both were extremely comfortable and professional about paying ‘lip service’!

RAGINI MMS-2 releases on March 21.

Hard Kaur & Sunidhi Chauhan bonded at a recent event

Yes you heard it right our music world’s top two singers, Hard Kaur and Sunidhi Chauhan, enjoyed each other’s company and had a blast at a recent award ceremony in Mumbai. Their appeared to be very friendly on and at back stage. But can two singers could ever be friends? ‘Yes, Why not? Two singers can really be friends,’ Hard Kaur clarified.

‘Two actresses can never be friends,’ so goes the age-old taboo that prevailed in Bollywood. It is said that two contemporary leading ladies will never be able to get along. But, guess these two leading ladies have proved this myth wrong, or are they singers that why it’s a kind of exception; whatever the reason might be but these lovely singers have always done things out of the box and they both are famous national and international platforms. Hard Kaur and Sunidhi held high regards for each other. Hard Kaur said, ‘Sunidhi as a person is as good as her voice. We talk a lot whenever we meet and have fun.’

Shahrukh, the star goat of ‘Yeh Hai Bakrapur’, gets a personal Spot boy

Mumbai, 11th March, 2014: The star of Yeh Hai Bakrapur, Shahrukh the goat, gave the entire cast and crew a tough time with his tantrums and even had a personal spotboy tending to him.

The star goat, who was pampered throughout the shoot of the film, had his way in almost everything, even when facing the camera. During shoots, when the camera wasn’t rolling, Shahrukh would face the camera and would be at his best. But as soon as the director screamed ‘Action’, Shahrukh would look away and start throwing tantrums. The goat would look everywhere but at the camera and would often start running around, giving the cast and crew a tough time.

The most coddled star at the sets, Shahrukh even had someone carrying an umbrella at all times for him. Serving him food at regular intervals, that person would be there for Shahrukh, at his beck and call. No one else, among the entire cast and crew, had a spot boy or an assistant to spoil them the way Shahrukh, the film’s celebrity goat was.

Yeh hai Bakrapur is a social satire, set in a village and is all set to be a rollercoaster ride for the viewers as it takes them through a rib-tickling journey of twists and turns and promises to be a treat for lovers of good cinema and comedy. Written and directed by Janaki Vishwanathan and produced by Ramesh S Arunachalam, Yeh Hai Bakrapur is slated to release on 25th April.
