Plan India to organize ‘Because I am a Girl Rock Concert’ to celebrate first ever ‘International Day of the Girl Child’

Mumbai, 25th September 2012: Mr. Anil Kapoor, Patron & Goodwill Ambassador for Plan India, the leading child centred community development organization working in India for over 32 years announced that ‘ Because I am a Girl Rock Concert’ , to be held at Chitrakoot ground, Andheri , West in Mumbai on October 10, 2012 , 5:30 onwards. The Concert is aimed at drawing the attention of masses towards the cause of Girl Child as a part of first ever ‘International Day of the Girl Child’ Celebrations, organised by Plan India to support its ‘Because I am a Girl’ (BIAAG) campaign. The concert would raise awareness and funds that would be utilized to improve the lives of the girls through education, protection, skill building and empowerment.

The conference was chaired by Mr. Govind Nihalani, Chairperson, Governing Board, Plan India, Ms. Bhagyashri Dengle, Executive Director, Plan India in presence of the artists of the performing Rock Bands Indian Ocean, Indus Creed, Sona Mahapatra, Euphoria, Papon and Parikrama. Together they unveiled the anthem for the ’BIAAG’ campaign, a song composed by the artists of Rock Bands performing at the BIAAG Rock Concert, as a tribute to the Girl Child.

A historic milestone for girls’ rights was reached when the UN General Assembly recently declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. Plan had helped lead the call for this commemorative day as part of it’s ‘Because I am a Girl’ (BIAAG) initiative, a global movement to end gender inequality and promote girls’ rights. India also supported the resolution at the UN and Plan India is celebrating the upcoming day in a big way to spread the message of ensuring India’s commitment to girls’ rights.

‘Because I am a Girl’ (BIAAG) is a global initiative launched by Plan to promote girls’ rights and lift millions of them out of poverty. It is geared towards equipping, enabling and engaging girls of all ages to acquire the assets, skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in life. Plan India is attempting to initiate change at a number of levels (i.e. local, national and international) with the assistance of a number of partners. Some of the indicators of the campaign’s success are, infant mortality rate, primary school enrolment, the number of girls in Plan communities who – survive beyond the age of five years, complete school, and have access to healthcare and the skills to lift themselves out of poverty.

This year the goal of Plan’s Because I Am a Girl campaign is “Learning for Life” which commits towards building the human capital of girls through knowledge and skills, aiming to equip, enable and empower girls of all ages to acquire the assets, skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in life. Adolescent girls stand at the doorway to adulthood. If adolescent girls stay in school and obtain real skills, research shows that they will earn more income in the future, marry later, and have fewer and healthier children. In the longer term, secondary education protects girls against HIV and AIDS, sexual harassment and human trafficking. A combination of secondary education with financial assets and life skills, is essential for adolescent empowerment, development and protection.

Mr Anil Kapoor, Patron & Goodwill Ambassador, Plan India said “I have supported Plan India for over six years and have worked closely for various causes including Birth Registration, Violence against children, and human trafficking. However the cause of Girls remains closest to my heart as I am a father of two wonderful daughters.”

I have also been extensively involved with one of the Plan communities in Rajasthan to rehabilitate girls and women from a caste based sex trade system and my experience of meeting young girls from these communities was truly life changing. It gave me an insight into how girls are far more vulnerable and the critical role Plan India has played in making them aware of their basic rights. It’s really important to educate girls to ensure they obtain right skill set, marry later and lead a safe and healthy life. I echo Plan India voice for investing in Girls as the principal key to eliminating poverty .” He added.

Ms. Bhagyashri Dengle, Executive Director, Plan India said, “Ending gender discrimination and promoting girls’ empowerment is a key focus area as a part of Plan India’s Because I am Girl Campaign. Plan India programmes aim at transforming the lives of girls by overcoming barriers and building their assets through a life cycle approach so that they realize their full potential in societies that recognize the equal rights of boys and girls.”

“Over next five years, Plan’s ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign aims to support millions of girls worldwide to get the education, skills and support they need to transform their lives and the world around them. In India we aim to ensure over 3, 40, 000 girls remain in school and access quality education, 1,00,000 girls complete secondary school through various school improvement program and 50,000 girls receive vocational training by the year 2015.” She added.

Michelle Rodriguez’s character gets a little more quirky and a little more sexy

The fifth installment in the Resident Evil series is back and with the series return the unsung heroes of the film. The Resident Evil-Retribution of Sony Pictures sees the return of one of the popular characters- Rain Ocampo-played by Michelle Rodriguez.

Rain Ocampo, a member of the Umbrella special commando unit, a skilled marksman, and her team were dispatched to contain the infection after the outbreak. But after Rain was infected with the deadly T-virus and transformed into a zombie, she was killed. Excited on her reentry in the series Rodriguez said, “I’m really happy to be back. I didn’t think there’d ever be a possibility of bringing back my character. But there’s always an open window when you’re dealing with science fiction. The possibilities are endless. I’m really happy we have a director who is so creative.”

However, the twist in the tale is the two very diverse characters Rodriguez will be portraying in the film. One character displays her tough side, a hard-as-nails weapons specialist working for the Umbrella Corporation, and the other one a Prius-driving, tree-hugging student with a fondness for high heels. Usually known for playing strong female characters the soft side of Rodriguez gets revealed with her character of a student. She agrees, “I’m avid about guns and a bit of a tomboy. Much of my career has been defined by that. It was a nice shift into playing someone a little laid back and sexy for a change. It was cool and fun to play someone who is quirky and doesn’t know how to handle a gun.”

Anderson who wanted to work with Rodriguez once again said, “I’ve never met a woman who feels more at home wearing a pair of combat pants and carrying a heavy machine gun. But when I talked to Michelle about returning for this movie, she said she was really interested in exploring different aspects of herself as a woman in her movie persona. We developed a character for her that is more traditionally feminine. The biggest challenge for her was wearing a pair of high heels. It was fun to see Michelle navigate in stilettos. She was unsteady on them, which shows a completely fresh side of her.”

The film releases in 3D all over India on 28th September in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu.

“Have Feet, Will Run…!”

96-year-old Mann Kaur to run for 2012 edition of the prestigious Airtel Delhi Half Marathon

The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon, among the country’s top running events and one of the few half marathons from around the world to enjoy IAAF Gold Label Status is scheduled to be held on 30th September 2012. An event that is known to attract a world-class field – a claim backed by the super fast winning times – will witness its oldest runner 96-year-old Mann Kaur, who will participate in the 2012 edition of the event.

As someone who truly defies age, Mann Kaur is getting set to demonstrate to Delhites that age is no bar and that barriers exist only in the mind. Kaur, who hails from Chandigarh, is a woman who has raced her way to glory in many championships with training from son Gurdev Singh, who lives in Canada and is also an extraordinary runner. She took up running under the encouragement of her son, who is 75-years-old himself.

Recently, Kaur won a Gold Medal each in the 100 and 200-meter categories in the World Masters Athletic Championship in Sacramento, USA through the Masters Athletic Federation of India. She is rightly called the ‘Golden Girl of India’. While not a marathoner, it is still an amazing achievement by an amazing woman.

Son Gurudev Singh said, “In 2008, I went to Canada for the World Masters Championship where I saw a participant named Olga who was 90-years-old. It was then that I convinced my mother to take up athletics as I knew her fitness levels.”

Together with her son, Mann Kaur is gearing up to participate in this year’s Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. It’s a first time at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon for both of them and Mann is all excited to run that extra mile with her son.

This year, my son and I are participating in the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and I am really excited. It’s a message for all the people around – Have Feet, Will Run, Have Will, Will Triumph!”

Inspiring accounts such as these will definitely stir a growing interest in the minds and bodies of many senior citizens to stay active and participate in such events.

New Young Blood ,Roman Sen of “Fiery Tiger Productions” announces his maiden Venture Film “Sanki ”

Age is no bar when it comes to Bollywood. The last few years have seen a deluge of young talent hitting the screen. The latest in this trend is twenty-three year old Roman Sen, scion of the Katha group family, Roman Sen had launched his production house Fiery Tiger Productions with an aim to produce quality cinema with a commercial edge.

When contacted Roman stated candidly “We’ll be producing three films in a year which will be content-driven films but at the same time will have prominent names attached. My observation in Bollywood has been that sometimes content-driven films lose out on glamour quotient while some high-budget, star-driven films lose out on content. My endeavour will be to balance these two very necessary ingredients of cinema. Hence, I’ve positioned my production house as producers of content-driven cinema with high entertainment value and glamour quotient which according to me is a winning formula. My slate has three films in this financial year. I spent the last three months meeting directors and I finally zeroed in to writer-director Manish Gupta to helm my first venture – a suspense thriller titled ‘SANKI’. I chose Manish because I love his sense of crafting screenplay and dialogues. I loved his writing in ‘SARKAR’ and I was impressed with his direction in ‘THE STONEMAN MURDERS’.

When contacted, Manish sounded equally charged to join hands with Roman, “Roman like the name of his company suggests has fire in his belly! Hence his temperament matches with my own. His decision to support this film is laudable because it is a brave and bold film which will break all conventions of Indian cinema. In this film, the hero of the film is actually a villain and the villain is actually a hero. My job to make the audience fall in love with a villain is tough and it is indeed a brave decision on Roman’s part to back me”

The occasion was also used to announce the finalists of the Peoples Green Award, an initiative by promoters Procam International, to recognize and honour individuals and corporate who are making that extra effort to make the earth a greener and better place to live in.

Since its inception, the Delhi half Marathon has helped raise around Rs 13.74 crores benefitting in excess of 200 NGOs and this time around, the target is to cross the Rs 4 crore mark in clearly tracked funds raised for charity. Already the collection has crossed Rs .35 crores. Last year the event had helped raise Rs 3.30 crores

Each year since its inception, the Delhi Half Marathon has received a better response than the previous year. Every edition sees more NGOs, more runners, more corporate teams and more funds raised toward charity. The Delhi Half Marathon has progressed from 27 participating NGOs in its first year to over 75 in 2012, the 5th edition of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon. As of today, there are 72 corporates with 95 teams registered to run.

There are a large number of individual runners too who have dedicated much time and effort into raising impressive sums for the charities they support. The youngest of these are Urvi Maheshwari in class 7, who has raised Rs. 2.3 lakhs so far and Madhur Dhupar, 13 years old, who has raised Rs.3.5 lakh.

“I feel humbled and privileged to be able to do something that will help needy children. This is the most rewarding and satisfying thing I have ever done. But I am also aware that the money that I have collected is a drop in the ocean. I would like to do much more to help children who are less fortunate than me. I am happy to run in the Great Delhi Run, but the bigger thing is that in the process I have discovered a worthwhile goal that will enrich my life and give it direction,” said Urvi.

To inspire corporates and individuals to reduce carbon emission and to acknowledge their efforts, the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon announced the inaugural chapter of the People’s Green Award, a platform to admire and acknowledge people who share the dream to make the earth a greener and better place to live in.
