Cannes Embraces Gangs of Wasseypur Amid International Media Frenzy

The French Riveira was transformed into rural India on the 21st of May 2012, as Gangs Of Wasseypur, the much-anticipated film by acclaimed director Anurag Kashyap, was celebrated at a special star-studded cocktail party, hosted by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, to honour its inclusion in the prestigious 65th Cannes Film Festival’s Director’s Fortnight – the first time that a mainstream Bollywood film has had this honour.

Hailed as one of the most happening Bollywood parties of Cannes this year, gangs of curious guests at the cocktail party, which was held at the stunning NFDC Indian Pavilion, were given red branded gamchchas (bandanas) which are symbolic to the film. The international media, film executives, and VIPs took to wearing the gamchchas with pride to demonstrate their appreciation for the film. The gamchchas projected an earthy vibe of the film, which deals with 60 years of a feuding family’s life in the coal mining town of Dhanabad in Jarkhand, India.

Attendees were also welcomed by a champagne cocktail reception and treated to mouth-watering Indian delicacies, which brought a taste of India to Cannes.

Anurag Kashyap and the film’s actress and rising Bollywood beauty Huma Qureshi, who experienced Cannes’ very own monsoon, greeted the flurry of media who interviewed them about their upcoming Indian blockbuster.

Gangs Of Wasseypur, a mainstream Indian film, combines clever filmmaking with a powerful, high-concept and entertaining plot, with revenge at its core. Accentuated by strong performances by a talented and eclectic cast comprising of Hindi cinemas finest, Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Richa Chadda, the film is cleverly told in two parts. Gangs Of Wasseypur represents the brave new Indian cinema breaking the cliches and conventions, something which Anurag Kashyap has come to be known for. The film is presented by one of India’s leading integrated film companies, Viacom18 Motion Pictures and produced by AKFPL.

The world premiere of Gangs Of Wasseypur will be held on the 22nd of May 2012 at the ‘Directors Fortnight’ at the Marriott, Cannes. Other highlights for the film during the festival week will include a debate forum on Bollywood’s changing place within Indian cinema on the 23rd of May.


Poet-painter gets Sohail Khan’s support, gives proceeds for charity

Nature has always intrigued Dr.Nandita Desai, a painter-poet-educationist rolled into one. Hence, Nandita has captured all that she loves in various shadows of Green. Whether it be the vales, the flowers, the trees, the plants, the shrubs or the occasional creeper that tries to attract your attention with its curves, Nandita has used the brush as a magic wand to preserve those moments of time in frozen frames.

Said Nandita, “Earth,to me, is a living organism… ever changing,ever colourful and embodying the celebration of life. Nature vows me and inspires my creative spirit.Its energy leads me on an artistic journey.The idea is to look at what we see as nomal today may not be there at all tomorrow. If we need to have a tomorrow, we must protect our environment today,” she reasons. The proceeds go to charity towards Save Earth NGO and the elderly.


Benaras becomes Bombay!

The artist, simplistic that he is, preferred to let his works do the talking. And went about playing host instead of basking in all the adulation.


Nana Patekar’s loss is Prakash Raj’s gain!

There was a strong buzz that Nana Patekar was approached to play the main villain opposite Aazaan-fame star Sachiin Joshi for his forthcoming film Mumbai Mirror.

But inside sources reveal that Prakash Raj has been signed on for the pivotal role. The powerhouse performer, who happens to be the flavour of the year with Singham, is also very excited about his role in the film. And why not! After all the Jaykant Shikre of Singham will now get to play Shetty; the most dreaded character in Mumbai Mirror.

But instead of a righteous cop like Bajirao Singham, Shetty will clash with the raw energy of a quirky whimsical and corrupt cop played by Sachiin Joshi.

The realistic commercial potboiler mirrors the Mumbai underbelly and revolves around the nexus between powerful corrupt dance bar lords and the Mumbai Police. Directed by Ankush Bhatt, of Bhindi Bazaar Inc. fame, the movie has some scintillating music by Anand Raj Anand. It’s expected to release in September 2012.

Kashmera Shah’s play goes the Hollywood way!

Many movies have shot two to three different endings and climax sequences and decided which one to add in their projects at the last minute.

It’s a common practice in Hollywood to shoot two movie endings, take the opinions of focus groups and a cross section of people and retain the one more accepted. Bollywood too has caught up with a similar trend off late.

But what surprises us now is that Kashmera Shah’s latest play Tere Ghar Ke Samne has adopted a similar practice, albeit with a difference.

Over a few summer Sundays spread across weeks, Kash’s play has been running to packed houses at various theatre outlets, while experimenting with not two, but three different endings. Almost every week, the viewers get to see a different climax to her play. Whoa!

What’s more! What started as a one-off experiment is now becoming the norm. “Earlier we thought we’d do this for a couple of weeks and then stick to the end the audiences find the best. But this experimenting process gets the actors and audiences alike so kicked, that we are continuing with it,” reveals Kash.

Thanks to this, a select percentage of audiences have even returned for an extra round of the play, just to see how it will end in their second outing. We are often amazed how you manage to begin such whacky trends Kash, but it’s cool as long as you continue to amuse and entertain. More power to you and your wackiness girl!


Evelyn Sharma gets a Vidya Balan connect with Euphoria!

Even before actress Vidya Balan made it big in Bollywood, she was a known face in the industry, thanks to her association with the band Euphoria. Now, newbie Evelyn Sharma is hoping, the same magic will rub on her as well.

The half-German-half-Indian international supermodel, who is working in a couple of Hindi flicks, including the Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone-starrer Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, says, “When I was approached to perform for a Euphoria video opposite Palash Sen, I was very excited.”

“They’ve introduced many popular actresses, including Vidya Balan and Neha Dhupia. Moreover, I’m a huge fan of rock music, so I was more than thrilled to do a slow rock song video with them,” she adds. Like most Euphoria numbers earlier, the recently released video is also getting rave reviews.

Meanwhile, apart from Ayan Mukerji’s Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani under Karan Johar’s banner Dharma Productions, Evelyn’s is also gearing up for Manish Tiwary’s Issaq opposite Prateik Babbar and veteran filmmaker Pramod Chakravorty’s grandson Prateek Chakravorty’s debut film From Sydney With Love.


Rick Baker’s retro creative aliens

The franchise Men in Black is often associated with the creative aliens that its shows- tiny, slimy, sticky, eyes-popping aliens! The man behind creating such wondrous aliens is Makeup artist Rick Baker. Baker is associated with the past two movies of the franchise and will be back with such horrendous aliens in the third movie of the trilogy!

The movie Men in Black 3 of Sony Picture’s releases all over India on 25th May and will be in 3D.The movie brings back the two well-known agents-Agent J and Agent K. This time around J comes across a piece of news that makes him take a time jump. J lands in the era of 1960’s where the aliens aren’t as good as they ought to be! The shocking colour combos and the hippie culture has influenced these aliens too.

How does Baker bring forth these aliens of 1960’s is something we will see when the movie releases.But talking about the challenge of creating such monsters Baker says, “It is fun working for such franchise where not only do I get to show my creativity with aliens of 2012 but also get to create the aliens of 1960’s.The aliens of 1960’s with big eyes and wearing helmets on their heads”

Talking about the versatility of Baker, Will Smith says, “The thing I really love is the retro aliens. I thought that was an absolute stroke of genius. The aliens are designed from the science fiction perspective of the 60s. You know, Ray Bradburry, Isaac Asimov, “Star Trek” on TV, you know what I mean. Rick Baker designed each alien with that very awkward, peculiar sense of humor from the 60’s sci-fi perspective. The aliens capture a texture, a wonderful sense of humor, and a clever inventiveness that lends itself to this world”

The same testimony comes from the Producer Parkes. He says “It was Baker’s idea to have a little fun in his alien designs. He came in one day and said, ‘What if the aliens in 1969 were 1960s aliens, retro-futuristic aliens that reflected our collective memory of that time and a more innocent approach to sci-fi?’ It was just such a charming idea, and everyone went for it.”

Charming or not, the creativity is sure to appease the audience.But how very appeasing will it be will only revealed once the movie releases in India on 25th May.

Gangs of Wasseypur’s World Premiere Opens to Packed Houses At 65th Cannes Film Festival

Yesterday, Tuesday 23rd May saw eager crowds line the streets outside the world renowned JW Marriot for the exclusive world premiere of Gangs Of Wasseypur, the first mainstream Bollywood film to be selected for the Director’s Fortnight. Onlookers screamed as the Belles of Bollywood sashayed down the red carpet and dazzled the fans with their jaw-dropping floor length gowns. Once again the supporters of the most highly anticipated Indian film of the 65th Cannes Film Festival proudly donned their statement red gamchchas as they took their seats in a fully packed 800 strong capacity screening.
