23,000 to run in TCS World 10K; super fast field of elite athletes to challenge course records

Bangalore, May 8: It’s a full house at the TCS World 10K Bangalore 2013 to be run on May 19, 2013 and the event has also attracted a super fast field of foreign athletes, who will be aiming to set new course records for men and women. This was announced by Dilip Jayram, CEO of Procam International, the promoters of the event, along with Nagraj ijari, VP and Global Head Hi-Tech and Professional Services Business Segment, Tata Consultancy Services, the title sponsor,

The TCS World 10K on May 19 will see total participation from around 23,000, prompting the promoters to shut registrations.

The Open 10K Run and the 10K Challenge, which also includes the Nike College Face-off and the DHL Corporate Challenge, has received around 11,000 entries, while the Majja Run a whopping 11,500. The Senior Citizens’ Run will have around 1000, while the event for the Champions With Disability will see 450 participants, a huge increase from 91 in the last edition. Besides these races, the feature events of the day will be the World 10K for elite men & women and the Nation’s Challenge.

Super-fast field of elite athletes: A highly competitive field of elite athletes has been put together for the TCS World 10K Bangalore 2013 by Global Sports Communication (GSC), the event’s elite athlete coordinators with an aim at lowering the existing course records. The men’s record stands at 27.51 minutes, set by Eritrea’s Zersenay Tadese in 2008, while the women’s mark stands at 31.58, set by Ethiopian Yimer Wude in 2010. An added incentive of USD 7500 is up for grabs for the new course record.

Leading the field at the Kanteerava Stadium’s start line on Sunday, May 19 will be the two newly crowned World Cross Country Champions, Japhet Korir among men and double World Cross Country Champion Emily Chebet on the women’s side.

According to Jos Hermens of GSC, besides Emily, the other strong contenders in the women’s race will be the defending champion Helah Kiprop of Kenya and the course record holder Yimer Wude Ayalew. However, they can expect to be given a run for their money by Kenyans Pascalia Kipkoech, the 2nd fastest girl over 10km in 2012, and Lucy Kabuu, who many insiders believe is the strongest lady among long distance running at this moment. Also in the field will be the young Kenyan Valentine Kipketer, who demolished the field while lowering the course record by two and a half minutes and winning the 2013 Mumbai Marathon

The strong men’s field includes 14 athletes who have run the 10 km below 28.00 on either track or road and poses a strong challenge to the existing course record.

Leading the pack will be current World Cross Country champion Japhet Korir who, besides having finished three times in the top five of various World Cross Championships, also won the 2013 Würzburg Residenzlauf 10km in Germany. Japhet will face competition from fellow Kenyans Moses Masai, Daniel Salel, Silas Kipruto, Nicholas Kipkemboi and rising Ethiopian star Brihanu Legese, to name a few. Posing a threat to the Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes will be Ukranian Sergiy Lebid and Great Britain’s Scott Overall, besides Ecuador’s Byron Piedra.

The occasion was also used to announce the Get Active Expo, which will be held at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium from May 10 to 12, 2013.

The Expo will be on between 11.00 am to 7.00 pm on all the three days and will also be the venue for all confirmed participants from Bengaluru and its suburbs to come and collect their running numbers along with the goodie bags.

Dekh Indian Circus’ Nawazuddin is equally convincing off-screen

Nawazuddin Siddiqui who packs in a punch with every on-screen appearance, has evidently managed to convince people off-screen as well.

On the sets of ‘Dekh Indian Circus’ presented by Imtiaz Ali, the actor who loves getting under the skin of his character ,was dressed in his character of a Rajasthani man, wearing the traditional outfit of the place – And while the actor went to wear the same get-up during the film’s lunch break ,the staff members mistook him for a local and failed to recognize him.

Talking about the incident Nawazuddin says, “I was dressed in my character, wearing dhoti-kurta and jewellery just to get the feel of the character. I looked so convincing that at the lunch table the staff member thought that I was a local villager. He pushed me off and refused to serve me food.”

Expressing how he reacted to this incident, the actor says, “In a normal situation, such incidents may make the stars angry, but I was happy that my character managed to look convincing.”

‘GAY’TEWAY TO BOLLYWOOD!

Depiction of gay characters in Bollywood continues to be steeped in stereotype, even as realism’s struggling to rear its head.

At a recent Gay and Lesbian Center gala held in LA, studio mogul (Sony Pictures) Amy Pascal, in her speech highlighted the stereotypical depiction of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community) characters in Hollywood films. She insisted that studio bosses scrutinise and make an attempt to eliminate gay slurs.

She said, “How about next time, when any of us are reading a script and it says words like fag, faggot, homo, dyke — take a pencil and just cross it out.” The studio honcho also pointed out that not every gay character on screen needed to be defined by his or her sexuality. She quipped, “Can’t we depict men and women who just so happen to be gay — perhaps a lawyer or soldier or business executive or scientist or engineer…”

While the issue was raised about the depiction of LGBT characters in Hollywood, things are as bad, if not worse in Bollywood.

No laughing matter this!

Filmmakers in popular cinema here continue to use characters of alternate sexuality seeped in stereotypical images as crutches to provide comic relief. Few will forget Kantaben’s shocked expression on seeing Saif Ali Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in bed together in Kal Ho Naa Ho or Abhishek Bachchan’s effeminate act in Bol Bachchan. John Abraham’s flirty act with Boman Irani’s character in Dostana had the audience in splits, all at the expense of the gay characters/community.

More recently, Rishi Kapoor’s character in Student of the Year lusting after Ronit Roy’s character, was used to provide laughs. Insensitive? Yes, says fashion editor and gay activist Sourendra Kumar Das. He asserts that more often than not, mainstream popular cinema is cruel while depicting alternate sexuality, “Many of our films legitimise gay slurs. While it would be okay to show funny people who happen to be gays, it’s marginalising the LGBT community by making their sexuality the laughing matter, which is what happens in our movies and that is not amusing.”

Shun stereotypes
Das continues, “Making jokes at the expense of alternate sexual preferences is the norm in Bollywood. Several films here often have that one ‘gay’ character in a two- minute role — either having a crush on the hero or being over the top effeminate, shown biting the lip, dressed outlandishly and lusting after another guy. Films like Girlfriend, also stereotype lesbians. This creates a wrong perception about people from the LGBT community.
One almost always expects a man with alternate sexuality to be effeminate with peculiar mannerisms, which is not really the case.”

Need to normalise!
Echoing Pascal’s words, Das says that the need of the hour is to normalise characters shown belonging to this community, “A segment of the industry might feel that by depicting such characters in their films they have actually brought them out of the closet. This is not completely untrue, as people today are at least talking about it. However, what would really make the right impact is showing such characters as normal as possible. Why can’t it be the hero’s hunky best friend who happens to be gay and not be the laughing stock of the buddy group?”

Switching tracks
To be fair, there has been some change in the manner a gay character is depicted in our films, but those have mostly been seen in alternate cinema. While the mainstream filmmakers continue to stereotype characters with different orientation, filmmakers like Onir and actor-director Rituparno Ghosh (Memories in March) are making changes through their cinema, and by being open about their preferences. Shabana Azmi who kissed co-star Nandita Das in Fire, says, “That gay characters are being featured at all is a sign of progress, but it’s when you can laugh at someone without offending them that’s real maturity. We are still to reach that stage. But at least they’ve been spared malice in our films.”

‘Reel’y tough
Onir whose films like My Brother Nikhil and I Am put the focus on the issues faced by the LGBT community feels disillusioned by the industry when it comes finding the support to release such films, “Despite winning a National Award, I don’t think I will ever make a film like I Am again. My experiences of seeing it through till its release have left me disappointed. Selling the films to studios, finding exhibitors, distributors, channels have really left a bitter taste. TV channels are apprehensive in willing to buy the satellite rights of the film. And it is wrong of them to blame it on the audience or to claim that the controversial nature of the film will scare them away. The audience is ready for such films, the sellers in the market are not.”

We have regressed!
Onir believes that the film with a gay character as protagonist may not earn as much as a regular commercial one, but such films do have an audience and it’s unfair to not let these films reach the audience. He points out that Salaam Bombay which released more than two decades ago was given a U/A certificate even though it showed prostitution, while his film got an A certificate and that too after more than a dozen cuts, “only goes to show how regressive we have gotten as a society.”

Victimisation? & Casting ouch!
Onir however refuses to consider it victimisation. “Look at the way any minority is depicted in Bollywood, why only the LGBT community.”

“Be it women or people from a particular region, everyone is stereotyped here. Mainstream cinema mocks all kinds of minority. I wouldn’t say that the community is victimised, even though the insensitive depiction can be damaging,” added Onir. However, a recent incident that happened in Calcutta revealed that victimization in real life does takes place when fashion editor and gay activist Sourendra Kumar Das was subjected to violence and abuse in public by a miscreant named Sona Kundu. Onir’s film I AM portrayed similar roles, where the protagonist Rahul Bose too was subjected to abuse and humiliation too. Film critic and columnist Rajeev Masand points out that while character actors seem comfortable playing gay characters, most mainstream heroes are still not ready for it. “Image is a big deal here and nobody is willing to risk it. That’s why they may agree to play pretend-gays on screen, but none of them are willing to play real gay characters like say Tom Hanks or Antonio Banderas did in Philadelphia. Playing an out-and-out gay character is a risky proposition for them, as they feel that people may start associating their characters to their real selves.”

A quick nod to Irrfan Khan, Rahul Bose, Purab Kohli, Sanjay Suri, Harsh Chhaya and Sameer Soni who have essayed such characters. Rahul was in fact, one of the first ones to play a full-fledged gay character in the 1996 film Bomgay. There are several incidences, filmmakers can vouch for, when Bollywood stars on being approached for a gay role have blushed and turned visibly uncomfortable at the mention.

50 shades of gay!
According to a source, Mere Dad Ki Maruti actor Saqib Saleem will be playing gay in Karan Johar’s segment of BombayTalkies, as will Randeep Hooda. “It’s risky for a newbie, but the fact that he is willing to take it shows that things are not all that bleak in Bollywood,” says the source.

Purab, who had played a gay character in My Brother Nikhil, explains why playing such characters is not without risk. “Post the film, I got many roles on the same lines, so there is a fear of getting typecast. That my character was gay was incidental for me. The film was about relationships and emotions, so big deal if my partner was a man. Besides, Onir had a script that told a story, which is what attracts any actor. There was a respectability that came with the role. I didn’t have anyone mocking me or relating that to my real life at all.”

Changing times
Madhur Bhandarkar, whose films Page 3 and Fashion had broken away from the stereotypical images of gays, says that there’s a gradual change in the way such characters are being accepted in films. Citing examples of Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and Life in a Metro, he adds that there are filmmakers who tackle the topic realistically without sensationalising it or reducing characters to caricatures, even though they stick to mainstream commercial formats. Madhur says, “Today seeing such characters in our films doesn’t raise eyebrows. And even if the depiction is debatable at least the presence is felt. So I look at this as a positive sign. The change will not be overnight, but at least people are acknowledging it. So, I think it is a scenario changing for the better.”

Sony Music leverages iTunes in a unique way, for the first time in India releases a Tamil and Hindi sound track in the Made For iTunes version – the highest standards for music available on iTunes Store!

After a really long wait, Indian users can now buy music, movies and books from the iTunes stores in local currency and at friendly prices since its launch in December 2012. Global music giant, Sony Music, made available half a million songs, including Bollywood, International and Tamil Soundtracks to the iTunes store. Today, to enhance the musical experience, Sony Music for the first time in India will be releasing the MFIT (mastered for iTunes) versions, specially mastered for higher fidelity sound, for two big albums in Tamil and Hindi. Maryan Directed by ace director Bharat Bala starring the multi-talented Dhanush and the ravishing Parvathi Menon with music by multiple Grammy Award winner A R Rahman & the much awaited film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, with music composed by the musical trio Shankar – Ehsaan – Loy with Prasoon Joshi’s lyrics. Dev Joshi who is a popular child artist and now a role model for many believes in the importance of staying fit and dedicates a good amount of time to exercising. Deepshikha who plays Bhavander pari on the show was aware of his love for fitness workouts. However, with an erratic work schedule and school life to balance out, Dev Joshi doesn’t seem to find time to indulge in fitness workouts too much. But his love for good health doesn’t allow him to sit back. Adamant to integrate cycling with his daily workout regime, the child actor came up with a brilliant idea. Since, Dev Joshi stays fifteen minutes away from the set he decided that he would cycle to the sets every day with his mom following him in a rickshaw! That’s not it, he also utilizes the time on-set between scenes to ride his cycle.

Dev Joshi exclaimed, “I have always loved cycling! Cycling is a lot of fun and I go out with my friends regularly. I also travel to the sets everyday on my cycle because it is also a great form of exercise. It is a fun form of exercise and my legs don’t hurt much either.”

Paparatzy Productions’ ENEMMY to release on June 21

ENEMMY, Paparatzy Productions’ mega-entertainer is all set for a June 21 release. The film revolves around Eklavya Karmarkar aka Bhau (Suniel Shetty), Naeem Shaikh (Kay Kay Menon), Eric Collaco (Johnny Lever) and Madhav Sinha aka Maddy (Mahaakshay), four daredevil CID officers and a CBI officer Yugandhar Bishnoi (Mithun Chakraborty) who can be relied upon whenever the city faces problems from the underworld and a don responsible for mayhem — Mukhtar Memon (Zakir Hussain).

While Mithun da, Suniel Shetty, Kay Kay Menon and Zakir Hussain are past masters at such roles and Mahaakshay, is expected to perform some great action scenes, what is interesting is the choice of Johnny Lever as one of the officers. “Johnny Lever can be quite intense when he has to. It this is aspect of his that I’ve tried to explore,” Ashuu Trikha says. So one can expect more than one revelation from ENEMMY!

Eklavya Karmarkar (Bhau) {SunielShetty}, Naeem Shaikh {Kay Kay Menon}, Eric Collaco {Johnny Lever} and Madhav Sinha aka Maddy {Mahaakshay} were four daredevil CBI officers who could be relied upon whenever the city was facing critical problems from the underworld. The society at large in Mumbai were breathing heavy under the influence of the Underworld. This was one such time. There was a gang war that had broken in and the streets of the city were being washed in blood. The common man was caught in the crossfire. This, at a time when there were elections to be held at most part of the country, besides some key states like Maharashtra amongst some other states that had steady power reign of, a party that ruled in the centre as well!!!

A young dynamic leader, Ram Govardhan (RG) had taken the nation by storm. His debonair personality, youthful zest, dynamic approach and of course great looks had washed the eyes of the common man with love. The citizens of the country knew no better. He could do no wrong and his innocent face and eyes only helped this cause. He was leading his party’s campaign in Jharkhand too, where the elections were in full swing. He had known of the gang war in Mumbai, Maharashtra and was concerned. The whispers in Jharkhand had started gaining momentum saying that if the Party can’t handle their own home state, Maharashtra, then how the hell can they handle this one? This was bound to help the opposition more than anything. It had started casting aspersions over the election campaign and RG could not afford something like this. He needed the state. He had called the Maharashtra Chief Minister and told him in no uncertain words to get his house in order. The gang war had to stop. The common man had to feel safe!!

The case was passed on to the four officers of UNIT IX of the Crime Branch!!!

Preliminary investigations by Bhau and his team revealed that the war was waged by Mukhtar Memon {Zakir Hussain}, a dreaded gangster who in time had always managed to stay out of the hands of the law. But action needed to be taken and the Commissioner had ordered the arrest of Mukhtar Memon. Bhau did try to argue in vain that a simple arrest like this would make him walk in two hours, but the commissioner would hear nothing. He needed to show that the force was pro-active.

Bhau built a brilliant case against Mukhtar Memon based on extensive investigations that he had managed for the past four years. This ensured that Mukhtar Memon was not getting out soon or easy. He had managed to extract a lot of intimidating information about Mukhtar Memon. He made sure that the charges would stick.

Mukhtar Memon on the other hand was no ordinary criminal. He had contacts, money power, wherewithal and the blessings of some top politicians. This ensured his reign and control over the city. So, arresting him was no mean feat. But Bhau and his officers were no ordinary individuals. They went ahead with the arrest and managed to make the case stick. Unit IX had arrested Mukhtar Memon and put him behind bars!!!!

But putting a kingpin behind bars doesn’t necessarily mean that you have managed to garner control over him. As in this case it was bound to happen. There was a lull, but the storm soon gathered momentum and the gang war erupted again. This prompted RG to send a CBI officer from Delhi to get to the bottom of this and put a stop to this.

Prompt, honest, diligent, gutsy, intelligent and a firebrand, Yugandhar Bishnoi, the CBI officer moved swiftly on his new case to get to the bottom of the issue and sort this problem out for the benefit of the common man. In no time that he reached the city of Mumbai, he realized that the gang war was actually a façade. Mukhtar Memon was really annoyed on the fact that two truckloads of hard cash were stolen from him, right under his nose and he wanted it back. He needed to restore his reputation at the same time and he would stop at nothing till he achieved this.

Further investigations shocked the daylights out of him!!

This was no ordinary heist!!!!! The question was who had the guts to steal from Mukhtar Memon. Who was willing to put their life on the line to get hold of the entire cash!

Yugandhar Bishnoi was taken aback with what he had uncovered!!! This information was not one that had escaped the UNIT IX force too. They too had caught on!!!

A.R Rahman pays tribute to Ustad Bismillah Khan in Raanjhanaa

Using the “shenai” for which music maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan was renowned for , Oscar winner A.R Rahman pays homage to the Bharat Ratna awarded musician, through the songs of Raanjhanaa produced by Eros International and directed by Aanand L Rai.

Since the film starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor is based in the heartland of Benaras , the music composer looked no further that his inspiration- shenai player Ustad Bismillah Khan who hailed from Benaras .Rahman who has previously worked with Ustad Khan on a south film a few years ago ,will now make use of the shenai in all of the film’s songs, reminiscent of the maestro’s music.

Confirming the news says directed Aanand L Rai, “When Rahman sir heard the script intrinsic of Benaras flavour ,thoughts of Ustad Bismillah Khan immediately came to his mind and it was then that he suggested using elements of the “shenai” in all songs of Raanjhanaa in honor of the music maestro…the songs in the film are an unsaid tribute to Ustad Bismillah Khan and Beneras…Rahman sir holds Bismillah Khan in high regard and has even met his family since he has great respect for his music”.

Adds producer Krishika Lulla, ” There are several shenai elements in the songs of Raanjhanaa and they have come out beautifully…you can only expect the best from Rahman”.

Zombies were used in Indian cinema in very recent times. “It was due to globalization that zombies came to India” was the answer given by Kunal Khemu who is the part of the ZomCom film Go Goa Gone.

Zombies gave the Indian cinema a new genre for entertainment- ZomCom. In future too there will be movies which will have Zombies making us laugh! But the recent ZomCom flick is Goa Goa Gone which will give us an idea that in future too will the zombies be used to make us laugh.

Aditi Rao Hydari to plant a tree in memory of her pet

Aditi Rao Hydari recently visited the beautiful hills of Ranikhet to bury the ashes of her dog Frodo. The six-year old boxer recently died of a heart-attack leaving the actress heartbroken given that the pet was a huge part of her family.

Says Aditi Rao Hydari “I don’t know what to say… Frodo was the most adorable loving boxer with the cutest face. He was only six and very healthy. He died suddenly of a heart attack. I am heartbroken. Pets are like family. I have buried his ashes and will plant a tree for him. I know he will always be with me, and he knows that I will love him forever,” .
