Mary Kom is an exceptional film that brings to life the journey of one of the most inspiring female athletes in the world. Portrayed pitch perfect by Priyanka, the screen is bristling with the fierce passion of this champion boxer. Our dream was to take this tale from Manipur to the whole of India and the world. Further with a premiere at Toronto film festival on eve of worldwide release, later at Busan this will also travel wide to discerning global audience of Indian Cinema.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

On Mary Kom :  Not many films and biopics have been based on the life of living people so this was a huge cinematic experiment but something we were extremely passionate to bring on screen as Mary’s story was something that touched my heart .

On Priyanka Chopra : If Hollywood has Hilary Swank, we have Priyanka Chopra. Her passion, her fire, the intensity with which she works and acts just makes her sparkle.

On Omung Kumar : Very few know that when Omung and I decided to work on this project together it was a very simple story…He approached me outside an elevator and it took me a minute to say yes. It was that simple moment of intuition that has today resulted into this magnum opus.

 Director’s note –

Omung Kumar

I started this film three and half years back before any film on sports (biopic films) was made. We had started researching on Mary Kom. We had spoken to her three and half years back about this project. Then I approached Sanjay Leela Bhansali (producer) and Priyanka Chopra and things fell in place.

It wasn’t so difficult to replicate Mary’s life as she was an open book. We’ve picked a lot of incidents that have happened in Mary’s life. we’ve tried to consolidate 12 years of her life into 2 hours of celluloid magic.

On Viacom18 Motion Pictures

Viacom18 Motion Pictures has done full justice to a film like Mary Kom, they are experts in this field and I’m so happy that they are producing this film with sanjay Leela Bhansali. They are leaving no stone unturned. Great marketing skills and strategy is helping our film to reach out to everyone.

On Sanjay Leela Bhansali

It was great working with sanjay Leela Bhansali, we have known each other for years now, I have learnt so much from him while working on black and sawariya. His invaluable guidance shaped the film.  He is  a great mentor to have on your side and I’m so lucky to have him as a producer.

Mary Kom is one of the toughest films of my career. Given that it is based on the life of a living legend, I had to do everything in my power to make it happen. The most difficult part was to weave between the various facets of Mary’s life… boxer, mother, daughter, wife, homemaker, fighter and above all else the woman herself.  My proudest moment so far has been Mary and Onler’s reaction to the film.

On Omung Kumar

Omung as a director was a revelation to me.  I’ve known him for many years now but in a completely different capacity.  Mary Kom the film has been in his blood stream for years now.  We’ve had a rollercoaster ride on this film… we’ve fought, punched, laughed, cried and everything else but most of all we both worked very hard to make this come alive. It hasn’t been easy for him, but he’s pulled through it with flying colors.

On Sanjay Leela Bhansali

It’s difficult to put in words the genius that is Sanjay Leela Bhansali.  He is a creative, emotional visionary that is sometimes misunderstood.  Yet his passion his vision for cinema is unparalleled.  I will be eternally grateful for the time he has spent with the me and the team of Mary Kom during the making of the film.

I don’t think anybody could have done the role as well as Priyanka. Priyanka is the best actress to play me. Acting anybody can do, but boxing will be different as one needs a certain type of body structure. Priyanka suits that. Her body is very structured, like that of a boxer. I think Omung and Sanjay Leela Bhansali made the perfect choice. I really believed she can do it. ! Everything has been done so realistically and Priyanka has performed so well. It’s like seeing my life’s story in front me. It’s surreal.
