HRITHIK ROSHAN TURNS MENTOR Actor takes Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra and Arjun Kapoor under his wing; helps them learn the ropes

Actor takes Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra and Arjun Kapoor under his wing; helps them learn the ropes

Bollywood’s boy brigade has found a mentor in none other than Hrithik Roshan. And the actor, too, seems to have readily taken Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra and Arjun Kapoor under his wing, giving them professional advice and occasional pep talks.

While Arjun successfully made his entry into the film industry with the May 2012 release Ishaqzaade, Sidharth and Varun debuted with the multi-starrer hit, Student Of The Year (SOTY) a few months after that.

Though the three actors’ second films are yet to hit the big screen, Hrithik has apparently already spotted their potential. “He is really impressed with them. He formally met Sidharth at the Marrakech Film Festival last year and just sat him down for a quick chat,” says a source. However, what moved Sidharth the most was the fact that Hrithik made time to speak to him even though they had never met before. “He’s a really cool guy and he has these great philosophies. He told me that acting is a giving medium. It’s about letting go and not holding on to anything,” says Sidharth, clearly awed.

Hrithik also interacted with star sons Varun (David Dhawan’s son) and Arjun (Boney Kapoor’s son) during the promotions of their debut films. “I met him for the first time with Karan (Johar, director). And I just couldn’t say anything. I kept staring at him, speechless. When I met him for the second time, things were a little better,” says Varun, who considers Hrithik a great source of inspiration.

Arjun, who most recently received a call from Hrithik, adds, “In all my interactions with him, he has always been encouraging — whether it’s about my training or my acting. He actually messaged me because he liked my upcoming film, Aurangzeb’s poster.”

Mrs. Rajashree Birla – “Championing Polio Eradication Drive”,

Mumbai 2013 :- In collaboration with the Government of India’s Health Department, across the country, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and Rotary International, the Aditya Birla Group has been supporting the polio eradication drive. A special programme “Championing the Polio Eradication Drive” at Mumbai’s Raj Bhavan, was held today. The Honourable Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Sankaranarayan and Mrs. Rajashree Birla, Chairperson, Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development flagged off the drive, administering polio drops to children.

Speaking on the occasion Mrs. Birla said – “For over two years now, we in India, have not reported a single polio case. It’s a very happy situation. Imagine the world, at one time, looked upon India, as the epicenter of polio. To give you the context, before the polio eradication drive was launched, some 15 years ago, 2,00,000 children would be crippled every year! It has been a long and arduous journey. But we have managed it and there is therefore much to cheer.

Collectively the Government machinery Rotary International and the Aditya Birla Group work to ensure that every single child is immunized. Every year more than 170 million children are given the pulse polio drops”.

Said Mrs. Birla, “We, at the Aditya Birla Group, have and continue to work with single-minded focus, in supporting Rotary International and the Government in the polio eradication drive. Our various establishments are actively involved, and our teams ensure that every child takes the pulse polio drops. Likewise, we set up booths in Mumbai, including several at railway stations and also undertook door-to-door campaign. In the last 3 years only, our teams have helped administer polio drops to over 18 million children through thousands of booths all over the country.

Two years and not a single new case of polio, is a message of great hope. But let me add a word of caution. Polio still exists in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. The virus can still travel to India as people move from one country to another. We have to be very cautious and pro-active to ensure that the virus is not allowed to re-enter our country”.

Mrs. Birla added a word of caution averring that “there is no room for complacency. In India, we have to continue the momentum. In fact, the World Health Organization has advised India to maintain sensitive surveillance and ensure high childhood immunity against the wild polio virus. This is vital to ensure that no strain of polio is imported to our country, until eradication is attained worldwide.

Another polio-free year and we hope the W H O will declare our country as ‘Polio-free’”.

Growing up with Gippi! – Riya Vij

She has made us sit up and take note, as she struggles with all the little-big concerns of an adolescent. Gurpreet Kaur, Gippy is disarming and touchingly naïve as she squeezes into bras, deals with weight issues, falls in and out of love and tackles everything from acne to friendships.

Fourteen-year-old Delhi girl Riya Vij, Who plays the protagonist in Sonam Nair’s directorial, mirrors all the concerns of the young adult she plays, and even throws in some pearls of teen wisdom, the way only girls can.

When we caught up with the amateur pianist and basketball enthusiast, she was on her Way back from her school Mater Dei. And in the course of the next few minutes, she told us everything we Wanted to know about her life, her family (she has an 18-year-old elder sister, her father is an entrepreneur) and how she would one day like to become a dentist or a photographer. But only if Bollywood does not Work out for her. Plan B and C already?

It was a friend who dragged her to audition for the role, chirps Riya. “Actually it was my friend who wanted to do the role badly. I just tagged along,” she says. But a simple twist of fate landed the role on her lap, putting her friendship to a serious test. Her friend was hurt, Riya admits, but adds, “For a few moments she was quite down, but eventually We worked it out.” The day Riya was for the role, her family surprised her with a cake. “That was when I began to take all this seriously,” she says.

Like most girls her age, Riya says it’s her mom who knows best. “My dad did not read the script. My mom combed it. She said, there was a nice underlying message, that girls should be comfortable in their skin during their growing up years. She wanted me to do the film,” says Riya adding, “My mom is my friend and my sister as well.”

Not particularly interested in academics (‘Which kid is these days?’she laughs), Riya had her ‘grown up’ moment While shooting for the film. Her mother used to accompany her to the sets every day during the Simla schedule. “But one day I told her that I wanted to be there on my own. She was hesitant at first, but eventually agreed,” says Riya. A small step that went a long way in bolstering her confidence.

In the film, Gippy, an awkward teenager, gets bullied because of her weight and her lack of ‘coolth’. But in real life Riya is in a happier space. “I don’t get bullied because of my weight, thankfully. I really think the problem with adolescents is that they are too conscious about themselves and feel inferior to others. They try to ape the cooler kids.”

And with a flash of wisdom that belies her age, Riya says: “No one should be embarrassed about who they are. There are intense physical and emotional changes when we are growing up, and it is all natural.”

Aware that she may have to conform to a certain Bollywood prototype if she considers a career in the industry, Riya says calmly: “If I have to lose weight, I will. Only when I grow up. . .”

No! It’s not a personal vacation but a professional tour. When we say Deepika Padukone is all set to tour the UAE, UK and some other parts of the globe with co-star Ranbir Kapoor from April 30, it’s all work. The young, good-looking, successful couple is meant to be making the rounds for their forthcoming film – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Deepika, whose schedule is jam-packed because she is over-committed to her movies, has actually taken time off from Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rohit Shetty to accommodate the Yeh Jawaani film promotion tour. And she will go around the globe in 20 odd days with RK Jr and an entourage.

PRESS RELEASE April 10, 2013

It has been record-breaking season at the landmark 10th edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. The international elite athletes set the ball rolling on Race Day by lowering the course records for men and women on January 20, 2013. This momentum has been carried forward in the charity drive associated with the event, resulting in an exponential record-breaking increase in the amounts raised for charity, befitting the 10th anniversary of this unique event.

The milestone year helped inspire all those associated with the charity drive, spearheaded by United Way of Mumbai, the Official Charity Partner, to make that extra effort and the results are evident for all to see. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2013 motivated a cross section of the city’s citizenry, young and old, from all walks of life, to come together and generate a whopping Rs 18.61 crores in charity for causes of their choice. This figure is an increase of almost Rs 2.5 crores over the Rs 16.07 crores generated in 2012 and will benefit 230 NGOs as compared to 197 last year.

Right from the inaugural edition, in 2004, the event advocated the cause of charity, providing a platform for NGOs, corporates and individuals to come together and raise money for causes of their choice. The results, then, were encouraging enough to predict that in the very near future this event would also rank among the top internationally acclaimed marathons that raise sizeable amounts of money for charity.

This response to the charity drive has surpassed the collection of all previous editions, reaffirming that the city of Mumbai and Mumbaikars have a strong social conscience.

While the spiraling effect of the legacy that the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon leaves behind through charity is immense, in monetary terms it works out to over Rs 89 crores in ten years.

The charity figures were announced by Dr. Indu Shahani, Chairperson, United Way of Mumbai at a special function held to felicitate the fund raisers at the Trident, Nariman Point on Wednesday. Also in attendance were Shri Chhagan Bhujbal, Hn’ble Minster, Public Works & Tourism, Shri Anil Deshmukh, Hon’ble Minster, Food & Civil Supplies, Shri Jayant Kumar Bhantia, Chief Secretary, Shri J S Sahariya, Additional Chief Secretaruy, Sports & Education, Shri S J Kunte, Commissioner MCGM and Shri Satyapal Singh, Commissioner of Police, among others.

In attendance also was Sumeet Singla Regional Head Corporate Affairs, India & South Asia, Standard Chartered, the title sponsor, Girish Ramachandran, Vice President Corporate, Tata Consultancy Services and Vishal Jhunjhunwala, Head Corporate Brand Tata Consultancy Services, the Associate Sponsor, besides representatives of the various partners to the event.

“The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has grown leaps and bounds since its inception over the last decade and has garnered an overwhelming response from all quarters of society. Our vision was to create a cornerstone event, one that would grow in magnitude and provide an opportunity for every individual to represent and contribute to a cause. In the last ten years, the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has come to stand for something much bigger than a sports event and has emerged as a platform to significantly contribute and raise funds for various charitable causes. This event has raised a remarkable INR 18.60 crores, benefitting over 232 NGOs in its 10th year. This is a significant achievement and truly reflects the desire and willingness of the people of Mumbai to contribute and make a difference to society,” said Sumeet Singla, Regional Head Corporate Affairs India & South Asia, Standard Chartered Bank.

“TCSers as well as our key stakeholders – families and partners – once again participated in large numbers to run in this unique event not just to test their fitness limits but also to contribute to a cause. As part of the Tata Group we are not only committed to giving back to the communities in which we operate in, but to take it a step further and have embraced a philosophy that entails promoting an active, healthy lifestyle among our various stakeholders and the communities we operate in. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has grown to become one of the country’s, if not the world’s, leading platforms to raise funds for a greater cause and we are delighted to have participated, for the sixth consecutive year, in such a wonderful event,” said N.
