‘Sex is not a bad thing’

Adult film star-turned-actress Sunny Leone is visibly excited about her Hindi cinema debut. All about ‘Jism 2’, her character, and lots more about her personality…she gets talking in an exclusive uncensored chat…

If the promos and posters of her debut film, ‘Jism 2’ weren’t enough, Sunny Leone herself is in town to set the temperature soaring as she promotes the film. Amidst a number of other promotional activities, she takes time out for a chat as we travel with her to her hotel. Her chirpiness, and child-like bubbly smile, makes you forget where she’s come from. While we travel, she sees huge hoarding of ‘Jism 2’ on the way. She has a huge smile seeing that. “You know, I don’t really know how to feel. All this is so new for me. I’d never thought someday, I’d see myself like this, on these huge posters as I travel. I’ve always desired to be a part of Hindi films, but I never gave much prominence to that thought, because I thought it could never happen. Never had I anticipated that I’d see myself on the 70mm. I guess, I feel really good,” she says.

But tell her that the promos are a rage already, and the music has gained popularity and she turns modest. “These are just the promos. I want people to see the film and like the film. I hope they do,” says Sunny. Interestingly, her character in the film, Izna, is also a pornstar. Though, she denies any kind of similarity to her real self. “The film is a journey of a girl struggling with love. We all have a past, things in our past. And how do you react when your past comes in front of you. She struggles. She innocently gets trapped in all the chaos created by Arunoday and Randeep’s character.” She further adds, “Izna is really different from what I am. I’ve never met a girl in my life ever. She’s a character created in the beautiful mind of Mr Mahesh Bhatt.”

And while she has mentioned her co-stars Arunoday Singh and Randeep Hooda, how was the experience working with them? “Arunoday is a lot of fun. He always makes you laugh, and keep the atmosphere light on the sets. So, we share a very friendly bonding. Randeep on the other hand, is very serious. He’s always into his character while the rest of us were serious only when the shot was taken. And you know Randeep hasn’t shot many lovemaking scenes in his earlier films, so, he could be a little apprehensive, but I think, we were comfortable then,” she smiles.

Oh and here’s the topic of lovemaking scenes. We wonder how different was it for Sunny, like the whole experience of shooting an intimate scene. If you know, what me mean. She laughs, “You know the only difference is that here it was all choreographed. Like the hand should go like this, and all. Films that I shoot, we shoot an hour of lovemaking scene, and then edit and use the parts of the shot we liked. Here in Hindi films, we try to make the director’s vision come true. Pooja (Bhatt) had her vision as to how she wanted it. So, we were working towards making her happy, and make it look good. A lot of detailing is needed here.”

The debutante is also all praise for director Pooja Bhatt. “Pooja and Dino Morea have worked 24 hours each day on this film. And I’ve learnt so much from Pooja. So many details, like she tells me not to blink my eye and all. It has been an enriching experience.” This certainly contradicts, those stories in the media, of a tiff among Sunny and Pooja.

Though, Sunny doesn’t feel that the film is too bold, the censor board obviously has issues. And Hindi cinema is certainly not well-versed with extremely bold content. It’s more difficult to break the mould, because of stereotypes that have set it. What does Sunny feel about it? “You know, cinema is changing now. Cinema has always keep changing, and it will continue to do so. We need to accept that change. Things you see now on TV are different than what you saw 10 years back. Change is inevitable, or else we wouldn’t learn. And sex is not a bad thing. It’s what culminates among two people who are truly, madly, deeply, in love. It’s something beautiful that people do, that results into beautiful babies,” she smiles.

Whatever her profession be, her personal life is on the rocks. That’s probably because, she chooses her partner in her films. Interestingly, she has sex on with her husband she says. And earlier, it would be her boyfriend. Infact, nothing makes her happy than spending time with her family. It’s endearing to know that behind this sexy hot star, is a simple girl, who is actually a nerd. Yes, a nerd, you heard it right. ‘I’m such a nerd. I always carry books to read. When we were once on the flight going for the shoot, I was making a scarf, and everyone in the crew was laughing at me. Then I decided not to do it in front of them (laughs). I love dogs, I keep adopting dogs, and urge people to do so. I love spending time with my husband, we go surfing and all. But I guess, you must ask my husband how I am as a person.” She calls her husband and he says, “You know the best thing about Sunny is, she is always so cute. I’m stressed, and if at all, one has any problem, and you talk to her, you can’t help but feel good. She’s so positive.”

Well, now we know why Sunny married Daniel Weber. We’re sure, she’s set to sizzle the silver screen, with jaws dropping, as ‘Jism 2’ releases this week.

Post ‘Jism 2’, she shall commence shooting for Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Ragini MMS’ that she confirms being a part of.

Jatin Varma and Shradha Murarka Created Magic on the Ramp at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012

Jatin Varma Dazzled the Audience with his Red Carpet Couture Collection at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012

Mumbai, Friday, August 3, 2012: “Dark Angels” presented by Jatin Varma at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 had all the right touches of a Red Carpet couture collection. Elegant, sophisticated with dark Gothic touches; the gowns and minis with distinct power shoulders along with chains, felt appliqué, embroidery, brass, beads and sequins work had touches of feathers to create a dramatic impact.

The bold silhouettes were further highlighted by shades of midnight blue, stone, wine, deep purple which added to the geometrics on the creations.

Jatin gave his Gothic theme a modern twist as the stunning outfits were a feat of imaginative design. The silhouettes were lean and figure hugging with the creations almost moulded to the body, as the embellishments snaked up and down the curves of the garments with a distinct muted glitter.

Mini sheaths, clinging gowns, flapper dresses with rows of glittering bead work, slinky maxis with mosaic designs with shine and opaque touches, the fully encrusted sheaths with plunging backs and extended shoulders were sensational. Transparency appeared for yokes and the final sheer with solid touches for the gown was breathtaking.

“Dark Angels” moved away from the soft cuts and showed Jatin Varma’s edgy designing skills that made strong statements with the Gothic touches.

Shradha Murarka of Vizyon Unveiled an Aesthetic Collection at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012

“Enlightened Shadows” was the dramatic title of the collection presented at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Fashion 2012 by Shradha Murarka and Ninon Palisse of Vizyon.

It was haute couture inspired by the romantic, mysterious yet seductive eras and poems of dark and enchanting life. To match the look, the colour palette moved from brown, porcelain and black to midnight blue, turquoise and green. Geometrics and abstract shapes appeared for the silhouettes along with embellishments, which revealed the illusion of insects, beetle shells, butterfly wings and cobbled web motifs that gave an unconventional touch.

The soft feminine fabrics ranged from matte cady and black lamé to georgette, leather and taffeta, that was crafted into stunning cocktail dresses, elegant jackets, skirts, jersey trunks and sweeping Red Carpet gowns. The matching line of leather shoes in blue and black was a perfect complement to the collection.

The lean silhouettes were enhanced by the many cut outs and layered origami detailing on the garments to give a very formal look to the creations.

Creating drama on the catwalk were the cream and brown evening dress with ruffles, an overlapped cut-out dress, the silk shirt with leather sleeves, the petalled multilayer brown organza dress, the blue leather jacket set with black cut leather skirt and the blue patchwork embroidered dress with multi layers. Two superbly crafted evening gowns ended the show – one in black with a wide layered skirt and embroidered top and the other in burnt gold sheeting with drapes and front slit.

For dramatic haute couture, Shradha Murarka and Ninon Palisse from Vizyon offered mysterious seductive creations with their “Enlightened Shadows” collection.

Volvo Cars Presented the Glamorous Collection by Ritu Beri at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012

Mumbai, Friday, August 3, 2012: Just like the iconic Volvo car, the brand presented the beautiful “Icons of Luxury” collection from Ritu Beri inspired by the glamorous beauties of the ‘50s at the Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012.

Recreating the era of Marilyn Monroe, Ritu’s collection was dedicated to the women of today who live a jet age lifestyle. Working around a soft colour story of cream with hints of red, pink, blue, turquoise and yellow, Ritu added popular weaves like pure cotton and lace which were lavishly embellished with exquisite embroidery.

The show opened with stunning super model, Jesse Randhawa in a Parisian gown extravagantly embellished with flowers and lace and long layered cuffs.

Then came the very trendy denim romper, ecru blouse with long trailing sleeves, the embroidered lehenga with a lace bikini, the denim layered dress, the peplum printed embellished jacket, shorts and skin tight trousers, which set the pace of the show. The cute striking layered ballerina dress with jeans, asymmetric creation with an embroidered biker jacket and floor length net lace coats made the show into a visual delight for the audience.

Jumpsuits were crafted with great embellishments while dresses were seductive in their silhouettes. Tiny faux fur shrugs complemented the ruffled gowns, and gold or silver quilted jackets were the perfect match for the formal evening wear. The two gowns in black and white – one in layers of net and the other with crushed tiers were arrestingly beautiful.

Ritu’s collection featured the dazzling “Blu Jacket” a hallmark of art and luxury, craftily interweaving Volvo Cars’ Scandinavian sophistication and design diva, Ritu Beri’s uber-chic craftwork. She has created the jacket for the final winners from India, to play at the World Final Volvo World Golf Challenge 2012.

Jesse Randhawa ended the show in a sensational black net creation with strategically placed white lace appliqué and a dramatic fabric tasselled trail and boa. Keeping the accessories to just the crochet bonnets with large corsages, the look was feminine, fantastic and totally fabulous.

The silhouettes by Ritu Beri presented by Volvo Cars for the “Icons of Luxury” were elegance personified, offering a very stylish and dramatic option to the modern Indian dresser who aims to make her personal style statement for all occasions.

Nandita and Anuradha Thirani Presented an Ethereal Collection at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012

Mumbai, Friday, August 3, 2012: The mother and daughter duo of Nandita and Anuradha Thirani gave fashion an ethereal touch at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 with their collection called “The Lotus Flower”.

Inspired by the lovely lotus flower the collection’s simplicity and elegance, which will appeal to women with finer tastes was highlighted by the stylish silhouettes. The colour story revolved around the tones of the lotus – as neutrals were gently combined with black, white, grey and nude.

Gold sequinned sheeting played an important role and appeared as patches or for the entire garment while ornate lotus motifs were the striking gold embroidery on most of the garments. Soft jackets, black bias mini skirt, midi jackets, fluid silk palazzos, net blouses, pleated patched net and silk saris, satin harem pants, tiered layered net peplum dresses – the collection was a mix of the most elegant fusion creations.

Sexy organza trousers, a fuchsia poncho, velvet silk panelled voluminous pants, layered side slit wide palazzos and a high collar brocade sherwani with a stunning red lehenga completed this collection which reflected feminine beauty.

The silhouettes were easy and languid, which gave the garments a relaxed appeal. The hand painted foot wear by Spirited-Soles and the specially crafted jewellery by Nishi Murli from Kusum’s collections completed the look.

For a line that has ethereal and glamorous creations, Nandita and Anuradha Thirani’s collection gives the right options.

Payal Singhal Presented the Vibrant Colours of India at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012

Payal Singhal called her collection “India in Colour” and what a fantastic rainbow of hues she presented at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012.

It was a kaleidoscopic journey of fashion that moved from the gorgeous Rajasthani pinks; to the vibrant shades of the North and then onto the gentle tones of the East. Payal’s inspiration was very rustic and earthy as she drew lavishly from Indian Adivasi costumes of Kutch and Orissa with an acid neon palette of cyan, fuchsia, lime, cobalt and indigo which all came together on the ramp. The silhouettes remained oriental with kurtas, kaftans, tunics, dresses, short ghagras and kalidar saris, which glittered with intricate peeta, abhla and zardozi work.

Opening the show with an elegant pink linen colour block long dress, Payal followed it with glamorous cowl maxi with gorgeous gold neck embroidery. Mukaish work was lavishly splashed on pants and dupattas; while the asymmetrical kurtas dazzled with abhla work. The Patiala salwars, silk jodhpurs and Banaras jumpsuits were teamed with kurtas, sherwanis or net asymmetric dresses. The more ornate creations had pretty Keri or tota embroidery that glittered under the spot lights.

The show stoppers were the very sprightly Shibani Dandekar, popular singer, anchor and model, wearing a mirror work asymmetric lehenga with a sexy blouse and the handsome Puneet Pathak, (amazing professional dancer who dazzled audiences in India) wearing an ecru silk kurta and gold Patiala salwars.

Bringing together Indian drama and grandeur, Payal Singhal’s “India in Colour” collection was a feast for the eyes as well as the senses on the ramp.

The clothes had the marked influence of the ancient ruins of the Olmecs, Mayan and Aztec empires along with hints of the rainforests and the beaches of Tulum and Acapulco.

Offering a perfect wardrobe for an Acapulco holiday, Pia’s exotic jungle dresses, sexy swim wear and shorts, breezy sundresses and cool kaftans were part of a colourful collection. The designer also offered versatile jersey dresses; hand embellished cocktail wear in soft pastels and beach shorts with interesting organic bamboo buttons to complete the fun look. The fabrics were organic with cotton, georgette and jersey giving a practical touch to the garments.

Creating the Latino flavour on the ramp, Pia opened with a white embroidered shrug to set the mood of the show. Beadwork was lavishly used for yokes, panels, full dresses as well as the matching beach bags and clutches not to mention the sexy stilettos. The resort prints appeared for spandex jumpsuit, draped dresses, tube sheaths, shorts and shirts.

The evening wear line of will power minis and sexy gowns, some fully encrusted with beads and gold embroidery in the Mexican motifs dazzled on the ramp. Embroidered shorts, figure hugging pants, printed frilly fun blouses and dresses were all ideal for after dark holiday wear.

The three entries for men’s wear followed the theme of the show, with comfy cotton pants, printed shorts, brightly coloured shirts making a relaxed style statement.

For the show stopper Pia had the glamorous star of the hit Bollywood film ‘Dhobi Ghaat’ Monica Dogra dazzling on the ramp in a glamorous fully beaded silver jumpsuit.

For that cool resort wear line that will dazzle on and off the beach, Pia Pauro’s “Espiritu de Mexico” collection offered a perfect holiday package.

Horror Day as James V Hart visit India

Mumbai: August 3, 2012: Veteran filmmaker James V Hart says people in all cultures like to hear stories of vampires or blood sucking ghosts.

‘One of the reasons for this could be that vampires give the concept of eternal life and in some way, all of us want to live forever’ he said.

James said he had noticed very early while researching on vampires that their necks are very sensuous.

He said everyone had an idea of what comprised a horror script: Darkness, anonymity, strong sound effects and background score, an interesting process or approach to death (way of death), a scary location, weird or strange characters, a monster (villain), supernatural mood, some special effects and silence.

Since the most important thing for him was why the audience should care about the story, he made the draft of the script in a way that the audience is always kept in anticipation of what is coming next. Revenge is a very big motivator.

James described some fixed steps or patterns that he followed while writing all his scripts. He ‘Set the World’, thus giving the background of the character.

The first opportunity came when something unexpected happens. For example when the main protagonist gets introduced to a character who will later play an important part in the film.

The second opportunity comes when something happens and it sets the protagonist on a journey – giving him/her a purpose to pursue.

There has to be a Visible Tangible Goal when the protagonist has to fulfill a small goal. Progress and Setbacks come when he is pursuing the goal and is proceeding towards the ultimate aim.

The character is at the top of the ‘mountain’ when he has won against all he odds. He has achieved what he wanted.

But the point of no return comes when something happens suddenly (or he makes a mistake) and he cannot undo it.

The Plan falls apart when the planned strategy does not work and the protagonist starts losing the battle. Bit the Resurrection Opportunity comes when the Protagonist gets an opportunity to make a comeback and win.

This may lead to a Conflict Resolution when the main character comes face to face with the monster or villain. This is a point where he fights the evil, leading to the finale, the satisfying end where there is a very satisfying end. It could be something the audience did not expect with a twist.

Actor Hazel Crowney got more than she bargained for when she took on the role of Ravi Kissen’s love interest in Aparna Hoshing’s Jeena Hai Toh Thok Daal, directed by Manish Vatsalya, but that didn’t stop the actor from enjoying the film in the heartlands of Bihar. A tete-a-tete…

How was it shooting for Jeena Hai Toh Thok Daal?

It was a different experience for me altogether. I saw a different side of Indian people when I went to Bihar. It was interesting…

What interested you at script level?

The setting of the film. It was showing the underworld of India and it was kind of fascinating for me.

How about your character?

There is nothing dramatic about my character, but gets linked to the Bihari people who come to work in her house and their underworld links… I like the element about her interaction with them… The storyline is very dramatic and I chose the film for the same. The story is different, dramatic and exciting.

How is Ravi Kissen as a co-star and director Manish Vatsalya and producer Aparna Hoshing?

The entire cast and crew went an extra mile to ensure comfort and it was really sweet of them to do that. When we shot in Bihar, it was not easy. We shot in actual traditional villages in real settings unlike most films that are shot in sets.

We had an experience with a snake, lots of guns, over 5000 people visiting us on the sets everyday with cows, donkeys and camels… Ravi Kissen I must say was really sweet, nice and helpful even though he is a superstar there and the crowd was coming in droves just to get a glimpse of him.

What was most exciting about the film?

The songs. They were beautiful, amazing, you need to experience and feel the songs…

From home to Mumbai and the Bihar… it has been a long journey for you. Do you miss your family?

Yes, I sure do. We love India so most vacations are spent here, but I go home to England when I get a time. I hail from Morocco but we are settled in England. I cannot force my family to come and settle here. So I also go home to be with them… And yes, it is very very different from Bihar. (smiles)

What next to expect from Hazel Crowney?

Currently, I am shooting for an exciting item song for a film I cannot name, and there is lots of work in the pipeline…
