Mumbai’s Leading Transplant Hospital Completes 50 Transplants Within its First Year

~300 kidney transplants an annual number for all of Mumbai, of which Global Hospitals, Mumbai does 50~

Mumbai, 7th August 2014: Global Hospitals Mumbai has successfully completed 50 kidney transplants within the first year of functioning of the hospital.  Part of the Global Hospitals group, India’s fourth largest healthcare chain, the milestone is seen as exemplary, given it constitutes one-sixth of the entire number of kidney transplants done in Mumbai annually.

From a nine year old with urological complexities who received a kidney from his mother, to a son who donated to his father, to a rickshaw driver who has recently gone back to his profession – all have benefited from the drive that Global Hospitals has shown in order to ensure that the demand for the close-to-10,000 kidney transplants per year only in Mumbai, does not go unheeded.

Expressing his happiness on this remarkable achievementMr. Manpreet Sohal, CEO, Global Hospitals, Mumbai said, “At Global Hospitals we are on a continuous quest to bring to our patients the finest treatment and technology. Completing 50 transplants within a year of starting our kidney transplant services has been a remarkable achievement, and we look to carry this forward in the years to come. Having operated on multiple complicated cases that many others would think twice before accepting, Global Hospitals is now geared to provide these services to others in need”

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Bharat Shah, Director, Renal Sciences, Global Hospitals, Mumbai said “Diabetes and high blood pressure are leading causes of kidney failure. If proper care is taken by those with diabetes and high blood pressure, many kidney failures can be prevented. Unfortunately this awareness is lacking and incidence of kidney failure is increasing in our country. Treatment for kidney failure is life-long dialysis or kidney transplant. Dialysis is a partial treatment and it is very expensive in the long run. Transplant is a far better treatment. However, < 5% of patients developing kidney failure can go through transplant due to medical, social and financial reasons. We at Global hospital with excellent infrastructure are able to provide the most advanced treatment to all types of cases. Because of excellent infrastructure and our team effort, we have been able to treat complicated cases refused at other centers”.

Speaking on the technical aspect of the surgeries Dr. Pradeep Rao, Urologist, Global Hospitals, Mumbai said that “Laparoscopic donor Nephrectomy has been accepted as gold standard all over the world and we are proud to offer this to every patient who comes to us”.

According to Narmada Kidney Foundation, a leading NGO creating awareness about kidney, each year approximately 3 to 4 lakh people develop kidney failure in our country. Only 1-2% are lucky enough to transplants. With numbers as abysmal in India, these numbers and transplants bring a lot of hope to those suffering from end-stage renal issues.
