Rekha Rana: Veena Malik is a fraud

Actress Rekha Rana accuses Veena Malik of forging documents for Indian Visa

Theater artiste and actor Rekha Rana who recently replaced item girl Shakshi Pradhan in the film The Underground, directed by Hemant Nilam Das has lashed out at Pakistani item girl Veena Malik, saying that she obtained fake “invitation letters” from Indian producers and production houses to enable her to continue working in India in 2011.

Says Rekha Rana whose debut movie Ab Hoga Dharna Unlimited released on 13 April this year, “In November-December 2011, Veena Malik was shooting for Hemant Madhukar’s film Mumbai 125 km. However, she has obtained “invitation work letters” from director and producer Hemant Nilam Das of Innovation Next Media – a Mumbai-based production house to enable her to get her visa extended and to work in India.” This statement was confirmed by this journalist in a tape-recorded interview with producer Hemant Nilam Das who has backed up Rekha Rana’s claims.

Says Hemant Nilam Das, “For about two months during October and November 2012, Pratik (Veena Malik’s manager) took about 2-3 invitation letters from my two production houses on the grounds that Veena Malik needs to extend her Visa. As I had signed Veena Malik for one of my projects, I issued those letters. However, subsequently we dropped her from the film because of her unprofessional attitude and the fact that she kept getting into one controversy or the other without informing us. My films are of a serious nature and the nude FHM cover shoot was the icing on the cake. Then she was involved in some disappearing or kidnapping controversy. She would release news items to the media without informing us and we would have to face a lot of inconvenience with our financiers and others. We hence decided to drop Veena Malik from our projects,” said Das, backing Rekha Rana’s claims.

Rekha Rana is the winner of the Miss Delhi Photogenic Face 2007. She was born in New Delhi and studied at High School Green Fields, New Delhi. After her education, her passion for acting got her to sign up with the Barry John Acting School.

Rekha Rana bagged the best actress award for her performance in a short film called Take Care at the Rangs Singapore Film Festival, 2010. She has worked as a theater artiste having performed in plays like Dinesh Thakur’s Jis Lahore Nahi Dekhiya Oh Jameya Nahi. She will be seen in the Hindi and Tamil versions of I hate Valentine’s Day, directed by Hemant Nilim Das. She has also shot for Tara – Ek Banjaran.

Further, Veena Malik’s visa was city specific, yet she was travelling all over India which is very surprising, claims Rekha Rana adding that “one fine day we discovered that she was shooting for Madhukar’s Mumbai 125 when she was actually supposed to work for Das’ film. We wonder if she misrepresented to the Indian Visa authorities as to whom she was working for. Her manager had several invitation work letters issued to her from various production houses to back up her legitimate claim of having work in India. Most of these projects never even materialized. Veena Malik has tried every trick in the book to manipulate the legal system in India. She got letters and documents prepared from Indian production houses which were technically speaking incorrect and invalid. What has happened to her so-called legal notice to FHM magazine? Why has she not pursued it? If her photos were misused by the magazine, she should have gone to court. Why is she quiet on the issue now, asks Rekha Rana?”

The Indian Artistes and Actors Forum (IAAF) which had initially complained to the Government of India regarding the validity of Veena Malik’s Indian visa has now taken up the matter once again with the External Affairs Ministry. “We demand a thorough investigation into Veena Malik’s ‘illegal activities and manipulation’ in India, ” said a spokesperson for the IAAF.

They did well at that time… the last two years saw the return of blockbuster mainstream cinemas like `Dabangg` and `Wanted`-But now I see something change after films like `Kahaani`, `Paan Singh Tomar`, and `Vicky Donor`. So it’s a cycle and I feel the wheels have turned, hopefully. So maybe now it`s the right time,”

The out and out comedy is already a subject of heated discussion overseas, having traveled to several international festivals including South Asian Film Festival in New York,Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, Shanghai International Film Festival, and was also chosen as arecipient of the prestigious Golden Palm Award at the 2010 Mexico International Film Festival.

Will Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi engage in ‘Sher wars’?

Surprise! Surprise! Megastar Salman Khan may soon have competition regarding who is going to be the ‘tiger’ in Bollywood!

While Salman is shooting for Yash Raj Films’ Ek Tha Tiger and Sohail Khan is reportedly planning Sher Khan with his brother, the actor’s old-time ‘frenemy’ Vivek Oberoi, is said to have gone ahead and signed on a film called Sher this week, to be directed by Soham Shah. Whether Vivek will play the title role in it or not is yet to be ascertained.

But Vivek who is already on a high with five films namely Krrish 3, Kismat Love Paisa Dilli, Zilla Ghaziabad, Jayanta Bhai and a Masti sequel under his belt, is reported to begin shooting for Sher this month itself. Which means; it’s even likely that he could beat Salman to the release of Ek Tha Tiger and of course, Sher Khan! Whoa!

When we asked Bollywood PR guru Dale Bhagwagar about these ‘star wars’ likely to turn into ‘Sher wars’ in the media, he brushed it off saying, “What difference does it make? Indian media has seen a paradigm shift in the last five years. Media is a business now and all so-called ‘wars’ are just part of good selling.”

On being probed further, the publicist remarked, “Why single out Salman Khan or Vivek Oberoi? Bollywood is a very big and extended family. There is space for everyone. Yahan sab sher hai!”

Hitman Hashmi scores a hat-trick:

As Jannat 2 opened today to overwhelming numbers, Hitman Hashmi is on a roll with 3 consecutive blockbusters in a row.

After the stupendous success of Murder 2 and The Dirty Picture, the actor scores a hat-trick with his recent film Jannat 2 that opened to full houses in cinemas today, especially in centers like Mumbai, Kolkata, Gujurat and Punjab.

Confirming the news says Jaspal Dhingra of Nanaksar Enterprise (Punjab), “People are flocking to cinemas to watch Emraan Hashmi’s performance. The film has taken an excellent opening of 80-90 per cent and opened to full houses even in multiplexes. It is doing very well in single-screens too”.

While Murder 2 grossed 36.5 crores in its opening week, The Dirty Picture netted a total of around 50 crore within the same time frame and industry experts expect Emraan’s latest release to fare even better.

Talking about the actor’s popularity says acclaimed critic and trade analyst “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Murder 2 and now Jannat 2 …Emraan has consistently opened with every film at the box office .What’s even more impressive is that films like Murder 2 and Jannat 2 are both riding solely on Emraan‘s shoulders and despite having A-certificates have managed to open bigger than several big films with U-certificates, which goes to show Emraan’s popularity, potential and star power. Like Salman Khan- Emraan Hashmi is quite the ‘ darling of the masses’”.

Says Amod Mehra, “”Emraan Hashmi is emerging out of his shell -Initially looked upon as a hero of the masses, with his recent choice of films, he is entering the big league of actors with not just the talent but the star -power to back it”

Things are looking up like never before for Hitman Hashmi who has an enviable list of films lined up cutting across various genres starting with Jannat 2, Dibaker Banerjee’s Shanghai, Percept Pictures’ Rush, Raaz 3 and Raj Kumar Gupta’s Ghanchakkar and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Dayaan.

On a high note says Emraan Hashmi, “I’m very excited that the film has opened well – I’m thrilled.”

Says Daily Bhaskar “Rajat Kapoor intelligently tackles the bizarre plot. It’s a treat to watch Ranvir Shorey explaining Gunjan Bakshi the fact that grass is always greener on the other side, when she is on the verge of committing suicide. Also, how he shares his happiness when he gets back Gul in his life. In short, the direction is the lifeline of the film which somehow gets one hooked.”

Adds acclaimed critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh “FATSO packs some notable performances by each and every member of the cast. Ranvir Shorey is endearing and believable in the title role. Gul Panag is first-rate, portraying the gamut of emotions effortlessly. Purab Kohli is effective in a brief, but significant role. Neil Bhoopalam is another actor to watch out for. He’s natural to the core.”

Says box office capsule – “Go give this slim budget comedy a fatso hug, a tight one! Watch it for sensible & warm comedy in times of nonsensical 100 cr flicks”

Tusshar Kapoor takes off on telemarketing commercials in Kya Super Kool Hai Hum:

Tusshar Kapoor’s real-life experience recently came in handy for his reel-life stint in Balaji’s Kya Super Kool Hai Hum.

Tusshar’s impromptu mimicry of telemarketing commercials on the sets of the comedy bagged him a scene in the film which is already much talked about ever since the promo was out.

Reveals a source, “Tusshar was imitating one of the infomercials on the sets and had everyone laughing off their seats. Sachin (Yardi) was so impressed that he was very keen on adding it to the film and since Tusshar plays a struggling actor in the movie it gelled perfectly with storyline.”

Confirms Tusshar Kapoor, “As we were joking, I happened to imitate one of those ads. Sachin was in splits and immediately decided to incorporate it into a scene.” says the actor, who will be seen making fun of men’s fairness cream.

After the runaway success of Balaji Motion Pictures‘ 2005 hit comedy Kyaa Kool Hain Hum, the team of the film reunites for the rib-tickling sequel, titled Kya Super Kool Hai Hum starring Tusshar, Riteish Deshmukh, Neha Sharma and Sarah-Jane Dias scheduled to release on August 2, 2012.

Fatso is about love that goes beyond looks – Gul Panag:

As Pritish Nandy Communications’ Fatso readies to releases tomorrow, lead actress Gul Panag couldn’t be more excited especially since working with director Rajat Kapoor has always been on her wish-list.

Says Gul, “Rajat is such a fun and talented person to work with…so it was a dream come true for me. Also, I know Ranvir Shorey and Purab Kohli and we are a bunch of people who come from the same space and think similarly in terms of shooting a film.” Adding that, “It’s a fun film about five friends and their intersecting love lives, friendships, heartbreaks and loss – The film looks at attraction & love through the protagonist that goes beyond good looks.”

Directed by Rajat Kapoor of Raghu Romeo and Mithya fame, Fatso starring Ranvir Shorey, Gul Panag, Purab Kohli, Neil Bhoopalam and Gunjan Bakshi takes audiences through an accidental incident ,that leads the 300 pound protagonist played by Ranvir Shorey into his afterlife,a bureaucratic mess where sometimes the wrong man finds his life cut short.

Ask the former Miss Universe(1999) if the film would seem relevant 3 years after it was made and quick comes her reply –“The film’s theme is timeless so will always be relevant. And I am always enthusiastic about things I am committed to.”

Impress Fatso at the “All-You-Can-Eat” contests:

Despite being a small-budget film, Prithish Nandy Communication’s Fatso is packing in a high-calorific punch in quite the literal sense.

With some strategic marketing and publicity, the makers take to prime locations in the city to conduct “All-You-Can-Eat” contests keeping with the theme of the film. The winners who manage to gobble down the maximum amounts of food in a span of 2 minutes win themselves tickets to watch the film with the cast.

Says a source “The Fatso All-You-Can-Eat contests are a great interactive way to promote the film – The movie is a light-hearted film and the makers wanted to keep that spirit alive even through the promotions”.

Lead actor Ranvir Shorey had to gain a whopping 20 kilos to play the protagonist in Fatso directed by Rajat Kapoor – a film that takes audiences through an accidental incident, that leads the 300 pound protagonist into his afterlife, a bureaucratic mess where sometimes the wrong man finds his life cut short.

Also starring Gul Panag, Purab Kohli, Neil Bhoopalam and Gunjan Bakshi ,Pritish Nandy Communications ‘Fatso, a delightful take on love, life, romance and the occasional accident of death, comes to a theatre near you May 4th, 2012.

BRIEF CHAT WITH JAGMOHAN SINGH
Writer-producer-director Jagmohan Singh had a chance meeting with Sunil Dutt during the making of RESHMA AUR SHERA at the opening of a new cinema hall Deep Cinema in New Delhi in 1970. He had cordial relations for years together with Sunil Dutt and also became the third party in the Delhi distribution trade for booking films at Alpana Talkies,Ashok Talkies and many other cinemas thereafter. He came to Mumbai and joined hands with top financier and distributer Jawaharlal Munot. He also turned a full fledged distributer and released many films in Delhi UP, East Punjab and Eastern Circuit. Among the films released by him were PAKEEZAH in East Punjab, MERA MUQADDAR in Eastern Circuit, OOMCHA DAR BABEY NANAK DA ( Punjabi) in Delhi and Manoj Kumar’s SANTOSH in East Punjab alongwith many other films.Success eventually knew no bounds for him and he branched into the finance sector and he financed the first ever glittering award nite which was the Bollywood Award Nite in Canada with the celebritiesa of the B-Town of Mumbai. MOHAN AYYER had a brief chat him.

You have made a comeback to Bollywood after a big gap of time. Comments.
I had remained busy in Delhi and set my foot in construction bussiness which was also very lucrative. I am involved with LAC Auto Designer Pvt. Ltd, the popular car designers of luxorious cars in Delhi. LAC is also the member of the National Limousine Association.LAC also modifies a car, vanity van and are specialists in Auto Home Caravan and their provo;eged cliemts happen to be the liquor baron Dr. Vijau Mallya. Baba Ramdev, Satpalji Maharaj, Bapu Asharamji, Raja Karan Singh of Jammu Kashmir and MDH Masala. Now this year I find the Bollywood film industry in great form and producing and directing films will be main focus and also I am seriously thinking of guiding the producers association with my various schemes .

Can you elaborate please ?
I have been a financier to many producers and I find that the producers lose money in 80% of the films. Also many films do not even get a chance to release in the cinema halls. I am in the process of finalising my meetings with all the leaders of the film industry.

Can you suggest any ways and means to help the suffering producers ?
I have come to know that the B and C grade filmmakers are suffering the most and some of them came to me for help. I will find some solutions to make them cheerful and happy and also see that their films are released.

Are you eying for the top chair of the producers association ?
No. I am only going to be a true soldier to all who turn towards me for any help.

You have made a big comeback now and you are showing leadership qualities also.Who has been yout major inspiration ?
I always got inspired by Sunil Dutt Saab. He was a hero, a producer, a director
and also one of the most successful Member Of Parliament. He remained humble throughout his career and that touched me greatly. He was the only actor who dared to go to the war front and entertain the Jawans. I always think of such people who inspire to live with happiness. I want to remove the disillusionmemt surrounding the filmmakers lives.

Madhuri Dixit gives tribute to Meena Kumari in Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa 5

OR

Madhuri revisits Meena Kumari’s Pakeezah with Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa 5

meena-kumari—pakeezahIf dance is about grace then Madhuri Dixit is the epitome of grace. We have seen so many eras go by and many actresses have left us with a lasting impression with their addas, but one from the few have stood out and is ever green – Madhuri Dixit. From her days of dhak dhak in Beta to dola re dola in Devdas, Madhuri has always captivated us with her million dollar smile and poise. And now that she is back in India for good, it is great news for all Madhuri fans as this timeless beauty is all set to celebrate the spirit of dancing with Jhalak Dikhla Ja 5 on COLORS.

In the first look promos for Jhalak Dikhala Jaa 5, Madhuri will be seen giving a tribute to the divas of yesteryears starting with the 60’s superstar Meena Kumari. Having popularized the dance form of Mujra, Meena Kumari is considered as one of the most prominent actresses and best dancers of her era. The song Thade Rahiyo from Pakeezah is one number which mesmerized us and now, it is with this very song, that Madhuri pays homage to Meena Kumari. The promo will see Madhuri in a shimmering pink anarkali outfit performing to the song in true Meena Kumari style. Madhuri’s smile lit up a thousand faces around her and she floored everyone on the sets while shooting the promo with her poise, her mastery over dance and her cheerful and loving presence. And when Madhuri dances, it’s not just her feet… her expressive eyes, the twitch of an eyebrow, the serene smile and the swish of her gait…it all combines to truly depict what dancing from the heart really encompasses! After all, that was exactly the message she was trying to convey through the promos.

The sets replicate the Pakeezah look completely – from the fountains to the pond with floating candles, lights etc. Her expressions and style on Thade Rahiyo O Baanke Yaar is definitely going to leave everyone wanting to see more! There is no doubt that Madhuri is one actress who can do a disco and a mujra with the same finesse and élan.

Regards,

Vignesh

BBC World News Horizons explores how technology aims to limit the impact of pandemics and natural disasters

Broadcasting on BBC World News 5th May and 6th May 2012

In the fifth episode of Horizons, presenters Adam Shaw and Saima Mohsin travel to Toronto, Canada and College Station, Texas to explore how the world is adapting to ever changing threats to public health and learn about the pioneering technologies and response systems working to predict and respond to worldwide outbreaks of disease and natural disasters.

It has been estimated that there are more new diseases emerging today than ever before and with two billion people boarding commercial flights every year there has never been greater opportunities for localised outbreaks of disease to radically transform into international epidemics.

Adam Shaw travels to Toronto, Canada, to meet Dr Kamran Khan, one of the creators behind Bio.Diaspora, a piece of equipment that maps the emergence of new diseases in real time and predicts where they may spread globally through the movements of international travellers. Dr Kamran Khan said: “If we look at pandemics, historically they’ve happened every 30 to 40 years but the question is ‘is that the same interval we’re going to see in the future?’ and I’m not sure that is the case now as there are a number of global forces converging. The world’s population is getting larger, our interactions with animals are changing and most new diseases, swine or bird flu and even HIV for example, come from animals. We also have climate change and a number of other factors so it may be that in the future, pandemics will be occurring more frequently than we’ve seen in the past.”

Adam’s journey also takes him to meet Dr. Michael Gardam in Toronto, who was part of a team responsible for dealing with the 2003 SARS outbreak in the city, and investigates how Bio.Diaspora could change the world’s ability to react to global threats to public health.

Continuing the exploration into global threats to the public, Horizons co-presenter Saima Mohsin comes face to face with Disaster City in College Station, Texas, USA. The mock city provides the most comprehensive emergency response training facility in the world, housing collapsible structures that are designed to simulate a variety of disaster scenarios, including terrorist attacks and earthquakes. Saima explores how Disaster City has equipped emergency personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively in the most challenging situations.

William Welch, Communications Manager, Texas Engineering Extension, commented: “We provide the responder who trains here with the experience of having gone through a scenario in a very realistic way so that when they respond in real life they have a level of training and experience that is going to enable them to perform better. Eventually there will be a disaster which is big enough that everyone will have to work together so we should train, plan and prepare before it happens.”

Saima is also given a practical demonstration of the LifeLocator, a sensory device that helps to find living victims trapped under collapsed buildings. Already deployed in a number of major disasters including the Japan earthquake in 2011, it has been estimated that the device was responsible for saving the lives of at least fifty victims of the Sichuan Province earthquake. Saima meets David Cist from Geophysical Survey Systems Inc. who explains how, unlike other forms of search equipment where the sensor is moved in order to detect underground objects, the Lifelocator’s sensor is stationary allowing rescuers to detect much fainter signs of life.

The Horizons series, sponsored by DuPont, airs weekly on BBC World News in the month of April every Saturday at 7.00am & 2.00pm and Sundays at 8.00pm & 2.00am. Photographs are available on request.
