Hrithik to skip Holi celebrations!

Bollywood might be known for its famous Holi parties, but this year, Hrithik Roshan will refrain from joining in the revelry.

“Hrithik won’t be celebrating Holi as a mark of solidarity with those who are suffering from the acute water shortage in Maharashtra. Instead, he will only use only a small amount of gulaal to apply a shagun tika as part of the traditional ritual,” says an insider close to him.

According to the source, Hrithik feels that even dry colours should be used sparingly. If used in excess, they require a lot of water to be washed off, thus defeating the purpose of water conservation.

The insider adds, “Like Hrithik, even the other members of the Roshan family will keep the celebrations low-key. They will take part in the morning puja and then spend some some quiet time together.

Ranbir – Deepika play Holi in Advance!

Looks like for Ranbir Kapoor, it’s festive season all year long! While most of us are still waiting for tomorrow to bring out the colours, RK and his group of friends got into celebratory mode a couple of months in advance.

Sources say Ranbir and the cast and crew of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani indulged in some fun moments while shooting for one of the film’s music tracks – Balam Pichkari!

An onlooker says, “ The Holi song Balam pichkari was shot at Film City a few days ago. Once the shoot was over, Ranbir decided to drag everyone to the pool. His co-stars Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapoor were already wet.” We hear, the first to be pulled in was Remo, who choreographed the song, followed by director Ayan Mukerji.

“ Ranbir managed to pull in several others too. Within no time all the dancers in the song and the technicians were fully wet. With the entire crew in the pool, it was like an actual Holi” adds the source.

Shankaradev Utsav – A Tribute to Shankardev the master and creator of the rare Assamese dance form – Sattriya Nritya

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e8/Satriya_dance_performance_at_Guwahati_Rabindra_Bhawan.JPG/220px-Satriya_dance_performance_at_Guwahati_Rabindra_Bhawan.JPGWhat – Shankaradev Utsav: Tribute to the legend Shankardev organized by the Pratishruti Foundation

Where – YB Chavan Hall, Entry Free

When – 30th March 2013, 7:00 pm.

Sattriya, or Sattriya Nritya, is one among eight principal classical Indian dance traditions. It is a 500 year old dance form. Where as some of the other traditions have been revived in the recent past, Sattriya has remained a living tradition since its creation by the founder of Vaishnavism in Assam, the great saint Srimanta Sankardeva, in 15th century Assam.

Sankardeva created Sattriya Nritya as an accompaniment to the Ankia Naat (a form of Assamese one-act plays devised by him), which were usually performed in the sattras, as Assam’s monasteries are called. As the tradition developed and grew within the sattras, the dance form came to be called Sattriya Nritya. Today, although Sattriya Nritya has emerged from within the confines of the sattras to a much wider recognition, the sattras continue to use the dance form for ritualistic and other purposes for which it was originally created circa 500 years ago.It also has recently become one of the Indian Classical Dances.

Profile of Sattriya Dance and Shankardev

Shrimanta Shankardev established the Ekasaran Naam Dharma, a simple way of life based on the philosophy of Shrimad Bhagavat. This all- inclusive movement, which brought together different castes and creeds, paved the way for a harmonious society. More than 500 years back Shankardev tried to get rid of the caste system. His philosophy was to do away with the extraneous customs that tied us down to the material world and make our thoughts more lofty which enabled us to be sensitive to all living and non-living things around us. He laid more stress on the “word”- “akshara” because he believed it to be the only imperishable form in this world and hence placed Bhagavat on the highest platform. He considered our hearts to be a temple by itself where we hold the image of Krishna and spread love and bliss.

Although during his lifetime Shankardev faced a lot of criticism and opposition both from the brahminical-priestly sector and from the ruling kings, he continued his work and won over one and all through his vast knowledge of the scriptures. If on one hand the priests had to accept defeat, on the other hand the kings surrendered to his knowledge.

As a state Assam saw the advent of a literary and cultural renaissance. Shankardev’s contribution to his motherland has been absolute. He was a social reformer, a cultural and literary icon, a selfless crusader of peace and harmony. He established the “Sattra” which became the centre for creativity and preservatory of heritage. Sattriya is the only classical dance form in the country which has its roots outside the temple, although the philosophy remains the same. Shankardev is the only saint-poet whose works go beyond compositions to being a way of life. He was a poet, dramatist, singer, dancer, yoga expert, percussionist, painter, craftsman, actor and philosopher. Such a personality whose works spreads across such a vast canvas is very rare in the world. The only name that we have to take with the same breath as Shankardev is Madhavdev. Madhavdev’s contribution to Shankardev’s work and philosophy has been equal to his Guru.

Profile of Prateesha Suresh:

Prateesha Suresh started her training in dance at an early age. Born and brought up in Assam, she went to Rukmini Devis Kalakshetra, College of Fine Arts, to study Bharatanatyam. After her training she returned to her hometown and started working on Sattriya, the classical dance of her state which had yet to be recognized as a classical dance. This spurned her to work on the dance form in greater detail which included the style, music, costumes and literature. The bigger challenge was to present the dance as a solo dance form as Sattriya dance has evolved from a dramatic representation.

From 1989, Prateesha’s efforts have been not only to establish Sattriya as a classical dance but also to bring forth the works of Srimant Shankardev. She started Pratishruti Foundation in 2008 with the objective of propagating the teachings of Shrimanta Shankardev. Apart from dance performances, lecture-demonstrations and dance classes the foundation has organized events to fulfill it’s objectives. In 2009 and 2010 the foundation held Pratishruti Dance Festival in Guwahati. In 2011 it organised Shankardev Birth Centenary Festival in Mumbai in collaboration with NCPA.

In all these events the foundation gave opportunities to young artists from Assam and presented various dance compositions on Shankardev’s and Madhavdev’s compositions. Prateesha Suresh, the founder-director of the foundation and a Sattriya artist, composed and choreographed for the festivals. The foundation also felicitated senior artists in the field of Sattriya in acknowledgment of their work.

The Shankardev Utsav is another step towards bringing out the ancient art to the connoisseurs of New Delhi. Through the festival the foundation feels privileged to support the Mask Art of Assam and bringing an unique performance highlighting the various sentiments of Bhakti seen through the compositions of the legendary Gurus. Dancers of other dance styles have come forward to pay their tribute to the works of the saint-duo.

GSMA CALLS FOR REDUCTION IN SPECTRUM RESERVE PRICES

25 March 2013, India : Anne Bouverot, Director General, GSMA, offered the following statement in anticipation of the expected 1800, 900 and 800 MHz spectrum auction in India later this month:

“The absence of bidders for the 1800and 900MHz and a lone bidder in 800MHzfor the spectrum auction earlier this month, which includes frequencies that remained unsold fromthe November 2012 auction, is a clear signal that mobile operators are not willing to pay unreasonably high prices for spectrum. The GSMA reiterates its call to the Indian Government not to use spectrum as a means to raise short-term revenues and instead to significantly reduce the proposed reserve prices for the upcoming auction. Focus should be on the longer term and creating a healthy business environment where the mobile industry can invest with confidence.

“Acquiring spectrum is only the first step before making the necessary investment in network deployment to deliver mobile services to consumers. Unreasonably high reserve prices lead to spectrum remaining unsold, delays in the delivery of mobile services and ultimately, an increase in consumer tariffs. The multiplier effects of increased mobile penetration are well documented; a recent GSMA study shows that a 10 per cent expansion in mobile penetration increases productivity by 4.2 percentage points1. These benefits will be particularly felt in a country like India, which has a significant and largely unconnected rural population.

“We call on the Indian Government to restore a sustainable environment for investment in telecoms and continue the success story of mobile, which has already had a transformative impact on the country’s society and economy over the past decade.”
