Hero Hockey India League Trophy Unveiled in New Delhi

New Delhi, 13 January 2013: The Hero Hockey India League Trophy was today unveiled by Managing Director and CEO of Hero MotoCorp Ltd Mr. Pawan Munjal and Hockey India Secretary General & Chairman of Hero Hockey India League Dr. Narinder Batra at The Lalit in New Delhi.

On this occasion, Mr. Pawan Munjal announced the ‘Hero Player of the Tournament’ award of Rs. 25 lakh, which will be given to the best player of the Hero Hockey India League.

Dr Narinder Batra announced that the ‘Upcoming Player of the Tournament” will receive Gurdeep (Ponty) Singh Chaddha Award of Rs 20 Lakh.

There will also be a Fair Play Award.

In every match, the best goal scorer will receive “Hero Goal of the Match Award” of Rs 25,000.

The local franchise will be giving “The Man of the Match Award” and the winner will get Rs. 25,000.

To make the league more interesting, a special prize was announced for the spectators also. Five spectators will be chosen from the match and will be given a chance to participate in the Penalty Shoot-out against goalkeeper of the home team during the break to win Airtel Golden Goal Award of Rs. 10,000 each.

Mr. Pawan Munjal thanked the fans and media for their keen interest in the Hero Hockey India League and said: “Hero Hockey India League will surely bring Indian Hockey to world map and this initiative is a historical moment for all of us. I appreciate Hockey India for this initiative and the media for giving a good coverage to Indian hockey”.

Dr. Narinder Batra announced all the prizes and spoke about the trophy, “In the Hero Hockey India League trophy, a hockey player is emerging from the background. The Indian hockey is also emerging and is entering into a new phase.”

The opening match of the inaugural League will be played between Delhi Waveriders and Jaypee Punjab Warriors at 20:00 hrs on 14 January at MDC National Station in New Delhi. There will be a gala opening ceremony before the start of the first match at 19:00 hrs.

Battle of equals as Hero Hockey India League to begin tomorrow

New Delhi, 13 January 2013: Hockey lovers across the world would be treated to a mouth-watering outlay of high quality hockey with the inaugural edition of the Hero Hockey India League set to kick off with the opening encounter between Delhi Waveriders and Jaypee Punjab Warriors at the Major DhyanChand National stadium here on Monday.

The tournament, conceptualised by Hockey India and sanction by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), will see five teams to compete for top honour.

On paper, there is hardly anything to choose between the five squads that boast of the world’s best 120 players and even the bookmakers would find it difficult to pick a clear favourite at the start of the tournament, which will be played in a home-away format over the next one month.

Each team consists of 14 Indian and 10 foreign players and national coach Michael Nobbs has already underlined the importance of the tournament for the future of Indian hockey saying it would be a great opportunity for youngsters – either playing or watching the league – to learn from the foreign internationals and also rekindle the magic of hockey in India.

And that’s something that the other foreign coaches involved in the tournament feel too.

“This tournament offers some of the young Indian players to rub shoulders with some of the best in the world. Getting the experience for them that will only benefit the game locally. This tournament will be interesting because you are tested by having to use your full squad and plus the quality of the reserve players that is critical,” says Ric Charlesworth, coach of Mumbai Magicians.

Uttar Pradesh Wizards’ Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans feels the five-team city-based HIL will give a big boost to Indian hockey and the event will be a blessing in disguise for the domestic players. “I feel HIL will have a great contribution to the future of Indian hockey. The important thing is that Indian players will get the opportunity to train and play alongside and against the best players in the world. They will learn from them. The most important thing is to learn to develop yourself,” says the Dutchman.

At the same time, none of the think tank is losing focus on the immediate task ahead, which is to win the League.

Delhi Waveriders’ skipper Sardar Singh believes that the experienced players in the squad have a role in driving the team to excel. “The senior players along with the coaches and the chief advisor have already had sessions where we have talked about strategy and game-plans. The onus will be on the players to perform because a coach can only guide us. A K Bansal and AjitPal Singh have a wealth of experience and we are not missing a foreign coach,” Sardar says.

“I am looking forward to working with Ranchi Rhinos as a coach and I am hungry to win this inaugural tournament. India has the best hockey talent available in the world which we will utilise to build a strong team in the inaugural season of HIL,” is how Gregg Clark, puts it.

While national coach Nobbs is already looking at the future, the team management of Delhi Waveriders and Jaypee Punjab Warriors would not want to look beyond the opening round clash as they aim to launch their campaign on a winning note.

All in all, the hockey fans in India are set for an absolute treat for a month, and the show begins on Monday evening.

Delhi Waveriders ready to face Jaypee Punjab Warriors in first match of Hero Hockey India League

New Delhi, 13 January 2013: Delhi Waveriders and Jaypee Punjab Warriors are ready for their opening match of the inaugural season of Hero Hockey India League to be played at Major DhyanChand National Stadium, New Delhi on Monday.

Delhi Waveriders coach AK Bansal focussed on Jaypee Punjab Warriors’ star player Jamie Dwyer and has made strategies around the Australian. “We will try to restrict Jamie at all sides of the ground as he is the key playmaker and very quick on field,” Bansal said in the pre-match press conference.

On the other side, Jaypee Punjab Warriors captain’s key tactic for tomorrow’s match is to stop Sardar Singh. “We will stop Sardar. Delhi Waveriders have strong midfielders and Sardar Singh is the best among them,” Jamie said in the press conference.

As is the case with any major tournament, a good start is always important, and that’s why both the teams would be treating this game as a very important fixture. Winning the opener can raise the confidence of the entire camp, and could take the team to another level altogether.

Skipper Sardar Singh is a big asset for the Delhi team, and the team management would have high hopes from their skipper throughout the campaign. Mumbai’s Yuvraj Walmiki has proven his talent at various levels in the past 18 months, and he would be another player that Jaypee Punjab Warriors would need to watch out for.

The presence of top class foreign players like Nicolas Jacobi, Pirmin Blaak, Lloyd Norris-Jones makes the team even stronger.

Bansal said goalkeeping is one of the strengths of Delhi Waveriders. “Goalkeeping is our strength. In German Nicolas Jacobi and Dutch Pirmin Blaak we have two best goalkeepers in the world,” he said.

On the other side, Jaypee Punjab Warriors is an equally talented team, with a good mixture of Indian and foreign players. Their Australian Skipper Jamie Dwyer is a high quality performer, and so are the other foreign stars like Jaap Stockmann, Mark Knowles, Simon Orchard and Kieran Govers.

Then they have the experienced Indian players like Ignace Tirkey, and Bharat Chetri. The goal-scoring abilities of the likes of SV Sunil, Shivendra Singh and Sukhdev Singh only make Jaypee Punjab Warriors an even more dangerous side. Also, this side is boosted by young talented players such as Gaganpreet Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh and Gurmail Singh.

Barry Dancer, Team Head Coach said, “We have enjoyed one good week of preparation and were very warmly welcomed and supported in Jalandhar, our home base. The team is very strong and well balanced with a good mix of International and Indian players. We are confident to put a tough fight tomorrow.”

Skipper Jamie Dwyer said, “This is a group of brilliant players, and we have used the available time to bond well together on and off the field. Given the different cultures in the group, we have tried to spend time together to know each other. On the field we have tried to keep the combinations right, so that we prepare as best as we can for the first game against Delhi Waveriders.”

EuroSchool promotes arts with ‘Footlights – Children’s Theatre Festival’

The festival is aimed at developing children’s appreciation for the fine arts — both performing and visual

Mumbai, 11 Jan 2013: EuroSchool – a co-educational venture comprising 17 schools across India owned by India’s largest pre-school chain, EuroKids — is hosting a three-day children theatre festival called ‘Footlights’ 11-13 January 2013 at the Kalidas Auditorium in Mulund (West) in Mumbai. The Festival was inaugurated by Bollywood actor Kunal Kapoor.

‘Footlights – The Children’s Theatre Festival’ is an innovative platform for anyone who’s interested in culture and any form of performing or visual arts. It will feature three highly-acclaimed plays for children — Jungle Book on 11th January, ‘Suar Chala Space Ko’ on 12th January and In the Cat House on 13th January.

The plays are curated and performed by a group called ‘Theatre Professionals’ which has been working in young people’s theatre for the last 5 years.

Dr Natasha Mehta, Principal EuroSchool Airoli, said: “At EuroSchools, we always believe in going beyond the school boundaries and reaching out to the community in various ways. The purpose of the three-day theatre festival is to provide children with an experience that will help them develop a love and appreciation for theatre and the fine arts. The kids will be exposed to a rich plethora of both Indian and international drama and the event will provide a fulfilled experience that enables children to make creative connections. It will also provide families with healthy and educational entertainment.“

Speaking at the Inaugural function, Chief Guest, actor Kunal Kapoor, said: “I readily accepted the invitation from EuroSchools when I heard about this event. It is an honour to be able to be part of a platform that encourages and promotes performing arts for kids. Performing arts have also proven to be a boon in helping children overcome anxiety and gain confidence. There is also evidence to suggest that getting involved in music, dance or drama can improve a child’s intelligence levels because they learn so many new skills.”
