There is indeed a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow this week, as the Kashish queer film festival returns in its third year in association with Bombay Dost, Solaris Pictures and The Humsafar Trust. Running from May 23 to May 27, the festival will showcase hundred and twenty films from thirty countries featuring France as its country of focus and will be screened at Cinemax Versova and Alliance Francaise (New Marine Lines). The best part: it’s open to all and costs close to nothing. Oui our family!

Rainbow Rendezvous

Opening night (May 23 at Cinemax Versova, 9.30 pm) will see a screening of Oscar-winning film Beginners (2010) starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer, however, this event is by invitation only. Other top draws at the festival (and open to all) are twenty-three full-length films featuring Gigola (France), set in the 1960’s underbelly of Paris (May 25 at Cinemax Versova, 8.30 pm and on May 26 at Alliance Francaise, 6.30 pm); Men to Kiss (Germany), a romantic comedy about a chaotic relationship (May 26 at Cinemax Versova, 8.30 pm); and August (USA), a drama about re-union after a painful break-up (May 24 at Cinemax Versova, 11 pm). There are also quite a few short film packages like Girls Shorts, Rainbow Warriors and Unfair Games, among others. Interesting is the new category of nine animated shorts titled QToons, one of which features a gay orange, and another is about The Happiest Gay Couple In All The World.

Window of Hope

Due to the overwhelming response that the festival has received this year, they have shut online registrations but are allowing spot registrations on May 24 at Cinemax Versova and Alliance Francaise, so get there early by 10.30 am to claim your delegate pass, which entitles you entry to all days of the festival. These spot registrations will be given against a small donation of Rs 100 which will go towards a peer HIV support group.

And finally, an LGBT festival without a party? That doesn’t sound right. So to kick things off there’s a Kashish festival bar night organised at Banana Bar on Linking Road on May 24, where trailers of films from the festival will be screened and the community’s favourite hits by Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry will be played. Fabulous!

12th Osian’s-Cinefan Opens on 27 July 2012, showcases World Cinema

Launches New Festival Symbol on ‘World Turtle Day’

Mumbai, 23 May 2012,: Osian’s announced that the 12th Osian’s-Cinefan Film Festival will take place from 27th July to 5th August 2012. Dedicated to bringing the finest films from India, Asia and the Arab world, the 12th edition of the Osian’s-Cinefan Festival will showcase an exciting and bold program of over 200 films from more than 50 countries representing the best of Asian, Arab and Indian Cinema. The conceptual framework of ‘Freedom of Creative Thought & Expression’ is the focus of this year’s festival.

The venue for the Flim Festival would be the Siri Fort Complex and the new Kila Complex which includes the forthcoming Osianama – Art & Film Museum and Blue Frog, New Delhi. As since its inception, the Festival is being organized in collaboration with the Government of NCT of Delhi.

Along with Competition Sections, First Features, Animation and Short Films will also be given special platforms. Cinefan’s new ‘7.4’ section on films dedicated to the themes of Environmental Issues – will be a precursor of a Summit on Natural and Man-made Heritage, which by 2013 will translate into a new film festival dedicated to this subject.

With this new focus on environment, Osian’s-Cinefan proudly announces that in its 12th year it has chosen the Turtle as its future symbol for the festival. These ancient yet contemporary creatures represent longevity and wisdom. Also, the turtle is the spiritual vehicle (vahana) for one of India’s great rivers – the Yamuna. It also holds a sacred place in Indian mythology as Lord Vishnu’s first incarnate form was the turtle (Kurma avatar) which plunged into the ocean to help churn out the nectar of immortality (amrit). And, finally the turtle represents the struggle for survival in face of an increasingly hostile environment. It is essential and clear that all of us today place contemporary ecological thoughts uppermost in all we do and prioritize.

On ‘World Turtle Day’ (23rd May) Osian’s salutes all the organizations and individuals across the globe that are so valiantly fighting to conserve the turtle and many other rare species against all kinds of depredations and attacks.

The environmental focus is taken also taken forward by commissioning a new Osian’s – Cinefan Award Trophy crafted out of the eco friendly material – terracotta – by eminent artist K. Laxma Goud. His depictions since the early 1970s depicting the human-animal-nature continuum represent some of the finest examples of modern Indian art.

India’s much-loved music station has always been socially conscious, and in continuation towards this effort will support Raindropss’ educate a child project.

92.7 BIG FM has always been a station which has made available its platform to support worthy causes & projects. All its brand initiatives have been associated with spreading awareness among the public like the BIG Green Ganesha Campaign recently where they promoted the cause of using recycled paper to make Ganesha idols. Other socially relevant messages are also regularly broadcast on the station in Chennai and other parts of the country as well.

Raindroppss is a youth based team from Chennai which concentrates on delivering social awareness messages to the public in the form of short films and theme songs through entertainment and media. This was in perfect sync with the social ideals that 92. 7 BIG FM stood for.

The theme song was released jointly by actor Aadhi of Kochadaiyaan fame and playback singer A.R. Raihanah, who is also the brand ambassador of Raindropss. 92.7 BIG FM, Raindropss and Vellamal International School hope to create awareness for the project through this endeavour.

Mr. Girinand scored the music for the theme song and the lyrics are written by Niranjan Bharathi. Mrs Raihanah, sister of Oscar winner A.R. Rahman, sang the theme song along with other vocalists such as Srinivas, Priya Hemesh, VV Prasanna, MLR Karthikeyan, Saindhavi, Nikhil Mathews, Suchith, Vandana, Sakthi and Malavika Manoj who were all present.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas goes 3D

Surpassing the Oscar winning French film “The Artist” and Luhrmann’s musical Moulin Rouge, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s adaptation of the 1917 Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel –Devdas stood on the number 8 slot on the coveted Times Magazines ’10 Greatest Movies of the Millennium list –

Says an excited Sanjay Leela Bhansali “The news couldn’t have come at a better time ,Devdas completes 10 momentous years…It’s a very proud and happy moment for me. When Devdas released, it was slammed by Indian critics for being over-the-top and melodramatic. But Corliss had loved the film and supported it for the same qualities. Today, when he selects Devdas alongside The Artiste and Avatar as one of his 10 favorite films of the millennium, I feel that my struggle was worth it”

If that wasn’t all, the film is now going to release in a 3D version to commemorate its 10 glorious years of cinema.

Confirming the news says the director “This is the tenth year of Devdas and, somehow, the film hasn’t lost its sheen. We’re now going to do a 3D version of the film to commemorate these ten years”.

Sunil Lulla, who is part of the film corporation that is working on the 3-D version, says, “The film completes a decade this year. And to commemorate its 10th year, we will release a 3-D version of this Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay classic.”

With the release of his forthcoming production Rowdy Rathore around the corner,the director-producer soon readies for his ambitious next tentatively titled Ram Leela starring Kareena Kapoor- Ranveer Singh .

Will Men in Black 3 create yet another world record in India?
Men in black 3 which was recently screened in Berlin was recorded in the Guinness book of world record for being largest ever 3D movie screening in Germany. The screening was attended by 6,819 film fans at Berlin’s O2 World.

This special premier was attended by Film’s director Barry Sonnenfeld along with the star cast Josh Brolin, Will Smith and Nichole Scherzinger.

The movie though will release later this month in Germany but it is to see will the Indian film fans be able to create a record breaking turn out as their German counterparts?

The Sony Picture’s movie releases in 3D all over India on 25th May in Hindi,English,Tamil and Telugu.
