India has the potential to produce world-class distance runners: Maria Mutola

“World champions arise from the most unlikely of place and there is no reason why India cannot produce one. The young athletes need to believe in themselves, but most importantly they need to go under the right coaching program. That is of vital importance,” said Maria Mutola, 2000 Olympics 800m gold medalist, three-time 800m World Champion and seven time 800m Indoor World Champion, while speaking to the media in the capacity of the international event ambassador for the TCS World 10 K Bangalore, to be run on Sunday, May 19.

Citing her own example, Maria said she started out as a swimmer but had to give it up as her parents could not afford to pay the coaching fees. She then began playing football, where she was noticed by a famous literary figure, who spoke to her about athletics and then sought permission from her father to begin her training.

“It was extremely difficult for me to train in Mozambique as there were no synthetic tracks, but the opportunity to travel to the Seoul Olympics was an eye opener. I realized I would have to work much harder if I hoped to make it to the top. It was after Seoul that I got a scholarship to the US, which changed my life,” said Maria.

“My years of hard work began paying off as I won the World Championships, yet the Olympic gold eluded me and it required a lot of mental strength and support for me to keep on working hard. The Olympic victory in 2000 was definitely the greatest moment of my life.”

Mutola has now taken up coaching and is currently coaching South African middle-distance runner Caster Semenya. Speaking about coaching she said, “It feels great to be a coach, while it is a bit easier than being on the track, the satisfaction derived from seeing your disciples getting better and faster is very fulfilling.”

Big names looking to lower course record of TCS World 10K

“There is a strong possibility of one of the course records being lowered on Sunday, May 19 at TCS World 10K Bangalore,” said Jurrie Van der Velden of Global Sports Communication (GSC) while introducing the first lot of elite athletes to the media at the Kanteerava Stadium on Thursday. Some of the athletes capable of achieving this feat were among the athletes at the meet & greet session.

Leading the women’s field and coming to Bangalore on the back of strong performances is Emily Chebet, the double and current World Cross Country champion, who last year ran the 4th fastest time of the year of 30.58 at the 2012 Tilburg Ladies 10K. Chebet is expected to make a strong attack on the course record of 31.58 that stands in the name of Yimer Wude.

“This is my first visit to India and I am still getting used to the weather, but since I specialize in the 10,000 metres event I am certain I will do well here. I have had a good year so far and the gold medal at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz in March this year has done my confidence a world of good and I hope to do well on Sunday,” said Emily.

The other front runner among the ladies field is defending champion Helah Kiprop, who hopes to become the first woman to have won the TCS World 10K title twice in a row. Helah has a personal best of 31.44 and is also coming here in good form, having won the 2013 Berlin Half Marathon.

“It feels great to be back in India again. I had a good run last year and I hope to better my time and win this year again. I have been coaching with my husband; his methods and techniques have improved my performance and provided a strong sense of motivation which will hold me in great stead through the season,” said Helah.

Among the men, Kenyan Daniel Salel is among the front runners, keen to make a mark on his comeback to India, his last visit fetching him a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. “It’s a very strong field, but I am prepared to run a fast race,” said Salel, not ruling out the possibility of a new course record.

Britisher Scott Overall, who has fifth place finish at the Berlin Marathon to his name, will be looking to make an impression among the African strong names and said, “This is my first run after the Berlin event. I am feeling fit and am looking forward to enjoying the 10K. Going by my current form I am hoping to get close to my personal best in the run on Sunday.”

Prithviraj underwent extensive workshops to prepare for his role as narrator in Aurangazeb.

Playing a cop comes easy to South superstar Prithviraj; however, the actor had quite a challenge at hand essaying his career’s 16th cop role ,for his upcoming film Aurangazeb under the Yash Raj banner since he plays a true-north Indian inspector ,for which the actor had to overcome the challenge of speaking in the local dialect.

Not only did he have to flawlessly deliver his dialogues while dubbing for the film but he also plays narrator in several parts of the film, for which the actor put in a lot of hardwork to polish his Hindi diction and unlearn most of what he knew –Says Prithviraj, “When Atul (director, Sabharwal) approached me, he’d told me that giving the voiceover would be a bigger challenge than playing a cop in the film because that’s a role I have played multiple times in my films down south. I accepted the challenge and hope I’ve lived up to his expectations.” Adding that , “Unlearning Hindi was tough. I knew how to read, write and speak the language, but my accent was different from a north Indian. So I underwent a fourmonth workshop to perfect my accent and prepare for my role as the narrator”.

Rahul Dravid – Captain, Rajasthan Royals

“I am shocked, disappointed, and distressed by the events that have resulted in the arrests last night and this morning. Rajasthan Royals is a special team, where we have always operated like a family – so this is particularly devastating. Spot fixing and corruption have hung over the game of cricket, and I know that the BCCI and RR take the same zero tolerance view of the situation. The RR owners and management have made their zero tolerance views clear on every possible occasion, and I am sure that they will support any action taken. For me, as a captain and leader, I have to focus on ensuring that the team fulfill their enormous potential and continue to play in the ‘Rajasthan Royals’ way. Our players are devastated that our performances may have been affected, as they have a desire to win that has been evident throughout the tournament. I hope that our fans get behind us even more, and that we become stronger as a unit – which often happens in times of adversity.”

Paddy Upton – Coach, Rajasthan Royals

‘As Rahul says, the Rajasthan Royals environment is a special one, where we focus on teamship, focus on the cricket, identify new players and promote young players to the front line. We challenge inexperience to compete with the most experienced – and that approach has risks. Today has seen an unfurling of events that have left us all shocked and disappointed, and we will support the franchise, the BCCI and the authorities in taking necessary actions to root out an evil that plagues our game. However, we will not let the team lose its focus on completing what has been a magnificent tournament. We cannot let ‘bad eggs’ ruin the game that we all love, affect the values that RR holds dear, and destroy an environment that we have worked hard to take to a new level.”

Team Management, Rajasthan Royals

“We fully support the statements issued by the BCCI President earlier this afternoon. We must all have zero-tolerance to match fixing and corruption. Should these allegations be proven, we will support the strongest of actions. We are supporting the BCCI and the authorities fully , and we will continue to do so.”

Global Advertisers forays into innerwear market

Mumbai: 16 May, 2013: The lingerie market in India is still in its infant stage until in recent times. Today, consumers have brand awareness and spend more on fashionable innerwear. There is also a clear rise in purchasing power and people are willing to buy more premium inner brands. Celebrity endorsements, joint ventures with foreign marquee names and reluctance among consumers to wear baniyans with holes have meant an intense buzz around undergarment makers. Even the rural consumers want branded innerwear because they are watching ads of Bollywood’s macho men: Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan and Shahrukh Khan.

With increasing competition in an innerwear segment, brands like Lux, Dollar, Rupa, Amul Macho, Jockey market their product heavily on out-of-home medium including television, print and other BTL activities.

Explaining on this, Sanjeev Gupta, Global Advertisers says “When it comes to fashion, there is no limit to quantity. Today a consumer buys one, tomorrow he may fancy four. Since this is not a very high-value item, demand is more resilient. Therefore, an innerwear brand doesn’t leave any stone unturned for the success of their product. We at Global understand their need and level of competition. An ooh campaign of innerwear brands comes out after in-depth market research with strategically positioned inventories at a reasonable operation cost, giving a brand best ROI. We taped this segment because the proportion of people who use branded innerwear is small so the long-term potential of the segment is very promising.”

For the record, Global has recently provided hoardings to outdoor campaigns of Lux Cozi, Macroman, Jockey, Lux ONN, Amul Macho, Dollar Bigboss, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi’s and Calvin Klein.

These players have engaged premium sites located at Marine Line, Marine Drive, Peddar Road, Andheri, Worli, Dadar, Santacruz, Sion and Thane. The size of hoardings varied from 40X40 to 20X20.
