Speaking on the occasion, Martin da Costa, CEO of 70 EMG said, “The first India Bike Week in 2013 was a great experience for the six and half thousand Bikers that made it to Goa. This second edition of IBW is a tribute to those pioneers – they believed in IBW, made it to Goa, rode hard, partied and made friends for life. We owe it to them to make IBW 2014 something really special. It starts with getting the whole Brotherhood of Bikers inside the walls of IBW, and it’ll end with greatest celebration of Indian Bikers, and world Biking that we’ve ever seen in India. For me, and for the 10,000 and more Bikers, Festival fans and travellers that will be in Goa for IBW, 17th January 2014 can’t come fast enough.”

Keertan Adyantaya, Managing Director, Fox International Channels said, “IBW 2014 edition builds on 2013’s strengths, and makes the canvas larger. The effort is to bring together the best of the experiences and entertainment that are available across the world, for bikers and bike lovers. This year we have picked and added much more to the IBW experience. We have international biking legends, professional stunt zones. Bike displays, new bike launches and the famous bike build off, on a larger scale. There is also enough to satisfy the overall adrenalin plus entertainment quotient. All this on the 17th & 18th January at Goa for all the bike and festival lovers.”

“We are proud to lead the way for leisure motorcycling in India, and to build up groundbreaking events like India Bike Week for bike enthusiasts nationwide. The response from the first year was overwhelming, with bikers from all over the country coming together irrespective of which type or brand of motorcycle they ride. We are excited to associate with IBW again in January 2014 and hope to welcome a large number of enthusiasts and hundreds of Harley-Davidson owners who all share a common passion for motorcycling. And this year we will proud to showcase one of our newest showrooms in Goa!” said Anoop Prakash, Managing Director Harley-Davidson India.

Facebook page launched to ‘bring home Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade’

39-year-old, Indian diplomat and mother of a young girl, Dr Devyani Khobragade was strip and cavity searched by US Marshals – as admitted by the US State Department and reported by both the US and Indian media, and confined to a cell with drugs addicts and prostitutes.

If this is the courtesy extended to an Indian diplomat (young lady officer representing her country and government) for a technical crime, imagine what would happen to you and me or for that matter Shah Rukh Khan, in the US of A – the land of the free (once upon a time). Though she was released on a bail bond of USD 2,50,000, her diplomatic passport has been impounded and she cannot leave the United States. Was she made an example of for somebody’s political ambitions as reported in the Indian media? Or was there a tinge of racial discrimination in the whole episode?

The Facebook page Indians against ill-treatment of diplomat Devyani Khobragade located at https://www.facebook.com/indians.for.devyani is an effort by content and news website www.newz66.com to bring home our sister and diplomat Devyani Khobragade and protest the strip and cavity search of an Indian lady diplomat by US authorities.

Her alleged crime is a matter of interpretation of the law and the debate whether she should be granted or afforded diplomatic immunity, etc. This FB page protests against the treatment meted out to an educated lady bearing a diplomatic passport who is not a convict or a confirmed or dangerous criminal or known for carrying drugs or cash or arms inside a US facility.

The aim and purpose of this campaign is to bring back our sister and diplomat Dr Devyani Khobragade (whose diplomatic passport has been seized by US authorities) and her young daughter and restore their dignity and the dignity of the nation.

India has the second largest internet or online population in the world. Lets show the US our strength with millions of messages condemning the US action.

Share your views on this page. Stand up for Devyani Khobragade and show your support. Also report on this page any US citizens breaking the Indian law any where in the country….

Shekhar Suman To Mark His Directorial Debut With Romantic Medical Thriller Heartless

The multi-faceted Shekhar Suman is gearing up for the release of his
directorial debut Heartless however, unlike other directors, who often
choose formula films to foray into Bollywood, Shekhar has chosen a path
less travelled.

Heartless is a romatic medical thriller, which deals with a frightening
medical phenomenon called anaesthesia awareness. When asked to shed some
light on the movie and the phenomenon around which it revolves, Shekhar
stated, ³It¹s a hard-core romantic thriller with a medical background. My
film¹s plot revolves around a phenomenon called anaesthesia awareness and
not many people are aware of it.

It’s a very interesting but frightening phenomenon and one out of a 1000
or may be 10,000 patients experience it. When they are anaesthetised,
because of the anaesthesia effect they become unconscious from the
outside, but remain conscious from within, which means you start hearing
sounds in the Operation Theatre and start experiencing the pain. You shout
for help, but no one can hear you. A lot of people I have spoken with have
admitted to the fact that at one time or the other, they have experienced
it, and they only realised it was anaesthesia awareness when I told them
about it, he further added.

When quizzed why he picked up such a different topic for his directorial
debut, the filmmaker said, I chose this topic because I¹m a doctor’s son
so, it was very natural for me to bring forth a topic which is related to
the medical field. Also these days all the films are very similar to each
other in terms of treatment, narration, the way the songs are shot and
fight sequences. In such a situation, it becomes very important for a
filmmaker, if he wants to create an identity for himself, to pick up such
a topic which the audiences have never seen or experienced before and
anaesthesia awareness is a phenomenon not many people are aware of. It’s a very horrifying situation to be in and I hope no one experiences it.

The much-anticipated movie will feature Shekhar’s son Adhyayan Suman as
the protagonist and he will share scree space with stalwarts like Shekhar,
Om Puri, Deepti Naval and Madan Jain in it. Heartless, which is slated to
release on February 7, next year, will mark the acting debut of Ariana
Ayam.

Asia business sentiment falls in Q4 – Thomson Reuters/INSEAD survey

• Sentiment index falls to 62 in Q4 from 66 in Q3

• Biggest risk is global economic uncertainty

• Southeast Asia hit by political crisis, typhoon

• Upbeat sentiment in China and India

Reuters – 18 December 2013

By Joyce Lee

Business sentiment among Asia’s top companies dropped sharply in the fourth quarter, extending last quarter’s declines, with global economic uncertainty and rising costs weighing on the region’s firms, a Thomson Reuters/INSEAD survey showed. The Thomson Reuters/INSEAD Asia Business Sentiment Index fell to 62 in the fourth quarter from 66 in the third quarter of 2013, the lowest reading since the third quarter of 2012. A reading above 50 indicates an overall positive outlook.

Sentiment in Southeast Asia’s $1.5 trillion economy was undermined by political turbulence in Thailand and a typhoon in the Philippines, causing dismal readings of 40 and 58 respectively, which were the lowest for both countries since the poll was first compiled in 2009. Although China and India’s bullish scores of 75 and 82 respectively supported the index, export-driven north Asian economies such as South Korea as well as regional trading hub Singapore also showed weaker readings, underscoring still-anaemic global business conditions.

“The global economic recovery is still very fragile,” Zhang Shiyuan, an economist at Shanghai-based Southwest Securities Co said. “There is a fundamental problem that there’s still too much debt. It’s a time bomb that may be detonated if monetary and fiscal policies don’t coordinate well.”

The survey showed that the auto sector was the most negative with a reading of 33, a sharp drop from 63 in the previous quarter, followed by the food and resources sectors with fourth-quarter scores of 50. The index surveyed more than 100 of the Asia-Pacific region’s top companies including Hyundai Heavy Industries, Fast Retailing and International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) in 11 economies, across sectors including property, financials and tech. The poll, conducted by ThomsonReuters in association with INSEAD, a global management and business school, was compiled between Dec. 2-13. Of the 128 companies that responded, two-thirds reported a neutral outlook while less than 30 percent were positive in their prospects.

SOUTHEAST ASIA HIT, CHINA & INDIA SUPPORT

Among ASEAN countries that had remained comparatively upbeat earlier this year, Malaysia remained the only bright spot with a score of 75, up from 69 in the last quarter. In contrast, companies in Thailand were the most negative in Asia with a 40 index reading, plunging from 71 in the previous quarter as signs of prolonged political uncertainty due to anti-government protests against Yingluck Shinawatra’s ruling party hit business sentiment.

Corporate sentiment in the Philippines tumbled to 58 from the maximum score of 100 in the previous quarter due to the devastating effects of typhoon Haiyan in early November that killed more than 5,200 people and destroyed an estimated 24 billion pesos ($543.60 million) in crops and infrastructure.

Among north Asian economies, Japan retreated to a fourth-quarter score of 55 from 63 in the previous quarter as the buzz around Abenomics deflated. The outlook in South Korea remained steady at a neutral 50.

A glimmer of hope came from China, the world’s second-largest economy, which showed an uptick in fourth-quarter sentiment to 75 after holding steady at 50 earlier this year. “The companies appear to be upbeat on the expectation that overseas demand for Chinese exports will improve. Hopes stemming from the government’s reform measures announced in Q3, and rising income levels that could drive spending, are also causes for positive sentiment,” said Cui Hongmei, a China market analyst at Seoul-based Daewoo Securities Co.

India’s bullish outlook also supported the index, with a fourth-quarter score of 82 compared to 67 in the previous quarter as improving manufacturing conditions in the 1.3 billion-strong country shrunk the trade deficit by 23 percent between April-November 2013.

RISING COSTS WEIGH ON DEFENSIVES

Broken down by sector, builders in Asia were the most bullish with a maximum reading of 100 for the second consecutive quarter, followed by pharmaceuticals and property sectors with readings of 75. Defensive sectors such as food and retail were both down from the previous quarter to readings of 50, as companies cited rising costs as their biggest risk.

C-grade set adult thriller Miss Lovely finally granted ‘A’ certificate.

Reworked out of a shelved documentary on illegal sex-horror films in the lower depths of Bollywood, Miss Lovely by Ashim Ahluwalia, is a startling piece of cinema that explores a sordid tale of betrayal and doomed love. His first narrative feature, the film is an ode to renegade film making that flouts genre conventions to conjure up a world that very few of us have access to.

The film follows Vicky and Sonu Duggal, played by Anil George and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, two brothers struggling to produce illegal sex-horror films in the mid 1980’s. It explores the intense and mutually destructive relationship between the Duggal brothers and a struggling actress Pinky, played by Niharika Singh. Besides winning the Best Film Award at the 14th Mumbai International Film Festival, the ‘Reliance Media Works CreaTech (Creativity & Technology) Award’ and Best Feature Film Award at the 11th Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and the official selection of Un Certain Regard in Cannes Film Festival, globally, Miss Lovely has fascinated just about everybody. Deconstructing the morally bankrupt industry one fragment at a time, Miss Lovely can be easily misunderstood for its original storytelling and controversial content. Jonathan Romney of Sight & Sound described the film as “A shock to the system – an Indian film like I’d never seen.” Constantly asserting its own originality, the film juggles spools of film and narrative, reality and fantasy that is almost akin to contemplative art. It has been compared to Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express and Dario Argento’s Suspiria.

Variety’s Alissa Simon avers, “something new in Indian film making, neither Bollywood nor traditional art cinema, the picture provides a unique, immersive experience…one that owes as much to dock and experimental filmmakers as to Scorsese, Welles and von Sternberg, plunging viewers into the characters’ social milieu.” While ‘Film Comment’s’ Gavin Smith felt that the film was the strongest in the Un Certain Regard section writing. “I hope we do hear more from Indian director Ashim Ahluwalia, whose lively, fast-and-loose Miss Lovely, about two brothers toiling in the world of Bollywood’s B-movie and soft core porn production in the Eighties, had an off-kilter, at times delirious first hour and then settled into a pungent story of jealousy, betrayal, and doomed love.”

Libertas Film Magazine’s Joe Bendel noted, “Straddling genres, Ahluwalia toys with crime story elements, but essentially tells a Cain and Abel tale, skewering India’s celebrity-obsessed culture and sexual mores along the way. Stylistically, he spans the gamut from triply disorienting to in-your-face naturalism. This is kitchen-sink film making at its most relentlessly indie. Part expose and part fall-from-grace epic, Miss Lovely is highly recommended for those who simply love films about filmmaking.” The New York Times’ Joan Dupont profiled Miss Lovely and the directorship Ahluwalia in a piece titled “Mumbai in the Bad Old Days”.

Director Ashim Ahluwalia was surprised by the excitement the film has generated worldwide, from being an official entry to Cannes and Toronto to winning numerous “Best Film” awards. “For the West, Indian cinema is either Satyajit Ray or Bollywood. Miss Lovely, on the other hand, is a mix of so many different genres, with a storytelling style and atmosphere that is pretty wild. It sometimes moves like a novel with multiple characters and side stories. I didn’t expect people to react to it so enthusiastically.” The ‘A’ certification doesn’t matter for this director either. “The story does take place in the dark, lower depths of the industry, so this is not the kind of space that we usually depict in our films. It is a very adult film that explores sexuality and violence and the things that people do to each other when they are struggling to make it in a city. I’m happy that the censor board didn’t ban it and, instead, eventually opted to grant it very few cuts.”

Miss Lovely is all set for a January 17 India release.
