Was Ali Zafar’s Phalke Award snatched because of his Pakistani origin?

It has been reported that someone at the Tulip Star Hotel in Juhu, Mumbai, snatched the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award trophy from the hands of Pakistani singer-turned-actor Ali Zafar and ran away with it.

Which raises the pertinent question – was it because he is a Pakistani actor working in the Indian film industry? “In any story of scandal such as this, its not the who, how, where, what and when, which is as important as the ‘why’,” remarks Bollywood PR guru Dale Bhagwagar. “If that ‘why’ can be answered in this sorry scenario too, the riddle can also be solved,” he adds. Dale has known many celebrities who have gone through similar helpless circumstances in huge crowds and sympathizes with Ali Zafar.

Apart from having handled the media for top of the line Bollywood names like Hrithik Roshan, Govinda, Shilpa Shetty and Priyanka Chopra earlier, the publicist has also looked after the PR for Pakistani superstar Meera for quite some time.

Even Pakistani starlet Veena Malik gained popularity in India when she got invited on India’s biggest reality show Bigg Boss because of a controversy with one of Dale’s clients, actress Neetu Chandra. On the show, she attracted further notoriety when she cootchie-cooed with Ashmit Patel, another of the same publicist’s clients during Bigg Boss.

Ali Zafar made his India debut with the successful comedy Tere Bin Laden, and followed it up with another hit in Yash Raj Films’ Mere Brother Ki Dulhan co-starring Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif. His last film London, Paris, New York also received critical acclaim.

Some of the other prominent awardees at the 143rd Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards included actors Amitabh Bachchan, Tanuja, Vinod Khanna, Ajay Devgn (Singham), Vidya Balan (The Dirty Picture), Waheeda Rehman, Saira Banu – Dilip Kumar, Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar (Bade Achhe Lagte Hain), Farhan Akhtar (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara), Prakash Raj, ace journalist Chaitanya Padukone, producer Ekta Kapoor and singer Gurdas Maan.

Indian Oprah, Satyamev Jayate evokes mixed response!

The sensitive, yet harsh reality of female infanticide in India became the first issue Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan tackled with his TV debut Satyamev Jayate (Truth Alone Prevails) on Star Plus this week.

The premier episode evoked mixed response with thousands immediately taking to social media to voice their opinions. Many compared it to the Oprah Winfrey Show of the West, but remained unsure how it will shape up in the times to come.

“Aamir Khan trying to be the Indian Oprah! Disappointing. He is sooo fake,” posted Apar Dham who has studied media. K Himaanshu Shukla of Scrutiny blog found the show, “Aamir Khan’s emotional atyachaar”. He posted a status message saying, “I was expecting something different.”

But not everyone was skeptical of Aamir’s ‘crusade pop-pourri’. Filmmaker Ramesh Taurani praised the actor on his Blackberry Messenger calling him “the best”.

Abhigyan Jha, the producer of the online show Jay Hind, said the show reminded him of the days when he “sat writing Rajani with the belief that it would change the country”. He added on Twitter that he wasn’t a fan of Aamir, but thought it is a show “well done”. “If I were him, I would have tried to do a similar show. Somethings have to be done,” added Abhigyan.

“Satyamev Jayate is the Naya Bharat after Mahabharat,” wrote producer Manish Goswami. “Hats off to Aamir Khan for walking the road less traveled and attempting to serve humanity by inspiring millions,” said film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi on Facebook.

Bollywood PR guru Dale Bhagwagar wasn’t yet sure if Aamir’s crusade through the show could effectively turn into a movement. However, on a positive note, Dale concluded, “The fact that Aamir has managed to make a hardcore entertainment channel see reason to spend their crores on an idealistic cause, should be enough to cheer us up for now.”

Annu Kapoor throws a frivolous allegation at Priyanka Chopra!

Following various reports about the film industry sidelining Priyanka Chopra, about her PR machinery crossing lines, and about her alleged affair with Shah Rukh Khan putting her career in jeopardy; some odd balls are now coming out with fresh allegations on the cornered actress.

One such person is Annu Kapoor. In a recent interview, the veteran actor is reported to have said that Priyanka, who was his co-star in the critically-acclaimed 7 Khoon Maaf, did not take her role in the film seriously.

The movie portrayed the actress aging from 20 to 65 years, during which she goes through seven marriages. Annu who had played the role of one of Priyanka’s seven husbands, supposedly does not think high of the actress.

Annu stated, “I have been in the industry for 30 years and have worked with some big actors. But when I worked with Priyanka in 7 Khoon Maaf, I felt she didn’t take the role seriously.”

But out of the blue, Priyanka seems to have found an unlikely supporter-in-shining-armour in her ex-publicist Dale Bhagwagar. Dale, who worked with Priyanka during her initial days in filmdom, and also handled PR for two of her films including Plan and Don, is by now considered a PR guru in Bollywood. Hearing about Annu Kapoor’s allegation, he tweeted, “Priyanka Chopra not being serious about acting sounds frivolous.”

“Just look at the girl’s career graph. Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Aitraaz, Bluffmaster!, Taxi No. Nau Do Gyarah, Krrish, Don, Fashion, Dostana, Kaminey, 7 Khoon Maaf, Don 2 and Agneepath – Brand Priyanka has contributed to more than a dozen hits in a decade; a pace, consistency and bankability unmatched by most of the other heroines in the industry,” Dale pointed out.

“Could all this be possible if she wasn’t dedicated or passionate towards her work,” asked the PR specialist. So true! We get the point and rest the case!

Katrina Kaif and Meera blacked out by moral police in Pakistan!

Banners and billboards featuring various advertisements, including ones of Indian actress Katrina Kaif and Pakistani superstar Meera, have reportedly been blacked out by Pakistani ‘moral police’ in Karachi.

According to a report in The Express Tribune, hoardings of a Lux advertisement featuring Meera and a Veet advertisement with Katrina Kaif have been replaced by black banners which scream “Sell clothes, not your honour.”

The protest campaign has been attributed to unheard of groups such as the Women Education Society and the Women Professional Forum, adds the report. Their main objection appears to be over ‘immorality’, since the advertisements feature female models in sleeveless or backless clothes with risqué necklines.

Reacting to this, Meera’s Bollywood publicist Dale Bhagwagar who has earlier, also handled the PR for Katrina’s debut film Boom said, “Moral policing the roads in the age of the internet is like asking your toddler not to speak to the neighboring toddler because she has a doll resembling a sex toy. It just doesn’t work.”

“In any case, showing off a little skin with a sleeveless blouse or a backless dress, couldn’t be reason enough to black out posters and hoardings,” added the PR specialist, suggesting that the protesters “grow up.”

Ever since I’d dreamt of becoming an actor, I’d hoped that someday I too would win a National award. It was surreal being there.. I was nervous as hell and the evening is a blur but the only thing that matters is that I got the National award and that’s a dream come true -Vidya Balan.
